Sanyo HDTV from...

There was a thread a while back about someone interesting in getting a good deal on a HDTV (I went back several pages to try and find it with no luck). A couple folks mentioned the Sanyo that Walmart was selling and it was such a good deal they may go for it. I was wondering if anyone did and how they feel about it now. I'm most interested in the Sanyo 32' for $679. (I'm in the midst of wheeling and dealing with someone to come up with a few pennies:>) Is it a good deal? Movies, XBX looks good?

Thanks!

If I were you, I'd wait until next winter to buy your HDTV. The prices are going to start to drop on the better models and Xbox 2 games will still look good on the TV you have now.

I believe Dell is going to be releasing a 42' HDTV that is under 1k...I read that on another forum.

Indeed. Give it a year, you'll be able to get stuff for quite a bit cheaper.

Besides, it seems to me that the only HD resolution supported by that specific TV is 1080i (if I read that right,) meaning that a lot of HD games still wouldn't be playable on that television.

Well to be fair if you wait it'll always be cheaper.

You should be careful and find a model that can upscale all lower resolutions to 1080i instead. I am currently looking (waiting for it to appear in a local retailer) at Toshiba 34HF85. It will be sold for $1099, 34 inch 16:9, upconverts lower quality signals.
No 1080p support but I dont see that as vital. Hardly any HDTV at buyable price supports it, and if they do, they usually downscale it.

My understanding is that the Sanyo upconverts 480p and 780p both to 1080i. I believe I read that in a thread on the AVS forums in a post from one guy that had actually purchased the TV and tested it.

Thanks folks for your input. I can cut a 'deal' right now, may not be able to in the future. But waiting seem's like it might be a good thing. As usual, one can never be sure what to do:>)

I just have this sneaking suspicion that Samsung HDTVs will be the first to drop in price. Their partnership with MS for the 'HD Revolution' has got to be brewing something big...

There are Samsung 32" HDTVs for roughly $600... 4:3 aspect ratio screen.

I used to have some serious interest in the Samsung HD sets. Then I talked to some people on a bunch of home theater forums.

The samsungs have some serious issues. Their picture is awesome, but only if you stand on your head while juggling four chainsaws and pray to the TV gods that you bought the right model number. Or at least that's the general impression I got from people who bought them

I can confirm that the Sanyo upconverts to 1080i, Xbox games look awesome.

However, if you use your x-box for movies there is a good chance that you will see green vertical lines in the background, due to the lack of progressive playback for movies on the x-box. If you have a seperate progressive scan DVD then you will be fine.
