Gotham City Impostors

I think this looks ridiculously cool. I saw this over at nohighscores.com.

I have no idea what I just watched.

I know, right?

I definitely like the concept.

Monolith wants their own TF2. It looks fun and stupid, and with batman's ip attached they have half the battle already won.

The idea is: "Hey, PvP Gotham would be cool, but... uh... wouldn't everybody want to be Batman or the Joker?" Which leads to "Dude, of course everybody wants to be Batman or the Joker! So then, what if everybody played as Batman and Joker *wannabes*!"

It looks pretty hilariously awesome.

I was just thinking it looks like TF2 crossed with Batman. Looks like fun.

I'm imagining an entire team of people yelling "I'm Batman!" at each other and doing terrible Christian Bale impressions.

I don't see the problem

Keaton-ites will feel discriminated. Now try to imagine how bad it'll be for Kilmer-ites, Cloonies and AdamWest-ies.

More like the "wannabes" from "The Dark Knight" movie, seems to me.

Yup, as the Sons of the Batman were at first punks or "Mutants"

Neither do I. Hell, I'm looking forward to it.

And the answer is:

If the plot sounds familiar to you, you may have already read Detective Comics 867 through 870. The four-issue story Batman: Impostors features a plot inspired by an early concept for the upcoming game.

DAY ONE PERCH

Just got into it myself. Looking forward to it, looks like some quirky fun.

Ghost Recon Online beta is supposedly opening up next week too.

This just jumped onto my radar from out of nowhere. It doesn't hurt that it's a Monolith production.

So...

I barely remember signing up for it, but somehow I got accepted in the beta. It begins on October 5th. I have no idea what to expect. Probably a good thing.

Anyone else?

Funny stuff. My first reaction was to wonder if this was a TF2 mod of some sort.

Wow, so apparently this is out now. That snuck up on me! Anyone got this yet? Thoughts?

No interest at all eh? That's surprising!

I've played a bit so far. Unfortunately it suffers from the same problem that Spacemarine did, matchmaking in a game without the population to support it, so I'm sitting on bad ping pretty much constantly. It's also running a bit chuggy but I don't know if that's the ping or the game itself.

Seems like a standard contemporary shooter other than that, unlocks, custom load-outs, "Calling cards" that are shown to people you kill. You can tell the interface was made with a console in mind (PC here), and unfortunately it's tied into Games for Windows Live system as well, boo....

The concept and aesthetic is really cool though, and the gadgets look like they could be fun. I'll probably give it another go over the weekend and hope for some more players that give me better ping. I think games like this REALLY need dedicated servers though, so it's a shame that isn't an option.

I just saw this too, came here first to gauge interest. No use playing a game that has no players.
It looks great from the videos but without the player base it will go the way of Transformers. (which was a great multi-player game by the way!)
I'll wait and see. The price is right though.

When I looked at it on XBLA yesterday, it did not have a buy option yet. MS seems to have started putting up placeholders before a game goes live recently.

I'll see if the trial version us up today. I suspect it is not going to have enough players to thrive as an online only game.

I got into the beta last week (I think I applied for it with some Arkham City code that came with my purchase), and this pretty much sums up my feelings about it. The concept and aesthetic are definitely fun and interesting (the Initiation/tutorial mission is pretty funny) but ultimately it was underwhelming. Loooong wait for a match (granted it was during the beta period), consistent frame rate drops and standard fare game modes made for a 'if-it-feels-like-TF2-then-why-don't-I-just-play-TF2' response.

I did like some of the locomotion mechanics with ramps, trampolines, ziplines and rollerskates.

An official post on the game's forum, says that the first batch of DLC will be free. That's cool. Not so cool, is that they list matchmaking fixes, join-in-progress and some kind of mute fuction as part of the DLC.

EDIT:

Oh, you can also buy XP boosts on the PC version. See the bit in I put bold? Whenever you sell something that affects gameplay, you no longer care about fun and balance.

XP Boosts:
Keeping Gotham City Impostors fun and balanced is our #1 objective, so when we designed XP consumables in the game we were very careful to ensure that they gave people cool options while not adversely affecting the game balance. The way our XP Boosts work is that they give an XP multiplier to a team or individual for a finite amount of time, so they will earn experience a bit faster than normal.

You may be thinking, “but won’t leveling up faster create imbalance?” Well, no. Gotham City Impostors is all about letting you play the game the way that you want to play it. As people level up, they earn custom slots and keys to unlock items (weapons, gadets, support items, etc) in which to fill their custom slots. The items in the game are not linked to levels, so, for example, you can use the first weapon unlock that you earn to unlock ANY weapon in the game. We’ve also taken great pains to ensure that the game is balanced so that a person using the pre-made loadouts will not be at a disadvantage against someone with everything unlocked. Leveling up won’t make you more powerful, it will just give you a lot more options and cool ways to approach combat. To ensure that the game stays fun, the team will also be aggressively monitoring the game by pulling data from servers and fighting alongside you in the live game so that we can make running balance adjustments.

That's too bad. I really liked how this looked, but a small community + real money transactions = greatly decreased interest from me.

Tribes: Ascend does the same thing. It's just unlocking extra options for people who want to invest more in the game. There are plenty of default load-outs which seem competitive. There are many reasons to not like the game, I don't think that's a fair one.

... like all this stuff! Forgot about the lack of mute function... it's the exact same mistake that Spacemarine made. How do developers think they can get away with making the same mistakes over and over again?

Redwing,

The reason they think they can list patches as DLC is because consumers are OK with them selling things like XP boost packs.

I had this conversation in the... I think it was the Super Street Fighter IV thread. Go and have a look for a back and forth between me and ahrezmehndi.

As long as you can spend time and get the same things that unlock earlier in a game if you spend money, I don't think it breaks the game. Tribes is a good example, but probably the biggest one is League of Legends. I don't think either of those games are unbalanced or lack fun.

The difference here is this isn't a F2P game, it's a paid game. But I suspect it went paid only because the consoles don't have models for F2P yet.
