ESPN Baseball - Junk pitches and Irish Catholic Guilt

Am I the only guy who feels bad throwing trash to a batter?

Sometimes when I throw real crap and get a batter to wiff, I feel a little dirty. I usually discuss it with my opponent to get his take, and if he agrees with my feelings that "If I swing at crap, I deserve to strike out", I keep it up, but if he seems to be getting bent, I throw more in the strike zone.

I'm just wondering.

80% of the time I miss the strike zone it isn't on purpose. I agree with sentiment that "If I swing at crap, I deserve to strike out". If they were all in the zone that would take away from the defensive side of the game considerably.

Yeah, I'm exactly the same way, and have pretty much the same attitude. One thing I'd change about the game is that most of the time I feel like I have a bit too much control over the pitch. Seems like in real life, the pitches are more variable.

The only thing that strikes me as cheesy in the game is how you can throw a batter out from right field. I don't think I've ever seen that in the majors, but I've seen it a least twice in this game.

I have seen batters thrown out from right field in the majors. It does happen. not with the frequency of this game, but you get a slow runner and a hard hit single to a RF who's playign a bit shallow and he gets credit for the kill (which is what they should call it instead of pansy sounding 'assist.')

I try to vary my pitches and play the corners, as most in the majors do. A pitcher can't live on the fat part of the plate or he won't be in the game very long. If I swing at a pitch out of the zone, I deserve the strike. That's what pitching is, deception. A slider looks like a fast ball as it starts and you begin your swing, then it tails away and you hit a measly grounder or foul it off or K. That's baseball, baby.

Although it's fun to shock folks who are looking for a junk pitch and you put it right down the center of the plate and all they do is stare at it as it goes by. DECEPTION.
