XBox Live Gamertags and Matchfinder

Not to argue with you Pyro, but I find it very useful since you can look at a game and see everyone who plays it instead of having to search profiles individually.

If the thread continues, please add: Unreal Championship 2 and Forza Motorsport

You don't have to search profiles individually, you click on any Xbox Live Gamertag in a profile and it will list everybody's Xbox Live Gamertag on the site. I may add a place to put what games you're currently playing in your profile, but we really don't need to be keeping this in the forums anymore as the profiles can handle all of this.

Pyro, I hear what your saying... but the beauty of the thread (or the original post, anyway) is that, when it comes to listing the games, the "group by" is by title. I grant you that if people updated their profiles, we wouldn't need the top half of it but I assume that there are some who use the second half to find potential playing partners.

For a programmer's perspective, it is possible (though I don't know how feasible) to implement a many-to-many relationship in the DB that would allow users to not only maintain their gamertag but also a list of what games they are actively playing... but you probably already know this. The challenge would be creating a management interface that was easy enough to use so that members would actually keep their list up-to-date. Of course, getting people to actually manage their list it is a completely different matter.

Either way, props to ChrisG for his efforts thus far and to you for the 2.0 goodness.

It's already there, you just type in the games one per line. I can add it to the big list of Gamertags. And really, how many people do you think are still playing the games listed here? I can tell you from the last time I played Halo 2, this list isn't accurate. It's hard to update and therefore it's out of date. If everybody just puts a list of games they're playing in their profile, it'll be easy to figure out who's playing what.

I'll try to think of some way to encourage people to update their profile with what games they're playing, but it's a much better way of doing it than this list. For all the good this list is doing, you can just write down some random forum usernames on a piece of paper and pretend it's a list of people playing whatever game you want The problem with this list is the exact reason we have the profile stuff, because nobody but chrisg can update it, and nobody has any reason to remove games they're no longer playing. With the profile stuff you can update your own info, and if you constantly have your list of games next to your username you'll want to keep the list as short as possible.

Found it. Good stuff... though that still doesn't do the group by game title that I spoke of. For example, if you could click on of the listed games and see everyone that has that title in their profile. Of course, unless the data is properly normalized - which would necessitate a select list and not free text data entry - there's no way the functionality would actually work. As I'm sure you know (and so this is for those who might not), "MC3" is not the same as "Midnight Club 3" is not the same as "Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition".

And really, how many people do you think are still playing the games listed here?

I completely agree in that regard... and couldn't tell you how to make sure that everyone keeps their data up-to-date... but I'd say that those who took the effort to regularly update this thread would also be the ones to update their profiles, so at least you would net out on that count.

I completely agree. I think the biggest value of this thread is the gamertags section and people should maintain their own profile. I guess the reason I stuck my head in here was to simply say/imply that a list grouped by game would be a really cool feature to have... whether people kept it updated or not would matter no more or less than it does here.

Thanks again for your efforts and keep up the good work.

I agree but I just don't think it's feasable for mainly the reason you suggest, that you either give people a discrete select list where you can sort or you can let them put in whatever and you can't sort.

Even one better, because in this thread chrisg has to come in and compile everything you post and update the first post, which can have a delay of months really.

I think the listing that has everybody's Gamertag and then the games they play listed would be way more useful than this list, simply because people are much more likely to keep the games list updated. It's much less data to sort through than this list, and you can always load up the page and do the good ol "Ctrl+F" for "Midnight Club".

So why is a descrete select list not feasible? Especially if you have a multi-select capable option available, it might not be so bad. I think I have the JavaScript code lying around somewhere if you're interested. We could just make Edwin the keeper of the master game list since he seems to be into that sort of thing.

...which would skip right over those who entered "MC3" or even typoed it and ended up with something like "Midnight Cub 3" or what have you. If a normalized list isn't feasible in this framework, so be it, but if it is, I'd be happy to help however I could if necessary.

It is but I'd prefer people entering their own games. Really, a mutliple select list is too bulky and confusing for people, having to Ctrl+click and all that. A list where you type in your games seperated by a comma or one on each line is so much easier to maintain, it's a feature not a bug

Drupal originally listed the members of your list and let you click on one, giving you a page of users who entered similar items into their list, so clicking "Midnight Club 3" would give you a list of people with that in their games list. I'll just try to reenable that for the games list, and keep the current profile pages for the other entries.

hey fuzzyb,

this thread is no longer updated as Pyro added some really great stuff to the site. Basically you enter your games into your profile under the category "Games currently playing" as you do with your gamertag. You can then see who is playing your games as well, by clicking on their names. Also if you click on your gamertag, you can see all other people who have a gamertag on XBox live. Very nifty features and a big hats off to Pyro for implementing them!

Hey Chrisg, if you'll stick that in the first post, I'll lock the thread. That way people will know what to do now.

what can I say perhaps a final done. Cheers Pyro!
