Constantine

Only 56% So Far From RT

But IGN Loves It So

Anyone going to see this this weekend?

If anyone other than Keanu was the lead, I''d probably be seeing it Saturday night. As it stands, it sounds like a rental unless I hear otherwise.

This has the potential to be Van Helsing minus the awfulness that was Van Helsing. Still don''t know what Ebert was smoking when he gave that piece of crap 3 stars. And he gave ""Hitch"", an excellent film, 2.5 stars. Someone please beat some sense into that man.

""When battling demons, you need a big gold gun""

Ehhhh. John Constantine gets by on wits, arrogance and dumb luck. The only time he used a gun in the entire Delano run, and the Ennis/Ellis issues I''ve read is when dealing with a very nasty human. Of course, that''s part of Hellblazer''s british charm that apparently didn''t go over well with marketing. And what''s this rubbish about his innate ability to ''see'' demons? Pah. Not that it wasn''t painfully obvious that they were going to rape the property before, but still. That''s utterly rubbish.

It looks like it''s a good thing I haven''t read the comic book.

That said, maybe a matinee if I''m bored.

I''d still like to see it, if only because I tend to like the epic angel/demon stuff, and because Rachel Weisz is HOT.

That said, it''ll definitely be a matinee, if anything.

I''m definately going to see it,the first release of the year I actually want to see. Keanuu Reeves being in it has no effect on me whatsoever. This is the kind of movie I think fits him very well and I think he will be good.

I so agree with Sanjuro. Keanu is absolutely the wrong choice for this role.

I disagree. Granted, I know comparatively little about John Constantine.

But, based on what I do know, from the Books of Magick: Life in Wartime series I''ve been reading, Keanu basically seems like a dark-haired, American Constantine. I think he''ll do a fine job.

I know nothing about the comic, so I am blissfully ignorant of all the Hollywood mangling of the source material. I think it looks like fun.

I''d like to keep it that way until I at least see the movie. I''ve had Starship Troopers the movie ruined by reading the source material and watching the TV show, then realizing how completely {ableist slur} the movie was as a result. I couldn''t even watch I, Robot because of the same effect. I''ll just try to watch the movie before I read any of the comics to at least get a couple of hours of enjoyment out of it.

Ed Norton, I think would have been a much better Contatine. And what''s with this crap of him being from California? He is from the UK. This would have much so much more a better movie if Hollywood hadn''t tried to change everything .... and I haven''t seen it yet.

um... Starship Troopers was {ableist slur} to begin with.

I might go see it if my schedule permits, but I doubt it.

Starship Troopers by Heinlein is an awesome read. The movie completely fu!ked up what is perhaps one of the greatest science fiction stories ever written.

That being said, while I''m a huge graphic novel fan, I''ve never read Hellblazer. The whole ""I''m Keanu Reeves and will save the planet for you"" bit is wearing extremely thin. Is this all he''s going to do, now?

Is this all he''s going to do, now?

Has he ever done anything else?

Okay, Devil''s Advocate. But otherwise?

Sweet November.

And now I need to go lobotomize myself so I can forget I ever saw that movie.

To hell with the source material. I need some loud explosions so people around me don''t hear me munching my popcorn. Big, loud explosions.

Hollywood doesn''t like Brits in leading roles.

Yikes, please don''t bring up the whole U-571 fiasco... I still get headaches from remembering some of the people in my history classes screaming about hollywood... Who is surprised anymore when Hollywood takes something people love or found meaningful and ruin it?

I think Schindler''s List was the last good, historical film to come out of our Hollywood. and that was ''93.

What about SPR?

Only, if you see the movie, it will likely spoil or otherwise ruin the source material. Would you not prefer that the source material ruin the movie, rather than vice versa? Or do you not care about the source material in this case?

The Brute Squad is on its way to your place now. Just thought I''d give you a little head start.

The ST movie didn''t spoil the book for me, because as soon as I started reading the book I realized it was on an entirely different plane and the similarity was in name alone.

Plus, I probably won''t read this source material unless I can find it lying around somewhere. I''d imagine as forgettable as this movie sounds I won''t remember a thing

First: I''ll probably check out constantine in the theater at some point, though I don''t know when. It''s my kind of cheesy stuff blows up and bad guys die kind of movie. Yeah, it''s got Keanu in it, which is a fairly big negative, but not all his movies are terrible.

Now onto the other topic.
Starship Troopers the movie is enjoyable, but only if you ignore the fact that it is in any way related to Heinlen''s book.

I own, have read multiple times, and love the book.

I also really enjoy the movie. For me, the movie is one of those ones where it''s so bad that it''s great and my friends and I laugh our way through the entire thing. We cheer when girls remove their garments. We laugh hysterically when Micheal Ironside delivers the ""It sucked his brains out"" line, because it''s delivered perfectly. And yes, we laugh at almost every line uttered from the mouth of Casper Van Dien because he has absolutely no acting ability. Imagine how great it would be to have Mystery Science Theater 3000 back and for them to do this movie. Now imagine doing that yourself everytime you watch it with a group of your best friends.

You just have to go into the movie with the right frame of mind/sense of humor. If you can''t do that, well then I feel sorry for you

I actually watched Starship Troopers before I read the book and I was extremely upset that Dina Meyer''s boobs wasn''t in the book. So in my opinion, the book is scifi trash at its worst and I''ll take oogling boobies and killing giant bugs over an political socialoical discussion.

Ok, I''m kidding! Anyone believing those comments should be burned at the stake.. Starship Troopers was one of the most important scifi novels ever written. Heinlein was a genius and its a shame Hollywood turned one of his masterpieces into a James Cameron rip-off.

As far as Constantine is concerned... well, its a renter. I''ve been burned too many times by Blade, The Crow and End of Days at the theater to buy into another leather coat wearing hero with a grudge saving the world from damnation.

Me too. There''s an excellent example of the movie kicking ass and the source material being crap. Okay, we get it, someone killed your girlfriend, go kill some bad guys, dammit!

Ditto that. But I worked at a video store, so I have an ingrained ability to compartmentalize movies that are nominally related to books.
ST the movie is a fun sci-fi romp. Totally non-human aliens, cool SFX, and a role that seems like it was written specifically for Ironside.
ST the book is all of that and more.

It''s like the LotR movies. There''s so much left out. There''s even stuff left out that I felt was extremely important and simply couldn''t be left out and keep the story intact. That doesn''t mean I can''t just turn that part of my brain off and enjoy the flicks.

Man I loved Starship Troopers when it came out, its almost like a scifi/nazi satire in some ways. Sure the acting might be cheesy but it has lots of action, lots of gore, Michael Ironside, good space scenes and hot chicks (or at least I thought so at the time). But everyone I know and everyone who talks about it hate it with a passion. I''ve never read the book so I have nothing to compare it with but liked the movie alot.

Another great child hood memory brutally broken on the rocks of Hollywood stupidity... I''ll see it at a matinée and leave the angry me at home tied up in the closet.

So many comments, so little time...

Parenthood. His finest moment. (Except for possibly Bill and Ted.)

That quote fits just about every Hollywood ''adaptation''. Although The Princess Bride and Shawshank Redemption were remarkable as much for the purity of their adaptations as for the quality of the movies.

I''m right there with you. I really liked Blade, too, though for different reasons.

(emphasis added) You consider Michael Ironside a plus? He''s always struck me as a cut-rate Jack Nicholson.
