Wow: We finally broke down...

Ok... for those of you who haven't found out yet, Edwin and myself finally broke down and each bought a copy of WoW at my store.
Now, I'm still relatively new to the MMO scene (although I played City of Heroes for a while) and I'm new to the Warcraft scene (started off playing Age of Empires so I never was a big Warcraft person), and I'm waiting for my new credit/debit card to arrive, and until then I cant start playing. I did play for about a day or two during beta but all I did was run around and kill a couple of animals, and I didn't have much time for anything else.

Anyway, I'm asking you guys for general information in regards to what you think someone with my limited knowledge of MMOs and Warcraft should start off with and where the GWJ guild is located and any other such information you think I should know about before I begin.

The Roll Call thread is the where most characters and servers are listed.

As for getting started.. look for people with yellow ! over the heads and go from there.

As toungue-in-cheek as that sounded, it''s actually good advice. Keep your pop-up tips on, at least for the first 6 or 7 levels, and you should be pretty good to go. The game is remarkably easy to pick up, and the first chunk of levels is impressive, when you finish them. You''ll realize that you''ve been pretty firmly on rails, but you won''t notice it until later, and you certainly won''t care.

In terms of classes or characters, go with what looks interesting. Again, Blizzard has done a great job in making it difficult to really hurt yourself, so take something that sounds interesting. (If it ain''t, you can always reroll. :))

Join Blackhand (the server), and hop into the GWJ chat channel to get someone to give you a guild invite when you get that far. It''s all pretty easy from there on out.

Enjoy, and make sure you tell your social life that it''s ok to be put aside for a while.

Great, more noobs choking our server....

Welcome aboard.

Actually, that''s one of the greatest things about this game, you don''t need to know anything. It just kinda sucks you in and leads you along in a learn as you play adventure. I knew nothing about MMORPG""s and now....well.....I know somthing. The depth is simply stunning.

The other big ""MUST DO"" is to take advantage of the knowledge and generosity if the GWJ Guild. It''s a fantastic advantage!

as per the GWJ chat channel mentioned

just hit enter, a box should appear with a cursor. Type
join /gwj
and hit enter again. You''ll now be in the GWJ chat channel. Pay attention to what number it gets assigned to (4 I think if you haven''t left any of the default channels) and then hit enter and type:
/# can I get a guild invite please?
(where #= the channel number GWJ got assigned to) and if someone is on that can add people to the guild you should get asked who you are on the boards and a swift ''welcome''.
From there on out you''ll probalby use the /g (guild) chat more than the /gwj chat.

I''m installing the game now... Anybody ever used the 10 day guest pass that is included in box? I''d like to know because right now I don''t have a credit/debit card as stated in previous post but that should be arriving before my 10 day pass is finished if used. Also if anyone has used it, do i get to keep my character once the 10 days are up and I use the actual key for my account?

I carried my main over from my 10 day pass over to a regular account just fine, no problem at all.

careful with that ten day pass as it is meant for a friend to use. From what I understand the serial that comes with the game is for actual copy you bought. The ten day pass is for someone else who will have to buy a seperate version of the game to continue using that character if they wish. I really don''t know if they would allow you to input the serial no. you already used to install the game on your system as the no. you would need to input in order to continue the character created on your guest pass.

The 10 day pass will still ask you for credit card info ''to ease the process'' once you get the full game from what my brother told me.

Basically the 10 day pass creates the account the same way a normal account is created except after 10 days you have to put in a serial from the full game to keep playing.

I''ll make a virtual credit card from Amex for $10 then just create a new account with my regular credit card.

The problem I anticipate for my brother who is in the middle of my ten-day free pass is that, upon expiration, he will be unable to locate a retail box to continue playing his characters. Blizzard runs the risk of losing potential customers if they cannot immediately become paying members with their existing characters at the end of the trial period.

I''ll see if my local store still has any. Check the thread WoW: CD Monitoring for more info.

Well, I got a call from my store yesterday saying they had the time cards so I passed by and picked one up. Finished all the updates last night and played for less than 10 or 15 minutes until the RoN game started last night.
