WoW Launch Disaster

I was surprised that the launch of WOW did not seem to have any noticable effect (from my perspective) on EQ2 population.
That was a big surprise to me - then again people might be holding off getting the game (like me)

I didn''t think they would because WoW fans aren''t just going to buy EQ2 to play for a month in most cases.

Nor I. I really wish that I liked WoW better as my system is fairly low end, and I have to run EQ2 at the lower settings. For me it came down to feel, and I think most MMOers will be similar, choosing the feel of one or the other. Where WoW will draw big crowds is from the first timers, and I hope for Blizzard''s and the genre''s sake they improve upon launch quickly( I am sure the will), so that the newbies don''t get discouraged.

Played for a long time today, granted this is during daytime hours, but was pretty smooth all day, a couple of spots of minor lag for a few seconds, but no big deal. Pretty good second day, let''s see what tonight brings!

Disaster? Nope. I''ve played all day today with no problems, except those frikkin Venture Co. jerks.

Folks, I''m estatic that your play sessions are going so well. I can assure you that at least a large minority of the population aren''t having similar luck at any time of the day and we''re bitterly jealous. Possibly deranged and jealous.

Anyway, I can''t play the game in a stretch longer than 30m, when I can get on at all. Maybe disaster isn''t the right word, but I''m hard pressed to think of a better one.

I got on one of the new servers just to see and there were maybe 12-15 folks in the newbie area. I leveled to seven in less than an hour without a hint of lag. So I''m sure it''s just that I made a poor decision when I took Blizzard''s advice as to the server I should choose, I just can''t help but think that''s not exactly my fault. Nor is the company''s solution really a solution: ""Create a new character on a different, less populated server.""

Well for the last hour or so the servers has been down on east and central. Joy!

Blizzard needs to start releasing some numbers. The fact that they havent leads me to think its possible they arent overwhelmingly fantastic. I really would be able to swallow the problems better if I knew that there are even 400,000 people trying to play. If its closer to 3/4 of a million, let us know. I know a lot of people would be eased a bit if this were the case.

I doubt they''re done counting.

Hmm... Sounds like time to create an alt to my alt... in a different region. At least then I''d get my fix (assuming I was at home and not at work, of course).

They just posted that they are restarted ALL realms in North America. So hopefully everything will be back up in the next 10-15 minutes. Oh ya.. and all our characters will be naked at the character selection screen for the next few days.. lol... I guess part of the problem with retrieving our character lists has something to do with displaying our current equipment so they''re stripping us down.

Sexy...

Go here to really experience WoW

Wow.. at first I was extremely jealous of all of you who have the TIME to play... now I feel better na na na

Of course I''m sure very few of you will be GWJ tomorrow like myself ... come on January 1st!!!!!!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving all!

I think the reason alot of ''angst'' has been recorded is that alot of people thought *just* because it was Blizzard the launch was going to be oh so smooth, and it wasn''t.

Do any of the other technical people here shudder whenever you think about what the poor Blizzard programmers are going through right now? It sounds like they''ve tried to fix this loot/lag thing over, and over, and over again, and it STILL isn''t working right. Probably working 20 hours a day with higher-ups barking orders at them constantly. I''ve been in simlar shoes before, and it sucks big time.

Based on my personal experience, I bet the devs and admins predicted this would happen but management said whatever they wanted to do to prevent it would be too expensive. And now they''re frantically spending the money to put infrastructure in place that the devs and ops people asked for 2 years ago.

WoW is running flawlessly without a single hiccup after that downtime. I have hope for Blizzard to turn this around...

I had bad timing tonight. Attempted to get into Blackhand but there was a long waiting line in the queue so I hopped over to Shadowsong where I created my original character. I wasn''t in-game more than 5 minutes before a message when up that they were bringing the server down for maintenance. Checked Blackhand one more time only to find an even longer wait time.

So much for that. I''ll try again tomorrow when I''m not tired and cranky.

Yesterday all was fine for myself. 2-3pm PST today it was generally ok on Hyjal but with the occasionally long loot-lags. Then they announced a reset - the message was ""all west and central servers taken down for emergency maintenance ETA 1 hour"". When the servers came back up loot-lag was even worse until I was unceremoneously dropped back to the character selection screen trying to resurrect (lag kills, don''t ya know). I gave up until now but it seems the servers have been down since 8:30pm and an ETA of two hours.

I''m surprised. I figured Blizzard were intentionally beating up their servers when this loot-lag stuff happened during the beta stress test. But taking down the servers twice in one day, and for so long... they''re beginning to shake my confidence.

That all said, never seen a que yet. =)

Lets hope they get this stuff smoothed out by the weekend.

Someone mentioned wanting numbers?

With the release of World of Warcraft in North America, Australia, and New Zealand yesterday, we have already seen an incredible level of demand for the game. We launched with 41 servers in the U.S. yesterday, and we are bringing up an additional 34 servers today to accommodate the influx of players. Over 200,000 accounts were created in just a single day!

I moved over an played on Llane for the entire evening. Time for sleep. If you come over to Llane, I recreated my characters there...

Are you permanently moving?

I got up at 4:45 am and played my Tauren warrior for about 3 hours flawlessly (I went to bed at 8p last night after being totally unable to connect while trying off and on for about 2 hours). If there are guilds running on both sides, my Alliance character is Jadawin (Human Paladin) and my Horde character is Beefheart (Tauren Warrior)- invites would be appreciated.

It''s tired and cliched to call these games ""Crack"", but it''s so true. When you want your fix, you get so pissed waiting and trying to get in, and then when you''re in and it''s working smoothly, it''s like nothing else matters. Pretty scary...

It''s much better this morning... I was still experiencing some loot lag, but 15s vs. 5m is more than acceptable. There''s a weird bug with some flowers that locks you up so you can''t loot anything else, but there''s a chance that''s related to Cosmos, which I started using this morning (great stuff, btw... CTMod has a few features I like better, but overall Cosmos gets the nod).

So yeah, WoW seems to be working just in time for all my free time this week to be done... and I''m ok with that

Honestly glad that you''re getting the chance for some fairly reliable time to have fun in the game. Me, I''m pretty much shot until a week from now, and that''s even if I''m lucky enough for the phone company to not screw up moving my service to the new place (I run DSL). So, no fix for me! I''m working the next three days anyway, so it''s probably better knowing I couldn''t play even if I wasn''t working.

Wow they added a lot of western servers. Two pages worth now.

Last night, I decided to try out one of the Pacific servers listed in a thread as already having had maintenance. I still had some loot lag, but noticed an odd thing...
Quest loot didn''t lag.
Regular loot did.

So, if you''re questing, you could ignore everything but quest loot and be slightly better off. Of course, Cenarius(Pacific) was less laggy than other servers anyway and the Tauren newbie area was fairly unpopulated.

Yeah, looks like they are going crazy with the pacific servers, I guess for the Australian/NZ crowd, but whenever I check many are listed as ""low"" on there, even during peak other-side-of-the-world hours, while the EST are mostly high.

Jumped on last night (Blackhand) after the servers finally returned (after 10CST sometime) and played till 2 am, with no problems at all.

Going by this press release it looks like over 200,000 signups with 100,000 concurrent users on day 1. They had 41 servers at launch, so that''s about 2,440 players per server concurrently assuming it''s spread evenly.

With them adding 34 more I think that should take care of server populations, now just to work on the loot backend!

I''m don''t know about this loot thing, if it lag spike I can''t fight, loot or anything but when it''s normal (all of last night was 100% fine when the server came up) I have no loot lag at all. Seems to be all or nothing for me.
