WoW Launch Disaster

Pages

1st off let me say im sure some of you are playing smoothly and if so good for you. So here goes my experiences so far today.

Started playing on a low pop server early in the morning just picked one randomly because i didn't know which server my friends would be on yet. Anyway went smoothly leveled to 11 then found out my friends were on Stormrage. Tried to login and i waited over 30min in the que only to be reset so i logged for a while in frustration. Came back on a bit later waited in que for over 40 min and finally got in to find the newbie areas to be just insane. Not that i didn't expect them to be overcrowded but it took me a good 4 hours just to get out of the newbie area at Northshire Abbey which normally took me an hour or less.

Not to mention the loot lag. So i finally get out of noob area only to find Goldshire to be even worse. I attempted the quests around goldshire but after spending over 2 hours at lev 5 just trying to do one quest i said you know what this isn't worth it and logged. I tried to go back onto the low pop server i had tried earlier only to be met with que position 385 est wait 86 min. So i logged off and now i'm posting here.

Anyone with any common sense knew the flood Blizzard was gonna get hit with on launch day. Look at the frenzy over CB keys, ST Keys, even mass frenzy over any OB information. What did blizz do to prepare for this? Well apparently not much. There responses on the boards are nothing but cut and paste. The fact is i believe that blizzard is not willing to pay out the bandwith or there is a serious issue with the server architecture that thier servers just cannot handle the amount of people in them. There solution and apparently for a few weeks even according to their posts is the que.

I find the Que to be a slap in the face to any paying customer and i just can't believe they would use it in retail. I have spent the last 10 hours or so in utter frustration because of blizzard's incompetence to learn the lesson taught by every other mmorpg launch disaster (of which there has been many). The fact remains is that Blizzard was not ready for this launch and even a cursory glance at the boards proves how many frustrated paying customers there are out there right now. I'm disgusted and i say f*ck this and i'm going to bed.

Just another sign from the divine (or infernal depending on your tastes. I favor whomever favors the short blade) that you should have really just bought Escalation instead.

I''m number 381 in my queue right now, I agree this queue stuff is ridiculous. I understand their point of view, in a few weeks they will only need X servers, while right now for launch they probably need X*2, but they''re not going to invest in the extra hardware, just makes it frustrating for us paying customers.

yeah but at least we are able to get started. No postings on the main page saying that servers are down. I would be more afraid of that

EDIT: didn''t know if had gone down

Blackhand did get taken down mid-afternoon EST for the crazy lag problems. They must have changed something because since then it hasn''t been near as bad.

EDIT: Number 166!

Yep this queue situation is totally ridiculous. I''m somewhat underwhelmed with EQ2 but at least I have never had to wait to play a product I forked over good money for. This is total crap and they should not have launched with the servers not being able to handle the load. I will put up with this exactly one night and then that''s it unless they make very serious commitments about extending the $50 first month play time.

I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so!

EDIT:

This problem has nothing to do with the shards not being able to support the player load. The problem is so many people all trying to log into the game world at once. Every MMORPG features a queue and being in that queue has nothing to do with the shards saying "too many people online!" the game can support you once you are in the game. The queue is just how you get into the game. They could have 100x the servers and if the players all tried to log into the servers at once you would be placed into a queue.

If having people notice the queue is the worst thing to happen during their launch, then you better thank your lucky stars. Any time they do a server restart, players are going to be queued up.

Hmmm... I knew I shouldnt have logged out when I went to go get something to pre-eat.

I had a solid 10 hours of straight play before that.

I queued in at dinner time EST at around number 60. Took like 2 minutes. I played about 8-10 hours today with no noticeable lag except around 6pm EST, when I took a break for dinner. No troubles, even when Blackhand was full. Dunno what to make of that, but there it is.

Just got in.

I wouldn''t call it a disaster. There are a few bumps in the road but that is about as smooth as you can get for a launch of this magnitude. Just played for 5 hours without much issue besides loot lag from time to time.

It''s chunky peanut butter for me tonight, I got in about an hour with RR before I logged to spend time with the wife but when I got back it''s unplayable.

Blizzard''s problems with WoW are nothing compared to the insanity that took place when Star Wars Galaxies was released. Creating an account became impossible through Internet Explorer due to the SOE pages timing out. The unofficial solution to this was to use a freeware web browser instead. Servers were going up and down so fast that SOE couldn''t keep the status ticker updated. Three days after launch and people were still having issues trying to connect to servers which were typically down for maintenance. Patches to correct the numerous problems added up to hundreds of megs. SOE managed to perform a complete cluster-**** on a product which should/could have been a milestone for the genre instead of a failure (and I do consider it a failure).

I don''t mind the WoW queues, in fact I think it''s great news. It just means that more people are signing up for WoW than expected. It means that Blizzard will have the funds to properly finance their infrastructure and continue their winning tradition. Give it a week for everything to stabalize as people move over to less populated servers and if the caps are still in place I''ll be amazed. And be happy we can all play the game together reasonably lag free because if this was SWG we''d be screaming at CSRs for the next three days.

I would quit now and get your money back!

Less people for me to compete with

Roger that.

Heh MMORPG Launch=problems...
haven''t had a MMORPG yet that hasn''t had issues at launch.

(LOL unless someone else posts, I''ll dominate the frontpage recent threads, w00t for working overnights!)

It''s coming close to a disaster. It''s 7:30am and I''ve got loot lag of over 5m. This is not in a newb zone (Westfall) and it''s killed me twice now. I was willing to give them some slack for the lag in beta, but this is bullsh*t.

As a bonus, the login server for the forums is ""down"" so I can''t ask/bitch/comment on the situation. Convenient.

good lord.. GWJ is turning into another typical MMORPG forum..

AAIIIEEEE! RUN for the hills..

The First person to threaten a class action lawsuit against Blizzard means I''m outta here...

Yeah, God forbid anyone get annoyed because the game doesn''t work...

Eeek - glad I decided to wait a couple of weeks to pick it up.

Honestly, I think some expectations were out of whack here. All of us are gamers, we follow if not play other MMORPGs. We know that there are massive overcrowding issues at launch. To expect anything else is unrealistic.

Try to remember that there is a really good gaming experience to be had here and the amount of frustration you are experiencing now is miniscule next to the hundreds of hours of quality gaming available to you!

Don''t let the door hit you on the ass on your way out?

Sounds like these people have legitimate complaints. Should they wait a few months for things to settle down before complaining? I don''t think so. Having que on a server is retarded. Why didn''t they just limit the # of people that can sign up per server? That would have been infinately more acceptable then making them wait.

I was going to buy this game tonight, but perhaps I will wait until after the holiday to see what people say it is like.

I don''t see what the big deal is, maybe for people new to MMORPGs it''s like ""Oh man I can''t play the game after I install it! Crap!"" Does it suck? Yeah. But thank your lucky stars that your only problem is you have to wait a while to login. As long as ""a while"" isn''t ""several weeks"", you''re still beating any other MMO launch ever. It''s like getting mad that a new car can''t fly and run on water, it sucks but it''s an unrealistic expectation.

No, it''s not THAT big of a deal, but it does still suck.

Well just to play the devil''s advocate.

Logged into the server last night at about 8:45 ESt, played till about midnight. No problems with lag, no problems with queue. The spawn rate was excellent, best I had seen it. I had no trouble at all collecting all the bits and pieces to finish all the Night Elf noob quests and make it out of the starting zone.

Made it to level 7 with no hiccups, crashes or otherwise.

I gotta second Garrad''s thought. Maybe it was just the server we were on (we tried to pick a server with an unappealing name, hoping for a lower population), but the worst thing I saw all night was 5-6 secs of loot lag half a dozen times over 6 hours of play. I thought it was fantastic - for me, it was as good as the CoH launch.

Actually, I believe that CoH had a nearly flawless launch. Of course, I canceled my account after the first month but it wasn''t due to server/lag/connection issues.

Blackhand was completely unplayable for me yesterday afternoon/evening. Character creation, looting, purchasing, etc all took far more time than I was willing to tolerate.

With that said, I played on an East Coast server (Bloodhoof) from about 9-1 without many problems. An occasional lag storm would pass through but nothing that really hampered my fun. Looks like I might be staying there.

Chum

After I played my main all night, I took a break and played Pirates. I then went back to play one of my alts and guess what? In 2 hours, I had no loot lag and no server queue. Guess the sky isn''t falling completely.

Weren''t CoH as well as EQ2s'' launches pretty glitch free?

Notice in my posts I did not say WoW was a disaster, just that being in a queue of 400 to login is very much not optimal. I am still having a lot of fun with the game, have my mage up to level 9 if I remember right. This is my first MMOG so I wasn''t sure what to expect but so far I am happy, just frustrated in some areas.

Hmmm... I knew I shouldnt have logged out when I went to go get something to pre-eat.

I had a solid 10 hours of straight play before that.

The problem isn''t just that there''s a queue... it''s that it takes 2-5m to loot a body, flower, complete a trade, get something from a vendor. In the early hours of a weekday.

I''ve played MMORPGs since The Realm, beta''d EQ, DAoC, etc... I know what to expect. My complaint is that Blizzard *assured* everyone all the problems were due to their assertation code still being in the beta and everything would be fine come launch. You know what... I guess the real problem here is I believed them.

Maybe it''s just the server I''m on, but this is one of the worst MMORPG experiences I''ve ever paid for. It''s worse than the worst day in beta and I can cite quantitative examples. And I''m paying for the privilege, even. So yes, I''m a little pissed. I *want* to be singing their praises, because when this damn game works, it''s amazing.
