Just picked up the Strat guide for Wow

This thing is HUGE! It's 429 pages, full color, small print and very large. Well worth it. My EB manager was nervous selling it, but he didn't let have a street date for the guide as the game did, so he let me get it when I made sure he knew I wasn't leaving without it!

Are there just screenshots or is there any decent artwork in there?

My usual gripe with MMORPG strat guides is that by the time they are printed they are useless...for example are the last minute Paladin changes in there?

But if it has cool artwork it could be worth the $25 as a collectors item or cool item for lovers of all things Blizzard

Did he happen to mention if he had the actual game in stock yet? My guess is no, but just curious.

I agree. These things are rendered obsolete way too fast. Blizzard has also been very good about putting a lot of this stuff up right on their site. However, if this is the one with the drawings by Gabe & Tycho I may pony up just for that. Any maps?

Holy crappa! Guru, check this out:

It''s a strategy guide binder that comes with free updates that you can add to the binder!

If I remember right, the Monday post on Penny Arcade said that they were responsible for some of the artwork. I''d have to thumb through it first and see if there was anything of value but after dropping $70 on the CE, I don''t think the guide will be in my budget.

Dude, I''m so gonna buy that. I wish there was an EBGames around me so I could look at one before I buy it.

Only thing: cover choice is not available? So I''m stuck with Horde if that''s what some 5 dollar an hour factory worker wants to give that one to me?

Anyone going Horde want to ally with me so we can maximize our chances at getting the one we want?

Yep. I''ve had that baby on preorder for a couple of weeks now.

I''m such a sucker for stuff like that, it rounds out the whole CE package.

Doesn''t that round out to $110 or so?

I bought it.

Anyone desperately wanting Horde that would be willing to trade if we end up with the wrong ones?

But it''s only money, Druid. Such a small thing in the big picture of all the gaming goodness awaiting me.

Now that is a way to do a strat guide!

*Sigh* Everyone is going to get some crafted WoW items for Christmas

Is this the 429 page one? If so I''m getting it tommorow!

This is defintely worth the money. It''s in complete color, there are WoW comics throughout the guide by Penny Arcade, maps, quest tables, full profession info, etc. This isn''t some typical Prima lame guide. This is a piece of frickin'' art!

BTW, it''s 429 pages long. Huge size and small print. Couldn''t ask for more!

Damn, now my curiousity is piqued. I''ll have to go check it out in person. Is it only at EBGames?

[Edit to add:] Wierd, gamestop and EBgames both have the limited edition one (binder), but the bradygames website only lists the regular one.

The game is so polished, Im sure the quest guides will remain largely intact. If 70% of the quest info remains unchanged the guide would be a valuable resource for those into that sort of thing. I could see experienced players falling back on it to see if there are any quests they missed.

It will be interesting to see how it is written. If they give primer''s on the classes it wouldnt be all that bad. However, class specifics are likely to change and will be the first part to get dated.

I dont think the maps are going to change. That could provide some use. Say for instance you want to look at a map for an area you arent in. You can use the in game map simple enough but you can also flip to a page in the book without losing any screen real estate.

They could also give a ""how to"" section on starting trade skills.

Its always tough to write a guide with a game thats this accessible.

As cool as the guide sounds (especially for the PA comics) I don''t know that I''d want it on hand when I''m playing. If I knew what was coming and where I was going all the time (or had the ability to know) I don''t think I''d have as much fun or leave much room for surprise. It does sound really sexy though, especially for some in-depth idea of what to expect in the later levels for each character class in terms of skills and spells.

Thank you Certis, that idea has been sitting on the tip of my fingers for about a week now. I mean, I see several ways to play this game. Explore, and use the clues given to you to figure things out. Bitch and moan in General chat because ""no one will tell me where Iron Forge is"". Or just go to info sources like www.thottbot.com, and leave all the exploring and discovery to other people. The latter of the 3 will end up with characters exactly like other people who follow the formulas on these web sites. I started to feel the grind a few days ago, and I knew it was because I had started hitting up info sources too much. My sense of discovery had been hiding away for a bit. So I took a daring jog into contested territory(I love the anticipation when ever I do this), and explored some new areas.

Alright, I''m going to use that line on my wife. Wish me luck.

Note: Choice of cover is not available.

I...I, ugh

I totally agree with the mystery and excitement of finding a new quest and then figuring out how to complete it.

Except... when it''s hour four, you can''t find the NPC and you''re beginning to think that s/he''s there, s/he''s just hiding from you and the only way to get them to come out is to drop Stoutheart Ales on the ground and tackle them when they decloak, the little bastard(ette). At that point, yah, $30 is a small price to pay.

The other reason I''d say this would be a hell of an investment would be serious PvP folks... no point lingering in the crunchy levels, better race to 60 to stay competitive.

To confirm, there''s only one guide, it just comes with two different and unselectable covers?

I just like to scream on the general channel. I admit it. I don''t need no strategy guide as long as there are people playing who have the strategy guide.

I generally buy strat guides for collector purposes only (plus I like picture books ) and rarely use them except in instances where I get totally stuck on a level or want to take a peek at the map to prevent tedious backtracking because I missed an area.

I had to resort to web-surfing last night for the first time to finish a quest. Ok, had to is probably an overstatement, but I''d been wandering around the Venture Co. Mine for about 2 hours trying to find Inspector Fizsprocket with no luck. Turned out that rather than being deep in the mine or on the top levels (which is where I kinda assume named bosses will be) he was 2 1/2 minutes from the entrance. Hunh.

On the plus side, the deep parts of the mine were really cool, and I did find a hidden (or at least hard to access) Engineer Trainer...

The World of Warcraft Strategy guide should be in stores tomorrow. I mentioned a few days ago that the book is full of original comic strips by Tycho and I. So we''re going to go to our local EB around lunch and sign all the copies they have. If you want to, you can come by and say hi. We''ll be at the EB in the Northgate mall around 12:30. Or you should be able to drop in there later and at least pick up an autographed copy.

Sim is the one in the link the one you bought at EB? If so I am going to lean on the guy at my EB - its nice to be imposing at times :)....

I was just at EB and they had the softcover version on the shelves. I asked about the binder and she said she hadn''t received any of those yet. She was expecting them tomorrow.

Just so you know, Mantis, they''re talking about Seattle, not Cali. And since I live 2 blocks from Northgate Mall, I think I''ll go get a copy and have them sign it. I''ll let you know how it goes.

Fixed. I''m running slow today.

Good luck!

Wasn''t too busy at EB, Tycho and Gabe were totally nice (I think I was the first person to ask for a personalized copy) and the Strat Guide really does look well done. I hate strategy guides, but maybe I''ll use this a little.

There weren''t any collector''s edition guides in store, however. Maybe they''re delayed or something. Oh well.

For some reason (I honestly don''t know why), I think the collector''s editions arrive tomorrow.
