R.I.P. O.D.B.

This is my concern lately here too... I mean we had Scott Peterson (who is white) found guilty of murdering his wife and unborn child and that doesnt register a blip here..

Untrue. This been duly addressed in P&C forum.

Holy freaking mother of grit-eating christ. I''m not even thirty yet and I have no idea what the holy hell you guys are talking about. Seriously. I read the whole thread and ... I got nothing. ODB? WuTang? Nothing, man. I got absolutely nothing. WTF? I mean, I know I''m white and all, but come on! And when did LedZepplin break up? Weren''t they just working on a new album?

C ... D ...?

Would any of ODB apologist be so nice as to copy/paste some of his most notable lyrics here so as to impress the rest of us?

How do you figure? Was there not enough righteous anger in that thread?

I get the feeling that you are really TRYING to be offended here.

Your not getting it...just because YOU dont like something doesnt mean its garbage.

Who is trying? I was offended several posts ago..

The way its going I''m probably going to get pissed off shortly..but in the end perhaps I''ll get a better idea of whats going on here.

If it is such well-written verse, separating it from the usual presentation may well prove what a talented artist he was to the doubters. Just because I don''t particularly like certain musical styles doesn''t mean I can''t appreciate good lyrics, particularly if there''s a deeper message that gets lost in the heart-jiggling subsonic waves produced oversized subwoofers.

Who is to say you''d find it well written? Or even be able to relate to it? I know nothing about you or where you came from..

I know myself and how I relate to it..

Besides..its relatively easy to go listen to samples of his work and WuTang''s first album (he had a limited role in the second album)

Who is to say you''d find it well written? Or even be able to relate to it? I know nothing about you or where you came from..

Now you''re just being difficult. Yes, I could go seek out lyrics, but having no frame of reference, I could just as easily find the worst example as the best. If he''s so talented that noone cares enough to say ""No, really, check this out"" to those that don''t know, well, maybe it''s not empirically ""good"".

Yeah, I could go listen to samples, but that just shows you are missing the point about separating the lyrics from the presentation.

Whatever.

Is that really what we''ve come to?

Your lyrics suck, so that proves your worthless and so I''m glad you and all your rap buddies are dead?

But I can argument my way around the point as to WHY I don''t happen to like it and refuse to eulogize this guy or to admire his work.

Besides, you''re confusing (perhaps intentionally) the causality of this whole thing. It''s not ""it''s garbage because I don''t like it"". It''s precisely the opposite: ""I don''t like it because it''s garbage"". I hope that if you''re inclined to discuss it, you can bring up the points that highlight the merits of his work and pitfalls of my (and others'') arguments.

Just please don''t bring it down to a matter of taste. Tastes can be bad, shallow, and crass, too.

Your lyrics suck, so that proves your worthless and so I''m glad you and all your rap buddies are dead?

No, I never implied that I outright WISHED him (or others) death. What I said is that he HIMSELF must have had a death wish if he lived a life like that.

Don''t put your words in my mouth, white man!

Oh, you kids. All this arguing, controversy -- ODB would have *wanted* it this way!

I''m not attempting to argue that ODB is a great artist that appealed to everyone. I''m not trying to make you, through his death, appreciate his music. ODB will always be an iconic figure in the rap industry, and The Wu-Tang Clan will be respected as one of the greatest groups to come. That won''t change whether you like him or not. I said ""it''s sad that he''s dead"" and what came back was ""no, no it''s not sad, because he was a horrible human being and I don''t like his music."" I was defending him as a human being who died tragically at 35, not as an artist that everyone should now like.

This thread is going to P&C, where it now belongs.

KIYAH!!

This thread is going to P&C, where it now belongs.

But now everyone will stop looking at it!!!

It''ll be me, Robear, and Ulairi!!!

I look at all the threads in P&C. I just don''t comment often because I feel my towering intellect would overwhelm your puny minds.

so the mark of a good song to YOU is only in the lyrics??

I disagree... but check out his first album and WuTang''s first album you''ll find plenty of examples of his work and his best stuff.

ODB was never like the so called rappers you see on MTV.. dont lump him into that group.

I''m not a fan of overblown relavatism. Some things are better than others in the artistic world. There is a point at which minds can differ, but there is also a point where attempts to say, ""Everything is equal, no opinion is more valid than any other"" crosses into the absurd. A good artist is demeaned by stating that everyone else who throws something on paper is just as good.

That being said, due to the call for lyric samples, I went to a googled website and picked a set of lyrics at random from O.D.B. (the website said they were O.D.B.; my apologies if I am mistaken):

Drug Free (Remix) Lyrics
(feat. M.M.O.)
[Ol'' Dirty Bastard]
Kids, don''t get high
Mothaf*ckas had me up in this mothaf*cka, last night and sh*t
I''m cocained the f*ck up
Paranoid as a motha.. yo I''m paranoid as a f*cka
Yeah, f*ck that.. yo I f*ck around and sh*t
I sprained both of my f*ckin'' fingers
This sh*t.. man a nigga need to get.. I''m tired of gettin'' high like that
Ain''t nobody came in my mothaf*ckin'' school with no mothaf*ckin'' drugs
Stop f*ckin'' wit me niggas, stop f*ckin'' wit me
Nigga, that sh*ts all in my family, nigga
Stop f*ckin'' wit me, the f*ck is you talkin'' bout?
On the strength, what the f*ck is you talkin'' bout?
We''ve been here too many years to stop f*ckin'' wit me
Nigga I''m scared of the trigga
While I''m the life giver and the life taker
I''m your father-in-law, married to mother-in-law
Got the universe movin'' in the form of the sea-saw
You killed 2Pac and Biggie, you know they was rollin'' wit me
You paid for your stupidity
You can''t do nothin'' to me! I let your f*ckin'' eagle fly free
Nigga, I''m pioneerin'' all the sound ya hearin''
Earth from steerin'', high mountaineerin''
I sincerely f*ck you up severly by the yearly
Keep the sky clearly
I''m straight from the seventies
Mockneck colors wit ya Female Doggo ass disappearance
Give me clearance, I don''t want no f*ckin'' interference!
I''m the Big Black Jesus!
Throw ya hands in the air! And wave ''em, f*ckin'' Wu don''t care!
And if ya +''Bout It, ''Bout It+
Like we''re +''Bout It, ''Bout It+, let me hear ya say, ""Oh yeah!""
Oh yeah! Well, oh yeah!
I smoke woolers too, I majored the dust
Uh, it''s legal for me
I drink everything, I don''t give a f*ck
It''s part of the universe
Hey, what else I do? I do what I do
Man, f*ck that! I stays high!
I don''t give a f*ck!
[Trigg''nomm]
Yo yo yo I don''t stop at the booze, no not, can''t drop the tool
So no to C.Rules and go to these schools
Now who thinkin'' elementary, class
I be see no to ecstacy and hash
Headed to the penitentiary one way
Blackin'' out sippin'', dust plus gun play
Knucklehead nigga in a stolen Hyundai
Sip this two, a one-to-three on Monday
If I''d have stayed in school and said no to drugs
I''d probably just be what my moms thought I was
I probably wouldn''t be here pleadin'' with the judge
And Female Doggoin'', it''s silly, hope the God forgive it
[Ol'' Dirty Bastard]
(Yeah) Kids, don''t use drugs! (What what what what? M.M.O!)
Durg Free! Drug Free! Drug Free!
Durg Free! Drug Free! Drug Free!
Drug Free! Drug Free!
[beat cuts off]
Dun-dun-dun, dun-dun-dun
Dunh, do-do-do-duh-duh-duh
Dun-dun-dun
Maybe I was a fool, dun-do-na-na-na
When you say gettin'' high wasn''t cool, do-na-na-na
When I got used to this stuff, dun-duh-na-na-na
[snorting] Wasn''t enough..
[beat comes back in]
Drug Free! Drug Free! Drug Free!
[Itchy-Fingas Sha]
Eh-yo, we worldwide, Drug Free but we all hide
Pumpin'' adrenaline through all sides
Most guys need coke to cope, the only smoke I choke
is when I burn niggas verse for verse
My drug caper, stoppin'' ya heart just like a pacemaker
We hold weight so we cross trainers
And headbangers with these black Rangers
Feds tryin'' to contain us
Cuz we live dangerous, drug paraphanelias
My life changes, switch up frames in different angles
Crack''ll leave ya dead or with shackles on ya ankles
Loves and thank yous, but it''s a privelage for me
Givin'' ''em Drug Free style, M.M.O., O.D.B.
[Outro: M.M.O.]
Baby.. Baby Jesus, Baby Jesus
Deadly Venoms - Chameleon, Poison, Scorpion, Viper
Chameleon, Poison, Scorpion, Viper

So let me get this straight, because some people said they don''t like gangsta rap there is the insinuation of racism?

I call bullsh*t.

I *HATE* gangsta rap, partly because it does nothing more than reinforce every negative stereotype of blacks there is. Not to mention, for some reason these ""artists"", and I''m going to include Eminem here, can say any anti-gay, racist, or chauvinistic thing that pops into their head and no one calls them on the carpet for it. Their antics and lyrics are blissfully ignored by the American public and when someone does speak out they are accused of racism.

Except that a friend of mine, who happens to be a black Dallas Police Sergeant, doesn''t think too highly of this music either. Bill Cosby has also been speaking out against the culture of blame in the black community. I look to the gangsta rappers for a lot of the inspiration behind the black community''s problems.

The man died by his own life choices. He wasn''t in an accident, he wasn''t tragically murdered, and he didn''t even get depressed and off himself. He continually eroded his body to the point it wouldn''t function anymore. At 35 years of age.

He effectively killed himself, but not intentionally. Or maybe he did, maybe he just kept using drugs even though he knew what it was doing to him.

I don''t know his music, I could give a crap about his rap sheet, and it doesn''t matter that he was black. All I know is that he could be alive today, but not for his own poor decisions.

But the insinuations of racism are just plain low. It''s one of the reasons we can''t get a meaningful dialogue about real racial problems in this country. Someone is always so quick to pull out that damn race card.

Don''t you realize that by getting angry at someone for calling you racist all your doing is proving you are because you got upset? You should have said ""Aww shucks, I don''t dislike black people!"" and shot happy rays out of your ass...

Yeah, that''s what we call sarcasm folks because Jason_O is 110% correct.

O.D.B. was not some upstanding citizen who was furthering the standing/cause of his community/culture. He was just as much of an asshole as a lot of the other people out there in life.

When I saw the comment I about Scott Petersen not getting much attention here I though ""Yeah? So? I think we all pretty much agreed the f*cker should fry."" (obviously not 100%..but still) where as apparently there is a debate over whether someone deserved to die directly because of the lifestyle they led.

Yes, he did.

My ass is all out of happy rays.

My Faction with Jason_O: +5

Whatever the hell that means. Nothing to add... Jason pretty much summed it up.
