Games bought but never played

Along the lines of the thread "Games that won't let you go" - when I read that thread it got me thinking about the games at the opposite end of the spectrum: games which I still cringe at having purchased either because they were terrible or I just never got into them.

My first pc game purchase was Ultima IX: Ascension (6.4 at Gamespot) - and it has to be the worst game I've ever bought. Its box sits among all the other games I own and serves as a reminder of why I don't buy before reading reviews. I bought it on impulse after looking at the box in the store; it promised "complete immersion into the rich fantasy world of Britannia".

SWAT 3 although not a bad game, I just never actually played it beyond a couple hours. Which is a shame.

Star Wars Battlefield sits unopened . . . .

Never have and never will. I never impulse buy games, everything is calculated.

Deus Ex 2. Bought it a couple of months ago, never had the urge to play it, sold it last month. Which is really weird for me, I usually only buy one game a month, if that, so I usually make my purchases really count.

The Wheel of Time.

*Thinks* I think I''m with Flux on that one, the only way I part with my cash is if I know it''s going to get some decent play time.

But on the other hand, I do that with old-school games from time to time. I picked up ""Laura Bow and the Dagger of Amon Ra"" and ""Heroes Quest"" a while back at the local thrift store, because they were in their full, boxed glory, and my gaming heritage is so 80''s Sierra Quests.

Gotta wipe that nostalgic tear out of my eye.

I still have Phantom Brave and FFX2 sitting in shrink-wrap on my entertainment center. *sigh*

WarCraft III. Commandos 3.

Despite it''s flaws, I think you missed out. I played through the Xbox version and stuck it out to the end, and when I overlooked the bad points (aka. ""Morrowind Syndrome"") it was an awesom experience.

I think the best way to go into that game is by thinking there was no previous game.

Theif 3 is another one that I hear is good once you ""get into"" it. I haven''t reached that point yet, but maybe one day I will.

Fallout 2. Part of the Fallout double pack. Hated Fallout 1. Never installed 2.

Tony Hawk 4(PS2) - technically, played it once, it sucked compared to the memory of the first one, shelved it.

Final Fantasy VII - played once for 30 minutes. Hated it. Sold it back to blockbuster at a huge loss. Fortunately, I bought it used.

Vampire: Redemption - tried it for 30 minutes or so. God, that sucked.

As an aside, 1up.com has an ongoing series/blog/thingamajig called ""I Want My Money Back"" or something similar that dedicates a page or so to a single game so crappy that someone is still pissed about having paid real money for it. Funny stuff sometimes.

Missed out on a thoroughly entertaining game. I really liked it. The combat system, though complicated, was interesting, and I liked the plot line. A lot of folks seem to have panned it, though, so I can see where it wouldn''t have gotten any play.

You, however, are crazy.

The only game I''ve ever purchased and not played was SimEarth. The copy I picked up was about 10 years old (I played it when it first game out) and was grabbed for nostalgia reasons. I still like the way whales could evolve in jungle, as long as it was humid enough...

EDIT:

Sacrilege! Ah well, to each his/her/its own.

X2 is probably my most notable game in this area. I heard it was a good game, and was hankering for some spaceship action, but just never got into it. I think the simple, straightforward games like Starlancer and Freelancer have ruined my ability to enjoy a deeper space sim.

For absolute suckage:

Star Wars Rebellion & Nocturne

I''m sure there are others over the years, but nothing comes to mind.

For just not getting around to it:

Starcraft: Brood Wars (it''s sat unopened on a shelf for years).

Combat Mission: Beyond Overload and Squad Assault.

They both look like good games, but just never have gotten into them.

Oddly enough, I''ve played very little Burnout 3. I blame this on having other games around to distract me.

I bought Icewind Dale 2 on clearance last Christmas. I still haven''t installed it.
I bought Fallout 2 about 2 years ago. I still haven''t installed it.

I almost bought Deus Ex 2 yesterday becasue it was on clearance at Target for $7, but I realized that I would never actually get around to playing it....I''m actually proud of myself for being strong. It''s hard for me to pass up anything I''m even remotely interested in at less than $10.

Don''t play Burnout 3 if you value your free time. ""Just One Race"" will turn into like 40 in a row. Not kidding. Grab some visine too for those long sessions. Blinking = Crashing.

Combat Mission: Beyond Overload

That game is a diamond in the rough. I''ve had a blast playing it. I sometimes wish a big developer would rip-off their core mechanics and make one with higher production values.

The original developers are working on a Combat Mission 2 engine and hopefully it will sport sexier graphics, etc.

Ultima IX: Ascension (6.4 at Gamespot) - and it has to be the worst game I''ve ever bought.

I for one like the game for the most part... and i think I''m one of the few who finished it!
However:
Splinter Cell 1 - not finished
Splinter Cell 2 - not started
Thief 3 - not started
Final Fantasy x - not finished
Project Gothem Racing 1 and 2 - not finished
Legacy Kain - not finished
TOCA Racing - not finished
Onimusha 3 - not finished
Otogi 1 and 2 - not finished
DOAU - not finished
Deus Ex 2 - not finished
Resident Evil - not started
Metal Gear Solid TS - not started
F-zero - not started
Mortal Kombat Deception - not started
...hmm, 2 more that i can''t recall. Not including any for PC and Mac.

Lords of the Realm II, for $10. I think it took me a year to get it out of the shrink wrap. I have never inserted it into a computer.

I for one like the game for the most part... and i think I''m one of the few who finished it!

I played it for maybe 10 hours.

Some years later I decided to check it out again considering it may have been well patched up. Alas, I couldn''t even get it to run with modern graphics cards/drivers.

Don''t play Burnout 3 if you value your free time. ""Just One Race""

Also, don''t bother with anything but Career/Campaign/whatever they call it Mode. Even if you think you only want to hop in and race once, let your points go towards your savegame file.

I had to play the game on Intel 200Mhz, 64mb, 16mb Voodoo 3 card. Which aperantly is the only card that can run the game. I agree though that the game is in really big need of a patch which will never be made.

I am most ashamed of only spending an hour or two with Baldurs Gate, me thinks I even have the 7 cds somewhere...wonder how the graphics would hold up, will have to rummage through storage when I get home.

Ah, thanks for reminding me.
Add BG to my list. Less than an hour, two or three times over two years. Just. Didn''t. Like. It.
Blech. What a waste.

Half-Life. I bought it 5 yrs ago or so and never did play much of it. I saw the disaster in the beginning and that was about it. AT least until a few weeks ago when I loaded ''er back onto my hard drive and spent 2 or 3 late nights on it. The game held up pretty well. I was most impressed with the sound (effects and voices and even music.) I think the sound in this game would stand up against today''s best games. Also the nice thing was despite a few bugs with xp and the fact you moved a bit too fast it ran super smooth. One good thing about playing older games. They generally run better.

Lets see, I am going to include games that I just played briefly and or recieved after someone finished them;

Warcraft 3, Freelancer, Icewind Dale 2, Silent Storm, Balders Gate Dark Alliance, Jedi Knight 2, D&D Heroes, Knights of the old republic, Star Wars clone wars(came with my Xbox), oh and Rome :Total War! They all sit mocking me and my lack of free time!

Games I can`t bring myself to finish; Neverwinter Nights, Delta force: Blackhawk down, and Operation Flashpoint

Goblin Commander. I bought a cheap copy of the Xbox version and it hasn''t even seen the inside of my console yet.

I bought the Hobbit for $2.50, thinking that I could not go wrong with a LOTR game for that price.

I was wrong.

Rome: Total War.

Played it for an hour, was terribly impressed, and for some reason I can''t identify or explain, never played it again.

The icon stares accusingly at me from my desktop, but we both know it''s destined for the recycle bin...

Man, I can not believe some of the games on this list. You guys make me a sad panda.

I have this thing where i''ll go into a store and decide to be financially responsible and buy a bargain bin game instead of the latest and greatest game that I really want on the shelf. Unfortunately despite my altruistic goals I usually end up playing the bargain game for about 1-5 hours and then buying the new game a couple of days later and forgetting about the bargain game.

My most recent bargain bin blunder is Beyond Good and Evil which I just bought for the XBox a few days ago and put about 5 hours into. However with the WoW beta and then EQ2 slated to take up more time than I can imagine in the next few months I doubt i''ll ever get back to Beyond Good and Evil.

Don''t get me wrong I enjoyed BG&E a great deal while I was playing it but by the time I think about it again i''m sure i''ll have several other titles I would rather play. But it''s ok I have a master plan. I figure in 30 years or so when I retire I can dig up all these old games I have sitting on the shelves dust off the old XBox and play them straight through till the day I die
