Games that won't let you go...

I'm playing freakin' Morrowind again. I had to install the face replacements and better bodies mod so that it looked more up-to-date, but aside from my favorite house mod I'm playing it more or less untouched. (Vivec Expansion doesn't count, it makes it worth visiting!)

I also started playing Freedom Force again, mostly because my kids get a kick out of watching it.

The Specialists Mod for Half-Life is also super-addictive. Deathmatch against bots has never been so much fun.

Soul Calibur II for X-Box remains a guilty pleasure as well.

X-Com, ten years later and I still have it installed on every computer I use at home and work.

Hi my name is Coldforged and I still play Quake 3.

Planetscape: Torment.

Mech Commander 2

Diablo 2:LoD

Roller Coaster Tycoon 2

I still pickup Freedom Fighters on Xbox on occasion.

I also find myself installing and playing through Starcraft at least once or twice a year. And I still play all the way through Kill.switch on xbox fairly often too. The game''s short and great to just run through in one sitting.

XCOM junkies are everywhere. That game left wrecked lives and sleepless nights in its wake. My equivalent would be Fallout. I ate, slept and obsessed about that damn game.

SimCity 4. I''ve been playing it since the day it was released. Last encounter: this weekend.

Fang: yeah, RCT2 is really cool. I must get RCT3 next - even though it''s done by completely different people, it seems to be getting pretty good reviews...

KOTOR. Don''t know why...

i think me and you are the only ones who really loved Mech Commander 2...

Man that game was awesome... I just wish they would hurry up and make another one

I still play Enemy Territory...its on all my PC''s and at work..when I get frustrated I''ll play for an hour to get some anger out

Civ3 always find its way back onto the PC. It''s a great game to play with a drink in one hand.

I keep going back to Half Life, as well. Like a favorite book that I read over and over.

Never played Civ III, but I have Civ II installed on two different computers.

Just pathetic I know.

Civ III, Fallout, EU2, CM.

Diablo 2 LOD. Definitely. That one I''ll be playing until I die.

I must have played Civ 3 a billion times and put hundreds of ours into it. And you know what? I''ve never finished a single game on any difficultly higher than the lowest setting.

THAT is what''s pathetic. I''m just terrible at it, mostly because I get bored with the micro-management of the endgame.

Others that stole my life:
Myth 2 online
Jedi Knight 2 online
Baldur''s Gate 2 [finished it about 5 times so far...]
Deus Ex 1
Tactical Ops (unreal tournament mod)
Tribes 2
Everquest

Oh way too many to mention:

Jumpgate (of course)
Freespace 2 (still one of my all-time favorites)
Tie Fighter
Master of Orion II
Master of Magic
Darklands
Carmageddon 1 or 2
Starflight 1 and 2
X-Com
The Close Combat series
Longbow 2
European Air War
1942: Pacific Air War
Comanche Vs. Hokum
Seven Kingdoms II
Total Annihilation
Hardwar

These are games that have permanent residency on my hard drive.

I picked up a Sega Genesis for $9 and have been playing World Series Baseball on it as well as X-men one and two.

Also

Warcraft 3 and TFT. Love those games. I''m also jumping back into Rise of Nations, although it''s not that old.

I''m with you on the hatred of the Civ3 end game. It gets to be a real drag to put so much effort into building a mighty, mighty empire only to have to spend an hour per turn ''giving them entertainment'' while you try to give your neighbors a shellacking.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance at the moment, but that''s due to a nice little commute to work ever day

The Specialists Mod for Half-Life is also super-addictive. Deathmatch against bots has never been so much fun.

I hear you. I play half life day of defeat about daily. in fact it''s the only game I play regularly. I''m soon fixing that, but this is my curse. I''d play the specialists but for some reason I can''t get it to work online or find servers through steam.

Give the man a prize and a 12 step program. I think we have a winner.

Starcraft. I don''t play it that often any more, but I can''t imagine having a computer that doesn''t have Starcraft installed.

So any game we put dangerous amounts of time into and/or reinstalled to play well after it was socially acceptable to do so...

Diablo2:LoD - Huge initial addiction followed by many marathon Act I - V LAN parties. Huge time reinvested on Bnet when 1.10 came out.

Starcraft (+expansion) - My old friend. Only stopped playing on LANs cause 3 human opponents vs me was no challenge. Never got into Bnet with this cause of the idiot internet user Law.

Civ 3 - Played often and played well. I can win a game on the 4th difficulty without trouble. This one, like all turn-based games, was responsible for a lot of darkness under my eyes.

Morrowind - Dominated my PC for quite a few weeks until I finished it.

Doom - Oh man, so many joyous hours of carnage.

City of Heroes - I am trying to wean myself off of this in prep for WoW but it looks like I am an addict in a bad way. I did manage to delete all but 3 of my toons. The hours in this one is truly frightening. Oh, and my first MMO game (Planetside beta doesn''t count cause it was free).

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - Initial investment was low, but my fiancee always has it on her PC and damned if I can''t avoid a game every few weeks.

More that I can''t remember, I''m sure.

The Thief series, mainly playing the fan missions. I''m better for the moment, but if the SDK for t3 ever gets released , say goodnight Gracie.

Mech Commander 2

Fang, I swear we''re like twin brothers seperated at birth or something sometime. MC2 is a game that makes me so sad because I love it so much!

I have no response to this.

Don''t worry. Some people still play the first one. At least yours has 16 bit colors.

only one mention for Heroes of Might and Magic series? Wow...I always have a copy of the latest version of that game on my hard drives...great game for laptops, too.

And btw for original poster, do you have a linky to the ""better face and body models"" mod for Morrowind?

I just bought Morrowind a couple of months ago (goty ed.) and graphics do seem a little lacking. Looking forward to getting into it though.

Another great reason to buy games late..all the patches and mods have been out and reviewed! You just have to install and enjoy!

And for those of you that mentioned Civ 3, if you don''t have Conquests expansion installed on top of ""plain vanilla"" Civ 3, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!?! I bought it just for the gameplay enhancements, which are significant - have not even tried the ""campaigns"" that are included. Makes a great game even better.

This is a beautiful list. I wish I could still play some: Darklands, Starflight, PAW, Hardwar, FreeSpace...

But as is:

MOO 1 & 2
X-Com
Close Combat
Combat Mission Beyond Overlord
America''s Army
Asheron''s Call

Currently : WoW
Old School: Starcraft

SimCity 4 has to be the game which has given me the most replay value of all time. So much so in fact that myself and a friend made a web application to make it easier to co-operatively play regions:

screenshots here:

try it here (quick registration needed):

Its been a month now since I last played it, but a few times in the last week I''ve found myself thinking I should work on a city or two. Maybe we can get a GWJ co-op game going?

Morrowind is another unique game which begs to be replayed - I''ve been waiting for the day I can play it at 1280x1024 with AA at a decent FPS before returning to it.

Enemy Territory in the FPS genre.

I''m expecting Rome Total War will be among these games.
