Great Deal on HL2 Collector's Edition

Not sure if this anywhere else in the forums and I know Certis will kill this thread if it is :). Anyhow Wal-Mart.com shows HL2 CE for 59.82 vice the 79.99 it is listed everywhere else. Shows it to ship 2 September as well.

I know this appeared somewhere in the forums about 2 weeks ago, because that''s when I took advantage of it :D. But it doesn''t hurt to revive the topic now that we''re closer to release.

I ordered it.. I figure I''ll get my quick fix with the Steam version and then I''ll have the Collectors edition show up eventually..

So if you pre-order the game from any store you can download the game from Steam? Is there a special coupon code you get or something?

Nope. You merely get the boxed version when they finally release it. TGG is merely elite somehow :).

Semi-off-topic, but what is the deal with ordering it through Steam? They say the pre-load should start tomorrow, but how do you buy the game so you get the pre-load? I can''t find anyplace to actually buy HL2 on Steam...Will it just show up when the pre-load is ready?

no...I have my ATI HL2 coupon from way back...that will allow me to download HL2 via Steam when it becomes available..

But I''d also like a CD version and the collectors edition looks pretty cool.

I suspect that the pre-load will just show up for everyone.. I could be wrong..but that would make the most sense..

The only people really who have allready ""purchased"" HL2 are ATI Coupon Holders..

You had two choices..send it your coupon with UPC from box and a reciept and you got the full game in the mail or register your coupon code on Steam to get it via Steam.

Does that mean anyone with Steam, even if they don''t want to buy HL2, will have > 2GB of HDD space eaten up by a game they don''t play? That would seriously dampen my enthusiasm for Steam.

uh...no..the pre-load screen asks you if you wish to download the files.. its not forced on anyone... thats with all games..

The games show up on your menu..you can the select to cache files local to play.

What''s in the CE? I''ve checked several major retailers and none of them are listing what the collector''s edition contains. I''m not one for ordering CE''s ""just because"". What are the goodies here?

That''s a great price for a CE (although no place I''ve seen has the contents listed yet), but I''m on the line with HL2. Shooters are the genre I get the least enjoyment from. I passed on HL when it was released, even after all the years of hype. And I''m not sure I want to invest in this one. Are there any decent previews around?

Is it the CE that will have HL 1 on the Source Engine? I never finished the first one<shameful kicking at the ground with my toe>, and there is a remote chance I may actually do so if I played it again on a more modern engine.

Half-Life 2 Script Leak

According to unconfirmed reports which emerged last night, developer Valve has been hit by another embarrassing leak - with the complete script to Half-Life 2, including the ""surprising"" ending, being released on the web.

Reports indicate that the developer actually distributed the script over the Steam distribution network by accident, with the inclusion of a file - intended for captioning purposes in the game - in one of the preview builds of Counter-Strike: Source which have been made available in the past week.

The first assets for the Half-Life 2 launch are expected to be pre-loaded onto the Steam network in the next 24 hours, with the release date of the game - as yet unconfirmed - thought to be only a few weeks away.

OMG!!@!@# another delay! Valve will have to flip the script!

argghhh!!

I don''t think they''ll delay over this...there''s no reason.

hehe...

Its funny how big a deal lots of people are trying to make this on the rest of the intraweb.

OMFG!@!@! Valve are screwed!! bunch of MORONS!!@#!@#!@!!!!!!

Oh, gotcha

What would be classic is if this was a decoy and the real script were delivered with the actual game.
Not that I think they would think of it, but damn it''d be hilarious.

I am tempted to preorder the CE from Wal-Mart, but my understanding is that all of the games will be upgraded to the new engine via Steam - not just CE version, but I could be wrong.

Well everyone else hates Steam, I hate Walmart. While it''s a nice price I''m not sure I want to buy it there.

Clarification would be nice, no? I ordered it, simply because I am still more comfortable with the boxed sales model. If Steam turns out to be IT, well, I missed out on a couple of days of gaming. No big loss, I have other games to beat :).

I have the ATI coupon so I have it through Steam, but I will probably order the CE edition through Wally Mart

Anyhow, can anyone tell me what''s IN the collector''s edition? It''s not really much of a deal if it''s just a few pieces of stupid crap.

I totally agree, even if Steam killed my parents I''d still use it over giving money to Wal-Mart.

I don''t think the pre-load is any sort of actual playable content. From what I understand, they''re basically uploading some elements early to get it out of the way...It''s certainly a positive sign of progress, but it''s not any sort of finished product.

So here''s my big concern about Half-Life 2 -

Based on everything I''ve read, you''ll have to be online and logged into Steam even to play the singleplayer game....what are the odds that Steam is going to crash hard on the release date, as everyone rushes home to play the game? It seems like it could be not unlike certain MMORPG launches....

I still haven''t been able to install steam on my new pc. The last time I installed it, it was included with a patch of CS, but since I didn''t install CS on my new PC I was just going to download steam by itself. It got to 5% and just stopped, an hour later it still hadn''t moved 1% so I just canceled the download and uninstalled what had already made it on to my computer. And what''s great about their uninstaller is that it deleted my desktop folder from my Documents & Settings directory... Not a big deal, just a minor annoyance having all of your icons dissappear, but a pretty odd mistake for them to make in their uninstall program.

They still have yet to convince me that steam was a good idea... I think I''ll be picking it up at Wal-mart...or anywhere with a real box & cd.

Based on everything I''ve read, you''ll have to be online and logged into Steam even to play the singleplayer game

Nope, you won''t have to be online and logged in to play the single player game. You can play offline.

You had two choices..send it your coupon with UPC from box and a reciept and you got the full game in the mail or register your coupon code on Steam to get it via Steam.

Could I still do this? I have a coupon from way back in the day (March-ish...) and I''d love a free game out of the deal. Even if... Steam cut me so bad, it make me wish it no cut me so bad.

Yes you can but you need to log into Steam and hot register product I already own etc... My coupon was from January and I did it today.

Ew, not nice news from the ol'' Walmart. From an email they sent me:
