Call Of Duty: What Do I Need To Download?

OK, I have no idea what I got myself into.

An innocent purchase via Amazon of a "gently used" copy of Call of Duty arrived at my door, just as I was salivating over Doom III.

Naturally, I installed both games, and then started looking for patches, maps, etc., for Call of Duty (Doom III I'm going to play vanilla).

Geez, how did all this stuff completely bypass my radar? Heat of Battle looks great, and there are a bajillion maps to DL. There is a really virulent (take that Elysium!) community around this game.

Looks like I'm going to be here a while.

So, since I know there must be at least one hardcore CoD gamer here-What should I download?

I was into CoD for awhile. Great SP play and the MP can be fun, if hectic.

I was unimpressed with the official homepage (bloated and uninformative imho: www.callofduty.com), but do a Google for
more better sites:

http://www.fpscentral.com/index.php?...

http://www.planetcallofduty.com/

for a start.

Don''t forget to check out

http://www.iwnation.com/Forums/index.php

Its the offical Infinity Ward site but theres a few boards for CoD. Quality stuff.

I played this non stop for quite some time and then stopped when my friends put it down. I just like playing with people I know that much more, that when my friends quit, it really didnt appeal to me much. The good news is, that an expansion is due out by the holiday season that I heard will add some new weapons and even vehicles.

Btw, in game play there are several wonderful maps( can''t remember the names now, but a nice ''Bastogne'' on and a couple good ''Normandy'' ones. In SP play, the Stalingrad one is amazing (and I if I remember correctly the whinning to get that as an MP map may have happened.) But sniper''s unfortunately rule (even with some patches to lessen the effect, although I haven''t played in awhile and maybe they finally go it ''right''). Bunny hopping again tho'', which I dislike. But still, fun and good maps. And I can''t remember if this is the game that originally didn''t have Punkbuster and is added in a later patch or not.

Yep, they just recently (well a few months back) added punkbuster support. I know a lot of people on another forum complained about it and wouldn''t even touch the MP because of it. Dunno why it took them so long to add it.

So how much did you pay Mateo? Will you have any problems with registering it and playing MP? I still havn''t played CoD, yet. Just hearing it has a battle of bastogne map makes me want to try it. If I watch Band of Brothers again it''ll be hard to resist.

yes, punkbuster was added to this in a patch.
The bunnyhopping got slowed down a few notches after one of the patches reduced your run speed if you bunnyhopped.
I prefer to limit the games to no scoped sniper rifles. I love the feel of the iron sights. In my opinion, no game has done iron sights better than this.

Sniper rifles are horrible in this one.. just like MOHAA. Some of the Developers are from the team that made the original MOHAA, so if you liked that gameplay you will love this one. The Iron sights on the KAR98 and M1''s are the best ever, if you have good eyes you can use a rifle like a sniper rifle on large maps.

About the expansion: What weapons could they possibly add?? They pretty much have every major weapon covered that was used in the war.. ever threw in the FG42 with a sniper scope attached for *uber l33t* players. I can think that they can add Italian and Japanese weapons, as well as the minor powers, as well as the grease gun and that is about it. If they dare add a shotgun they will completely ruin the game just like MOHAA shottie whores do.

And if you hate bunny-hopping, find a well-moderated tactical server. They will prefer that you use squad tactics (cover, suppresion fire, play as an actual group, etc) and less ""run and gun"" . Rifle-only servers are nice too.

O.k. then, this is the one I was thinking about. You have to add
your own PB folder, but if you go to their site (i.e. PB''s) they have a CoD area that helps you along.

I agree, best iron sights yet.

Also, to clarify, it''s a ''Bastogne'', ''Ardennes Offensive'' type map. None of the maps could be called ''large'' compared to BF or OFP (guess I should add JO too!), but large enough to manuever well and flank. Some more then others. On the whole, nicely designed and wonderful to look at.

Oh and one other thing, the one major complaint was the ''duck walk'' type graphics when you move around in a crouch (dang, I can''t remember if that was the default movement graphic or not now...geesh. Anyway, to me not a big deal, but other''s were really bothered by it) (AA has the best imho

The expansion (according to EB games anyway) is due out 9/14/04
Some highlights

""Climb aboard authentic WWII jeeps, tanks and motorcycles, call in artillery strikes, and gain aerial support from fighter planes. With 14 new weapons at your disposal, you can cook off grenades, use a flamethrower or even bring out a deployable machine gun.""

""Go online for the ultimate battle between Axis and Allied powers, now including tank combat as well as tank-and-foot-soldier combined arms action. Experience 8 new multiplayer maps and 3 new modes -- including Tank Battle, Capture the Flag and Domination -- where squads must take control of key locations while preventing enemy troops from advancing. A new ranking system lets you earn additional weaponry upon completion of objectives, and gain the respect of friends and foes alike.""

Anyone picking this up?

Count me in.

Oh dear.

vir·u·lent adj.
1. Extremely infectious, malignant, or poisonous. Used of a disease or toxin.
2. Capable of causing disease by breaking down protective mechanisms of the host. Used of a pathogen.
3. Intensely irritating, obnoxious, or harsh.

I''m going to tell them you said that. And I imagine Elysium is probably saying ""perhaps ''vibrant''""?

No, looks like a ""virulent"" scene to me, in the first 2 senses of the definition.

Heh! Okay, I can see that now :). I wasn''t thinking outside the box enough.

HomeLan played a mulitplayer map of the new expansion and had this to say.

Over at QuakeCon this morning, Activision was showing off a new multiplayer mode for Call of Duty: United Offensive, the upcoming expansion pack to the hit Infinity Ward WWII shooter that''s being developed by Gray Matter Studios. (Sadly the single player mode for the game, which Activision showed at E3, was not brought to QuakeCon.) The mode is Domination and like the Unreal Tournament 2004 mode the objective is for one team to take control of all of the flag locations on the map before the other opposing team.

The mode, as one might expect, pits your US team against the Germany Nazis and the map we got to check out was a bombed out urban location with lots of multi-leveled buildings to get good sniper locations. Perhaps the most impressive thing in the map was the presence of player controled tanks that you and your opposing team can climb into and control. Of course, you are not completely protected in your tank as the maps has some handy Panzerfausts and the new heavy rocket launcher the Panzerschreck ready to take you out. The US forces get a new Bazooka rocket launcher as well for the expansion. The map also has the ability for you to call in an artilery strike at enemy locations via your binoculars as well as smoke grenades to hide your snipers (with some realistic looking graphics for the smoke effects).

Our brief gameplay look at United Offensive''s new
multiplayer mode shows that Gray Matter is serious about expanding on the original Call of Duty''s multiplayer features but we are not done yet. Tune in tomorrow when we get hands-on with the other map that they are showing at QuakeCon; a full-fledged tank battle level.

Ok, but this sounds much more like Battlefield: Vietnam, ET or JO than UT2k4. I don''t see why they compare it to UT, am I missing something?

I just got this game in the mail today ($4 on ebay). Color me excited.

$4, you got yourself a steal. The single player game alone is amazing.

I probably won''t reload mine til the expansion comes out - but the CoD forums are still loaded with people playing this, so you''ll have no problems finding great multiplayer games too.

I toyed around with playing multiplayer Call of Duty. All of the death match sites are bunny hopping kiddie nightmares if you ask me.

However I tried playing the servers marked ""realism"" and actually had a good time. In realism mode, your movement and shooting are hard coded to be mutually exclusive (you cannot fire guns until you hold still a second). If you''re like me and don''t want Rambo time, and instead want some actual team play and somewhat realistic play (people actually using cover, flanking on actual fronts, etc.) then I''d stick with realism servers, and skip the DM, TDM crud.

Lets get a game of ""Behind Enemy Lines"" going. Best mode ever for a LAN party.

This game is my favorite. I play it. Alot. I play on The Older Gamers servers if you want to look for them.

You need the patch up to 1.4. Definitely enjoy the SP game first.

Good map community also!

See you there!

Let''s see....I''ve got the patch, Heat of Batttle, and started hunting down maps (any Community Map Pack dealies?)....

I haven''t started playing the game yet, but will this week. I''ll look for you on Older Gamers.
