Spiderman's most recognizable Villain?

Certis and I just finished watching Spiderman 2, which we really enjoyed, and we started discussing the series and all the potential plotlines for the many movies to come. It seems we have differing opinions on which villains would attract the largest audiences however.

So without any hints as to who our choices would be I want to hear from you. I would like to hopefully prove a point to Certis and prove that once again I am right.

So here is the question I would like answered. Of all the villians in the Spiderman Universe who do you believe has the biggest name recognition, and thus attract the most people to see a Spiderman movie. So answer as if you barely knew anything about Spiderman and were asked to name a villian. Who would be the first one you would think of.

Remember I am not asking who you think your favorite is. So before you answer read the previous paragraph again and answer honestly. I am counting on you guys.

EDIT: For fairness sake I would say post your answer before you read any of the other responses so that you are not biased in any way.

I think the order of most recognizable to me would be:

1. Green Goblin
2. Doc Oc
3. Lizardman
4. Hobgoblin
5. Sandman
6. Kingpin

I stopped following Spiderman in the mid-late 80''s, so any of the new villans are unknown to me.

I''ve never been much of a comic book reader or followed Spiderman outside the films, so I''m going to mention the only one left - that hasn''t already been portrayed - that I''m really aware of:

Venom

To which I''ll add:

Mysterio
Kane

Seriously, other than Hobgoblin, I don''t really see how you could go wrong. You could even bring back the guy from Daredevil for Kingpin.

BTW, didn''t Spiderman and Sable tussle with Sabertooth? That would be a movie worth watching.

Not really. Spider-Man would own his ass.

Kane

I did not like the whole Clone Saga, but Kane was one of the best villans ever.

Green Goblin and Doc Oc are really the only villians that most people are familiar with and have been handled really well. That said, most people have probably seen a few of the old cartoons, which means we''re missing a few important ones:

Rhino
Vulture
Electro
Scorpion

Too bad none of these guys could really carry a movie on their own. They''re far too one-dimensional. For me, Venom is the only one left who could carry a movie alone. Maybe Carnage, but Vemon would have to come first anyway. Either that or some Sinister Six-type action, so long as it doesn''t turn out like any of the Batman ensembles. <shudder>

That would explain Kane. Never did follow that whole mess.

Kane was a badass villian. Hell, anyone who can kill Kraven The Hunter and Doc Ock (despite his ressurection later) rocks. Hell just the comic where Kane walks up to Dock Ock and Ock tells him Spider-Man and even Captain America have a hard time battling him Kane says simply ""I am Kane, you are dead."" and snaps his neck was just one of those ""Wow."" moments.

1) The Hobgoblin;
2) Carnage.

1) Doc Ock
2) Venom

and maybe Carnage. I thought Doc Ock was supposed to be his all time evil nemesis, and then Venom.

1)Mary Jane''s nips
2)Mary Jane''s nips
3)Mary Jane''s nips

No, The Green Goblin is his arch-nemisis.

I suppose Venom would be one of the wisest choices. but having introduced so many potential characters in this movie I am very interested to see where it goes. I think venom would likely draw the most viewers bar none. and just for the record Doc Ock is my fav supervillain so venom is just an unbiased opinion. I think also rhino, vulture, and kingpin and electro would work well in a story line but putting them in a movie may not draw the crowds like Venom or Carnage or Kane would draw. Anyways that of course is just my opinion. 8)

Venom.

1. Green Goblin
2. Doc Ock
3. Venom

Most people wanted the first movie to have Venom in it, so I am pretty sure that Venom would be the one.

Those are perks!

Yeah, you are probably right!

The more I think about Venom in the 3rd movie the more excited I get:

Venom

It will be The Green Goblin in Spider-Man 3.

It will be The Green Goblin in Spider-Man 3.

It should be both Venom and GG but oh well.

Venom is a whole seperate storyline. I''m not really sure how that would translate to the screen though.

Venom was the first to come to my mind... At least I think that was with Spidy

Wouldn''t be the first time that Spidey had to handle two villians.

If they use the Ultimate Spider-Man arc then it will. It would take two movies for it to be complete but it could happen.

I think Vencom and the Green Goblin are the villians most would know.

The Venom storyline would translate so perfect. If you remember the original storyline involving venom the suit inhabits spiderman first and works as a symbiotic unit that slowly warps Spidey and turns his feelings and actions somewhat evil. Remember Kraven returns (ala second very popular villain would have to be introduced) and spiderman nearly kills him cause the suit pushes him to. Then Doc Connors helps Spidey develop some sort of sonic Device to harm the suit and disconnect himself from it. ANyways that is how I remember it. This story would translate fantastic to the movie as you could easily make it all in one film or break it down into the Black symbiotic suit Spiderman Versus other supervillains, Rhino, Kraven etc. And then on the second film after seperating himself from the symbiotic suit in the first movie. introduce the symbiotic suit bonding itself with Eddy and Eddy''s famous dismissal from the daily bugle because of Peter Parker (sort of). I dont'' think anyone out there understands how great of a story this entails. and then after being Arch nemesis for a while they are forced to join forces and fight side by side to defeat the ultimate evil force CARNAGE. I mean this is gold and will translate so well to script and then to film. I can''t simply can''t see them not having this type of storyline added to this wonderful Film franchise. Does anyone agree with me?

Most of my Spiderman knowledge comes from comic books from the late ''70s through mid ''80s. The Green Goblin and Doc Ock seem like the only respectable villains. I''m not at all familiar with Venom or Kane, and so I''d have trouble getting extra excited about a movie in which they appeared.

Trust me all you would have to do is imagine Venom running around bounding from building top to building top looking like an evil demon laughing at spiderman with his evil symbiotic voice.....oh typing it is getting me excited just thinking about how amazing venom would look onscreen. he would be so damn scary, it would be awesome!!!!

Plus he could say ""We are Venom!""

""YEEEEESSSSSSSSSS WE ARE VENOM!!!!!!!""
ABsolutely PERFECT!!!!!

An adaptation of some kind of the Kraven the Hunter ""Kraven''s Last Hunt"" (if I remember the title correctly) would be pretty cool. It has been over a decade (maybe two) since I read that storyline in Spiderman, but I remember it as being a very cool story. It evolved Kraven from being a pretty minor villain (in my opinion) to a well developed one.
