Big Weekend For UT Mods

Boomtown's Hip

We've already mentioned two or three here on the boards. Quite simply, I can't keep up. That said, the NeoTokyo mod looks interesting, if only because I enjoyed Shirow's stuff.

I really want to try out FRAG.OPS

Thanks for the info.

I''m looking forward to Frag.Ops -- I''m hoping for a Raven Shield-like experience so I can play that style of game with all of my cheap-ass friends who won''t buy Raven Shield.

I love Alien Swarm -- it is hands down the most fun I''ve had with a mod in ages. Again, I''d love to get a good mp game going with some of the GWJ guys (I''m running it on my server if anyone is interested).

I barely touched Jailbreak, although it looks to be good fun.

This is what I love about the UT community -- just when I was getting tired of the original gameplay, a plethora of variety arrives. The flexibility of the engine in the hands of some creative and talented people certainly extends the value and life of the original title.

OK, I still want to believe the Star Wars universe is good even after Lucas messed it up. So....has anyone tried the new Troopersmod that came out yesterday??

Here''s a running post over on the atari forums with a list of all the mods. Probably nothing new, but good place to find all the links in one place.

UT Mod Linkage

I tried frag.ops last night and wasn''t initially impressed. It appears to be mission based (hitting the O button listed some missions, anways,) but on the server I was on last night everyone just ran around playing DM. It was turned based, so once you died you waited till the round was over to spawn again. I could switch to a knife, but couldn''t switch back to anything else once I selected knife.

Yeah, I mentioned it yesterday. Looking at the screens I figured it was all land battle, but I just read this on the front page:

This release features several new maps, revamped gametypes of CTF, TDM (which now have a choose loadout system), and OBJ (which is now on a class system) as well as many new weapons and the addition of the first two vehicles the X-wing and TIE fighter.

Take that Jump to Lightspeed!

Sweet. I have to try that TIE fighter!

You played CheckmatePropa?

Okay, that looks pretty cool. Nice concept. Thanks for the pointer.

Am I the only one who feel like a lot of these mods kinda suck?

I tried Troopers, and yet again, clunky feeling weapons, the vehicles... maybe I was doing it wrong, but I couldn''t fly that X-Wing for anything.

Jungle Warfare just felt like a crappy Counter-Strike knock off... basically a crappy copy of a crappy formula... yay?

I love Alien Swarm, but I need to find some good people to play online with cuz... single player is hellish. Still, very kewl concept and such.

Played Neo-Tokyo. The design and maps and such are all pretty kewl... but I can''t get bots to play? What the heck happened there? I want my single player while my computer is offline!

I think I''ve figured out what most of my problems are though...

A. Weapons... UT rules because there are weapons for EVERYONE. Rocketeers... Flak Monkeys... Snipers... Chaingunners... etc... When you make a mod like troopers with only shock rifle-esque weapons, you lose a good portion of the people playing. I mean, I''m pretty versatile in game, as most of you would agree too, whatever I''m holding, I''ll frag you with it *grins* But I don''t like being forced into anything either!

B. Weapon Effects - Oooh... look... my blaster bolt hit him... and he just absorbed it? Woo?

C. Controls... Why has my use key been changed? What if I don''t want to PEEK around a damn corner with my E key?

D. Control... OK, I realize an X-wing probably shouldn''t control like a Raptor... but at least make it usable without like an hour of testing via crashing into the Deathstar! I wanna play! Not practice!

E. Personality... None of these feel like they have any real personality to me! I mean, these maps made to look like old school video games and cartoons and such have more personality and feel more real than these mod maps. Why does this temple look like a library? Where''s the shrine? Why doesn''t this typical buddhist shrine not have the normal outer walls or the burial shine/stones? Why is there no tower (which would be badass to snipe from)?

Maybe I should go into some kind of Mod consulting?

Not yet, but I was wanting to check with you since you have played a few of these mods.

That is the beauty of mods -- they can suck and it is no skin off anyone''s back. Since they don''t have PR hype behind them, the sucky ones get let behind really quickly while the good ones can take off. Besides, they are free and plentiful, so I can''t find much to complain about.

Is everyone in agreement that Alien Swarm is the best mod so far? That is what everyone is telling me.

I agree with ya Demo, most of them are just lesser versions of done-to-death games - with new skins. The frag.ops looks like a counter strike rip-off. Troopers has potential, but like you said it''s really clunky and just UT2k with different skins. Neo is beautiful, but there''s not much of a game there, yet.

The two mods I really like are Alien Swarm and Red Orchestra, probably because they''re such different games than anything out there (that I''ve played, anyways.)

any of you tried red orchestra - really well done ww2 mod - slow moving but nice
