Dawn of War?

Has anyone else seen the new trailer for Dawn of War?

If so, do you know if that's actual in-game play, or just a scripted movie using the in-game engine? Either way, the game looks graphically pretty and true to the Warhammer 40K units they're representing, but if that's actualy gameplay footage this game could be amazing.

It looks like in-game play, and I agree it looks amazing. It''ll require a beefy system no doubt (<glares at Athlon 2500 as an inferior beast not worthy of mentioning>)

<looks at his 1.6Ghz P4 system and is deeply ashamed>

Its amazing how quickly things change and we spurn that which we once thought was blazingly fast and superior.

I''m on an Athlon XP 1700+ and I''m fine, though I never played FarCry. I''ll probably try to get an upgrade in time for HL2.

I''ve had a look at the DoW website. What concerns me is lack of screenies involving a UI. It''s not an FPS, so close-up graphics like that shouldn''t be what drives the gameplay.

I know, I hate it when game screenshots don''t show the UI. The UI is what I''ll be interacting with the most, and I want to see what the darn thing looks like. Besides which, if you have a UI in your screenshot I''m more inclined to believe it''s a real, in-game shot. Granted, it takes about 30 seconds to paste a UI onto a screenshot using photoshop, so maybe my belief is a little misguided :p

I believe that is actually in game footage too. I been really looking forward to this game. Might finally be a good pc game based on the 40K universe.

The downside is I will not be able to give my firend who works for GW a hard time about how sucky the game is.

I wouldn''t say there''s never been a good game based on the 40k license. I actually enjoyed Chaos Gate, and wish they would have made a sequel. It was a solid squad based tactical game with rpg elements, although it ran really really slowly on my machine.

I liked the Epic scale one based on the panzer general engine, though it was a little dull. Can''t remember what it was called, but it was nice to play as the Eldar for a change.

I sort of enjoyed Final Liberation, the truly Epic scale one. Tons of troops, and the only game I''m aware of so far that let you use the Titans. However, it was pretty buggy and the ruleset was infuriating. My Titans couldn''t kill enemy armor to save their lives, but Ork infantry would fire off their pop guns and rip my Titan a new one. Yay.

If I remember correctly, the two videos that came out after E3 (fan-site interviews and footage) did demonstrate some of the UI at least in passing. The video was unfortunately hard to watch due to the pinhead who was doing the interview and asking the questions. I seem to remember a few points where he pulled up the UI, but I honestly don''t remember any of the details about it. Nor a link.

I could be imagining the whole thing actually.

As for previous GW/WH games, I did sort of like Space Hulk. A few friends and I picked copies up out of the heavy discount bin at Staples ($7.99 if memory serves). As far as FPSs go for the time (this would be 97 or 98 I think), it was clunky and the controls weren''t the greatest, however I seem to remember the atmosphere was very good -- a very Warhammer-ish gothic feel.

Although I could be imagining that too.

Wow...Space Hulk. Hadn''t thought about that one in a LOOOONG time. I remember enjoying it, though I''m totally ignorant of the Warhammer universe...could be why I enjoyed it at the time.

Very good game X-Com style. I wished it was longer.

I think you mean Rites of War

Another great game once you got the hang of it.

My other favourites is of course both Space Hulk games though I prefer the Vengeance of the Blood Angels.

And finally the very first W40k pc game Space Crusade

Damn, I liked Space Crusade too! Maybe I need to check out this W40K thing after all!

Its a pity Relic arent pushing the boat out on this one and detaching the game from the standard RTS ruleset of Damage and hitpoints.
I''d have thought that the WH40k rules would lend themselves very well to the fast paced pure tactical experience they are trying to produce.
Instead of irritating little HP bars and instant hit weapons the WH40k sytem of To Hit, To Wound and Armour saves would be far more interesting gameplay wise and would allow a direct port of some units more interesting specials rules... monstrous creatures and invulnerability saves?
That being the only negative point, the game so far looks stunning and just like the table top version graphics wise.
Imagine what the modding community (one of relics strengths) will be able to produce.
The Armies so far are Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Eldar, Orks and unplayable Imperial Guard (my favs).

Well from space hulk on I was less than impressed. Lord know I played it a lot though.

Dawn of War though looks like it will please me though.

Where is the trailer available?

What''s this? An X-Com style game that I missed? Do tell more.

I also have followed this game a bit, both in print and on the web (when we can get it stable enough over here) and it looks great. I think Relic will do a great job and make it accessible for those like me who wouldnt know Warhammer from a Ball Peen Hammer to the expert table top jockey and artist that you have to be to play the tabletop game (I had a Chief who played and man that takes some work). I dont know the rules and I dont know the Universe all that well, but I have enjoyed the Relic games I have played. I remember Space Hulk and cursing trying to get it to run. Perhaps I should take the upgrade route as well. Hmmm... must find Alienware phone number... precious, my precious.... ""Well yes honey I was talking about you - the computer is just an inanimate office tool like these pencils here.""

Chaos Gate is a 2D isometric squad based turn based strategy game. Among the highlights:-

The Pros

1. True Line of Sight;
2. Elevation does make a difference in your strategy;
3. The availability of flying assault troopers, Rhino & Predator tanks, Techmarines and Techpriests;
4. Experience plays an important role;
5. Your troops are from the Ultramarine''s Space Marine Chapter;

The Cons

1. Very short campaign and simple storyline;
2. Very few and simple random encounters;
3. Limited graphic tiles and graphics are too plain and boring;
4. Buggy as hell;
5. Bad camera views.

Try it out if you can find it on Ebay you might like it.

Edit: Spelling errors

As the game will be dropping you in the middle of one of the most detailed sci-fi universes created with the likely aid of only a 2 page introduction in the manual, those new and interested might like to check This out for basic info.

Here for a Timeline of events

And here for more in depth fluff.

Relic have clearly done their homework as the game appears coherent with the background fluff. For those with some knowledge you may like to know what will be represented:

Space Marines- Blood Eagles, a new chapter by Relic.

Chaos Space Marines- Alpha Legion, one of the few chaos legions not based in the Eye of Terror.

Imperial Guard cameo- Cadians (the 8th?)

Eldar- Biel Tan Craftworld, most aggressive of them all.

Orks- Unknown, not exactly known for their organisation, better known for their ""Waaaaagh!!!!""

Relic indicate that the model skins and unit options maybe edited in game and will probably provide a few official skins for those wanting to play as Ulthwe or Ultramarines.
Knowing the obsessive fans this game if up to scratch will probably do well enough to warrant an expansion pack, if so I hope to the Emperor that they add the Imperial Guard proper, Tyranids and perhaps the Dark Eldar.

Melikes movies from this game lots and lots!

Thanks for the source material Ilium - that definitely helps add some flavor to those of us not overly familiar with the universe.
