Despite all the Jewel bashing, I''d still hit it.
Keph- I do not possess the book and thusly can produce no specific examples from it, but the next time I''m in a bookstore (undoubtedly the next couple of days) I''ll jot some down in my Palm.
In terms of less hideously rank poetry (assuming that my memory of her poetry is accurate), where to begin? How about Fredrico Garcia Lorca? Or Siegfried Sassoon?
Here''s a sample of Jewel''s lyrics, scraped off from under someone''s shoe by Google:
She''s an ugly girl, does it make you want to kill her?
She''s an ugly girl, do you want to kick in her face?
She''s an ugly girl, she doesn''t pose a threat.
She''s an ugly girl, does that make you feel safe?
Ugly girl, ugly girl, do you hate her
Cause she''s pieces of you?Wow. That''s intense.
Nope, not gonna argue that one. That''s probably the song I like the least from any of her albums (excluding the latest one). However, from ""Little Sister"" on the same album:
I wish I could save her from all their delusions
all the confusion
of a nation that starves for salvation
but clothing is the closest approximation
to God and He only knows that drugs
are all we know of love
""Painters,"" ""Adrian"" and ""Daddy"" are also pretty solidly-written tunes, though if you don''t like story songs there''s probably no point in me trying to convince you.
Or, from the book:
Forgetfulhe walks with a skin of stone
in effort to keep his blood
from dirtying the pavementhe closes his eyes
with deliberate determination
trying to rememberthe veins behind his eyes
lead like blue road maps
to the ocean of everyone else
I will admit to hunting a bit for that one, but more for illustative purposes than anything. Parts of the book are sketchy, but no moreso than most of the other chapbooks I''ve got.
Those really aren''t bad, Keph. I stand corrected.
I love it when pop stars TRAMP OUT. Sure ... get all in leather and bounce around.
But of course, as I look at her on the magazine covers with my wife standing next to me in drug store, I shake my head slowly in disgust.
""Look at her? Can you believe that? That''s despicable!""
*Looking at the picture of her, well, looking at her nearly exposed breasts* ""Yep. That''s awful, baby. Why do they do that to themselves? She seemed like such a nice girl.""
tsk tsk.

I was goign to throw in a Tom Jones reference as well, but he''s getting good reviews, so I''ll lay off.
I''ve got that Pat Boone album. It''s interesting.
