SWG: Stop me, oh, oh oh stop me.

As I type this, I am reinstalling (for the 3rd time), Star Wars Galaxies. The Jump to Lightspeed hype, combined with my failure to get into good MMO betas, combined with general malaise has led me to consider giving this another try just to see if anything has improved. This is all against my better judgement. Frankly, I can't even believe I'm typing this.

Can anyone give me a good reason why I should re-up for a month of SWG good(bad)ness? Am I just stupid?

Do you enjoy running around for a few hours each day to make stuff to pay for your harvesters to make money to buy upgrades for stuff you use to hunt for stuff to pay for your harvesters with?

Robear

Um, no.

*Looks at the floor*

So it hasn''t gotten better in a year?

It hasn''t gotten any better that and the movement is horrible in the game.

Let''s be succinct: If you get back into this game you are a fool.

I would love to be able to play the Space expansion..

But I know just being able to get enough credits to afford a spacecraft will probably involve hundreds of hours of mind numbningly dull actions...

so.......... natch!

I got a Louisville Slugger that can knock some sense into you.

You get a free spaceship with the expansion. You can use this spaceship to get credits to buy other spaceships. Unless it''s to trade items or group up with other players you never need to go to the ground game.

Than why build the expansion on top of an already game nobody likes? From what I''ve read, everybody in existence seems to hate SWG and the people that don''t probably haven''t played it enough to hate it yet.

Is it to try and generate interest in SWG? If so, I''ve got a way the developers can do that and not put resources in to an expansion. Make SWG not suck!

Yes of course it is! And also, SWG is up and running. Even if they borrowed all the tech from SWG you''d still have to get the servers up and running and stable plus new game = new launch = going through another new user registration influx fiasco.

Ill wait to see how it plays, but the fact that I dont have to do anything with the ground game tedium is a huge plus. I get the feeling that since this is tacked on and unrelated gaemplay to SWG, the gameplay will feel tacked on. I cross my fingers there arent 3 types of ship combat damage.

I would really like to see an all vehicle MMO. I know there is auto assault but I mean vehicles that arent cars. Im looking for a mech, hover craft, helicopter, ground effect craft, small submersible, flying aircraft carrier MMO.

Why in this age of BF1942 and Tribes, can we not have a Privateer style game where you land on an asteroid, leave your ship, search the surface for lucrative minerals, whip out your drill and mine the loot, carry it back to your ship, fly through the jumpgates for the planet with the best price? Everyone gets the spaceship part right but mining = shooting a rock instead of an enemy ship.

I think both EvE Online and Jumpgate let you do this.

No clue about JG, but in EVE you certainly cannot land on some planet or asteroid and leave the ship. Also, the mining process is incredibly boring.

Whoops, I misinterpreted fang''s remarks. I thought you wanted a game where you shoot an asteroid instead of an enemy ship. My bad.

Judging from everyone''s responses, I guess I''ll send $14.95 to the first guy who volunteers to come beat me in the nuts. It sounds like more fun than SWG.

Yes, I meant leave your ship. X2 had the start of this in that you could get out of your ship and jetpack over to another, climb in and fly it. Dont know why they didnt go all the way...

Id also like to see a capital ship game that you had to board and shoot your way to the cockpit (FPS style) to take it over.

Good too know there are some Smith fans out there =)

Seriously I have no clue why they''re doing it this way. They''d probably get more people to pay for it by making it a seperate MMO with $15 on it''s own. Then you''d have tons of hopeless SW fanboys paying $30 instead of $15.

I haven''t played SWG yet but JtL sounds really good. But I don''t want to play SWG, dumb move on there part.

I''m pretty sure I''ve heard this one before.

I have a 60 day subscription card that I''m hanging onto for JtL. Otherwise E-bay would have ate it by now.

Thats most odd...not that I''m complaining but I''m curious to why they chose that route..

Almost as if they acknowledge that the first portion of the game will never appeal to a certain tyoe of gamer.

Seems like what someone should build is a good, generic, MMO server and a separate, good, plugin-using MMO client that translates the generic server items/mobs/PCs/NPCs into the specific plugin that the client is running.

So, you have the game server sending the same generic text/descriptions to various people, each of whom is running a client with a different translator plugin, so the tank is playing high-fantasy, the rogue is playing steampunk, and the healer is playing sci-fi.

They''re in the same place, in the same group, but the entire game is ""skinned"" to give them what they want and ""translated"" on the fly by the client/plugin. You could even do this with vehicular games.

All the MMOGs are essentially the same, just with different terms for the same things.

Oh..Pick me!

I''ll do it for free!

Did you start playing hubbinsd? I will PM all the ways the game has improved if you want?

No I haven''t started playing. I got into a certain MMO beta that has been taking up my time (not WoW, so cancel the hit men). Are you playing Flux?

You got a PM hubbinsd.

Please post all the things you think are better in this game Flux!

I was a fool and stuck with it for... oh, 6 months. I quit playing in January after I unlocked my FS slot.

Knowing that I put so much time into it and hearing all the hype about JTLS, I have kept my accounts. Every month or so I log in and make sure that all my houses/factories/shops and so on are still there... I run around for about 10 minutes, get bored and log out again.

Check this out:
I have a Master Armorsmith / Master Doctor on my first account.
I have a Master Fencer / Master Smuggler / Pistoleer on my alt account.
I have a 4222 Jedi apprentice on my alt account.
All on the same server...

Well over 15 million in the bank... lots of goodies, a house for show (aquarium, kryat skulls... you name it), a hospital for my armorsmith/smuggler/doctor shop... factories up the wazoo and 4 medium naboo houses with nothing but 100k crates of steel/ore/blah blah blah...

AND I''M BORED HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

/cry

Man, were I in your shoes, I''d have to ask myself if that is really worth, what, $10/month? To store non-portable data? That I don''t want to play with?

If Sony is doing SWG anything like EQ, why not cancel the account, then in a few months they''ll send you the ""But we''re not like that anymore, we promise! We even saved all your stuff for you"" email tempting/taunting you to come home. Sure, maybe they won''t. Personally, I don''t have the disposable income to spend on character storage, so my opinion is biased. Sure seems a waste of $10/month, though, unless you''re speculating on the market hoping to score on eBay.

Just my opinion, that''s all.

No clue why I''m holding onto them... well $20/month doesnt really effect me and Sony''s account policy with SWG is flaky at best.

They say the will keep the account records for 3 months (or as long as they dont need the DB space) but I have first hand knowledge of an RL friend of mine that quit in November and tried to get his account back in early January... it had been deleted

With the amount of time I put into it, if JTLS rocks I will be happy... if it doesn''t... then ebay here I come.
