Microsoft directing gaming resources towards the PC

MS Focus

Interesting.

Great link, Flux. I was wondering when MS was going to realize that it''s losing a tremendous amount of money on the XBox and start working to cut its losses. No slight on the XBox as a console, mind you - it''s just a loss leader for MS at this point, and their duty to shareholders ensures that they don''t do things that lose money in the long run.

The way they build, market, and sell the XBox 2 console will likely be quite different than the Xbox in order to prevent $ loss on each unit sold, and they''ll probably continue to support the current XBox for a long, long time to eventually recoup their investment via game sales.

I''m not really sure that I agree with the premise that Microsoft is a victim of the XBox''s success. It may be that there were some unintended consequences to the XBox. I had always assumed it was part of their plan for a games only platform, and little or no gaming on their PC OS.

One good point that is made is the importance of gaming to Microsoft''s future. I think that PC gamers are the unsung heroes who keep Windows selling. They know Windows, and because of this, they support the PC''s of less tech savvy friends and family, who might otherwise use other operating systems.

I don''t really like the autopatching for games thing. Sometimes I don''t want to patch my games.

Bout damn time!
