Beyond Divinity?

Anyone?

Bueller?

Fry?

Came out today. I just got the call from my local EB.

Loved the first one, hated the demo. I know they''d made changes based on demo feedback (like re-doing all the voice acting), but it''s still gonna probably have to hit bargain bin status before I''m willing to give it a look.

I''m a little tapped after coming back from SB, so it will be next paycheck for this one. Definitely picking it up, though.

I''ll be picking up my preorder later today (assuming my EB calls to tell me its in) but it may be awhile before I load it up since I''m trying to finish up Sacred first.

I thought sacred was like D2-you never really finish it.

For those of you playing the English language version of the game, there is a patch available that fixes quite a few things and brings the game up to the same level as the German version.

I finished D2. Twice.

Oh, sure, throw that in my face.....

I always get to the end of the third act and go, let''s make a new character....and then go play that for a while.

Can''t say the game doesn''t have replay value for me

I put a bit of time into it yesterday and I like it quite a bit so far. I''ve got a ways to go before I can offer any solid impressions but if you liked Divine Divinity then I don''t think you can go wrong with this one. The Death Knight''s voice is changed and it IS better although not perfect. It''s growing on me a bit as I go forward though.

I bought it today. I''m going to try to play Divine Divinity first (which came bundled with it), as I missed it the first go round.

Maybe it''s the character choice I made, but the Shadow Knight is a Warrior and my avatar is a wizard-type and there are some really tough enemies right from the get-go. You need to really gulp down the potions sometimes and you''ll die a fair bit.

Also, performance is kind of iffy. I''ve got a pretty damn good system and the first area just kills my frame-rate and afterwords it really improves but it''s not as smooth as I''d like with occasional stutters while scrolling and the in-game mini cut scenes. Maybe that''s just me though.

Even though this is a ridiculous question for me personally to be asking, is it multiplayer?

No sir!

Ok, I was having fun in my first hour of play. I was liking the improvements and some of the awkward things that carried over from DD werent bothering me too much. It was starting to seem like a more involved Dungeon Siege when *BAM* dead, game over press escape to continue.

WTF is that? I kill the torturer guy but his corpse falls behind a basket of severed heads so I spend 15 minutes running around the level looking for that hidden switch. (bitterly reminising the old Kings quest days) Then, aha, I found the elusive key tucked behind the basket that allows me to continue. No biggie but it sets the stage for 30 seconds later. So Im in the new room passed the locked door and I read a note giving me the combination for the levers in order to open the secret door. Wallah! The door opens. So running out of the room and planting foot firmly on the door frame of the secret door, and cue red flame effect that lasts for half a second followed by hp jumping from full to 0. Then the tastefull message, ""Game Over press Esc to Continue."" Well pressing escape brings you to the save/load/new game menu. Theres no auto save. There''s no respawn back at the starting position. I must say that the fact that my game can end in half a second in the first 30 minutes of the plot doesnt give me warm fuzzies about the design direction.

I saw mention in the manual of battlefield areas that you can unlock. These areas are random generated areas and dungeons that allow you to level up you character outside of the main plot. (yes you can save progress and reinsert your character into the story campaign with all equiptment intact) Well, I hope there is a cheat code to unlock them all from the start cuz I sure as hell dont want to play through the campaign mode knowing that Im going to have 20 savegames that I rotate and use every 5 minutes.

I like the freedom they allow in the character development process. However, it seems a little unnecessarily complex. (i.e. to get to the skill you want to improve you navigate a menu 4 tiers deep)

Reading the manual, I found a lot of really neat skills are available. (especially the survivor traps) Yet, of course none of these are accessible from the start. I hope that I dont have to find a specific trainer that is the only one who can teach me these skills. (there are npcs you run across that are part of the plot but can also train you specific skills if you ask them the right way).

I really dont like having 80% of the skill tree hidden from me. If they are going for trying to lessen players feeling like they gimped their character, hiding the skill tree is not the way to do it.

I''ve finally gotten around to playing this, and Holy Hoppin'' Hippos Batman! the Death Knight voice acting is horrific. I don''t think I''ve ever heard voice acting so bad (and I''ve heard some really bad ones) that it was practically a game killer. I have to turn the sound off just to make it tolerable. And allegedly this is the ""new and improved"" voice. I can''t even imagine what the original must have been like.

I''m still attempting to escape the prison at the beginning of the game, but I''m disappointed in what they''ve done with it (for all the reasons fangblackbone mentions above). So far, it''s not nearly as good as Divine Divinity was.

The voice acting in the demo was ABYSMAL. It fills me with chagrin to learn that the ''new and improved'' voice isn''t much better.

I''m annoyed though... I moved right after buying this game. The necessary CD key to make it go is missing. This makes me a sad panda.

Oh well, I guess I''ll just have to play WoW instead.

Loved Divine Divinity. Never ended up playing this for more than a couple of hours. I kinda set it aside for when I got bored and hard up for an RPG ... and there it sits.

That''s what I thought too, but you don''t need a CD key. After I installed the game, I put disk 1 back in to start it up and it asked for a CD key. I looked everywhere, flipped through the manual, tore the box apart, looked at both CDs front and back. Nothing. I was mystified. Even the manual didn''t mention a CD key in the install instructions. Then I popped out the first disk and put the second one in and, voila!, it went through the CD check and started the game right up. No CD key needed.

So try starting the game with Disk 2. It''s the play disk, it just isn''t labeled as such.

Edit to add: And don''t forget to download and install the patch, the most current one is 1.45 or 1.46, something like that.

Man. Don''t I feel dumb now.
Thanks for the tip!

So would y''all say that it''s not as good as Divine Divinity? I never played either, but haven''t heard many positive things about Beyond Divinity and wonder if the previous iteration would be worth picking up.

When I bought my copy of BD - sitting on the shelf waiting for me to get revved up enough to deal with incredibly difficult fights in the start - it included a copy of DD, free, inside the box.

Yep, my copy of Divine Divinity included the original as well.
