SWG: Jump to Lightspeed Q&A

From IGNPC

This looks like that X-Wing sequel we've all wanted, but the drawback is is that you're forced to use Star Wars Galaxies to play it. I want a standalone, dammit!

I''m still skeptical. How the heck are they going to incorporate various skills into a twitch-based flight sim? And can you start right off with a spacecraft, or do you have to ""work"" for it?

Having a tighter aiming reticle for a space gunner proficiency would be one way off the top of my head.

IGNPC: How do ships fit in to the game''s current crafting system? Can players build their own ships? What sorts of customizations are possible?

Haden Blackman: As with weapons, armor, speeder bikes, and virtually everything else in the game, starships will be built by players for other players. Players will be able to customize both the ship''s outward appearance and its functionality. In some cases, a modification will do both: strapping on a new pair of engines to your X-wing might enhance its top speed and also change the look of the craft.

Do you have to level up to max in random classes to get a bunch of cool parts for your spaceship, and then it will randomly construct itself after you kill about 10000000 mobs?

I love the part about the ship being stored on your datapad...Talk about reducing everything in the ""game"" to a statistical abstraction.

Sure, maybe that''d work in a Jetsons MMORPG, but this is Star Wars. NO FOLDING STARSHIPS!

Edit: After looking at the screenshots, I can only think of how much I hate LEC for sticking this to SWG. I guess this means we''ll never see another X-Wing...

OOOH OOOH You still get to go the cantina and watch people dance.....

next.

I would be vaguely interested in this...

But then I''m sure I''d find out that it take 100000000 credits or something and a year of solid playing to even be able to afford a ship...and then the repair costs are astronomical..

Still...I''m impressed that they''ve even figured out a way to get it all to work... (so far)

Craft are stored on a player''s datapad, similar to the storage of vehicles in the base game.

Way to up the realism, guys! Remember that time in ""Star Wars"" that Han Solo whipped out his datapad to create the Millenium Falcon? That was AWESOME!

Players will need to return to planets often for ship maintenance and customization, to heal battle fatigue and to sell their loot from space.

Yes, be sure to incorporate the part of the game that has driven many players from it (i.e. forcing players to hang around in cantinas) into the cool new stuff. That''ll draw them back into the fold!

I just want to fly around in outer space, in my A-wing, killing various and sundry types of TIE Fighters piloted by real people.
I don''t give a crap about looting, customizing, watching stupid dancers, or interacting with people (other than the killing them part.)

Having a tighter aiming reticle for a space gunner proficiency would be one way off the top of my head.

And imagine if you had a higher charisma! Your character could automatically taunt people with phrases like, ''Now this is pod racing!''

Yeah, never understood the fascination there.

""Lets play a game where one of the features is you can go to a bar, and watch people dance.""

A word of advice to anyone that still gets off on this s**t-Do yourself a favor, slick-turn off the computer, and go to a real bar and watch people dance, or better yet, join in.

That goes double for all you SIMS monkeys.

That would make a great sig there reap, mind if I take it?

Becoming a jedi revolves around pretty cool quests now, no more random class leveling, just fyi.

Here''s an idea: If there is a demand for an online Star Wars flight combat sim, why don''t they just make one? Why tie it to SWG? Is this some sort of strange game within a game concept that we can expect more in the future? It just seems like this isn''t going to have the kind of focus that a stand alone flight combat game would have (as others here have already stated).

Which planet in SWG do I land my X-Wing on to play Sam & Max 2?

My first thought is that SWG isn''t doing as well as they would have hoped. Unfortunately, they are making something I would play, but are tying it in to all the reasons I don''t play SWG.

No problem. I don''t mind at all...

BECAUSE BY USING MY NAME, YOU''VE ALREADY SOLD YOUR SOUL! TO ME! HAHAHA!

Well, all I an say is I''m a space sim nut. Tie Fighter is one of my favorite games. However, I don''t give a damn about this.

Yes, but how long did it take them to fix it - and do you really trust these guys to not pull the same crap again?

Trailer and screenshots here.

Have I mentioned that I hate LucasArts?

They''re adding it because it was supposed to be in the game from the beginning. I think they probably feel they have to add it. I mean, what is star wars without space travel. Whether they''ve actually found a way to add it in a way that will work, finally, is another thing. They''ll add it, come hell or high water, even if they know it''s not really a good addition. The pressure is too great. I don''t see how they can incorporate it, without it just being a seperate part of the game.

I would love to know what their subscription numbers are, and were since the beginning. I hear people leaving the game a lot, but are they really struggling.

Luckily I am not in a position to trust them, since I don''t even play the game.

I worked my butt off to get Jedi... I played him maybe a total of 15 hours because the JEDI class encorporates every crappy MMO design every developed.

JEDI suck unless they are higher level (stands to reason). To reach a level where you dont die to the majority of the *easier mobs, you have to kill about as many ""things"" as it would take to master every single combat class in the game. To get to a level where you can defend yourself from people hunting you, well you have to master every class 2-3 times and get yourself a lvl 60 monk in EQ while your at it.

There is nothing to do as jedi except to grind levels because if you RP your jedi, you will be hounded by every BH in the game (because they can) and you cannot defend yourself unless your higher level :P. And of course, any overt Imperial can kill you if you make a simple mistake because all Jedi start a Rebel.. even if your main is imperial (go figure).

Oh yea, and if you die enough times (their algorithm for losing xp is as complicated as deliberatly landing a rover in a crater on mars) the xp loss is the same as going from lvl 60 to lvl 55 in EQ... just the first xp death mind you.

Its boring as hell FarCry is damn fun!

When a whole bunch of cynical and jaded bastards around here start posting how much fun it is and how it makes SWG worth returning to despite all it''s utter suckyness (well the music was good), then I might mange a little interest. Franky I wouldn''t trust the SWG dev team to take a crap in the woods, they don''t seem to remotely grasp what makes a game fun.

Franky I wouldn''t trust the SWG dev team to take a crap in the woods,

Now, that''s hardly fair. Of course, it would take three days and they''d have to examine every tree in the forest...

Yes, but instead of taking the crap, they instead take a piss and promise that the crap will be coming in a year or so.

I just bought the game tonight and will be making a Bounty Hunter and will be buying a ship when the expansion comes out. If anyone wants to get a group going I still haven''t picked a shard.

Bounty hunters? We don''t need their scum.

So is being Jedi going to be able to give you better flying skills?

I though I read somewhere that they were going to give everyone a FS now?

Thank you Admiral Piett.

I hope so!
