Battlefield Deux revealed...

From Computer Gaming World

That's a tentative title, of course. The game isn't a direct follow-up to Battlefield 1942 or Battlefield: Vietnam. Instead, it jumps forward to the world of modern warfare. The sequel will feature the latest in modern small arms, heavy weapons, and fighting vehicles -- M-4 carbines with IR scopes; M-60 machineguns with steadying bipods; M-1 tanks with reactive countermeasures; and of course, much more.

Man, if you hated M-60s before...

But will it have a radio? That's what I want to know. MP games seem kind of boring without one.

Whos fighting who? There doesn''t seem to be any mention of that.

And here I thought this was going to be about the latest direction of the Deus Ex brand.

...M-1 tanks with reactive countermeasures...

?

Like bolt-on reactive armor which the M-1 doesn''t have?

EVIL EA PRESIDENT: REALISM DOES NOT CONCERN ME, DEVELOPER!

hey, reactive countermeasures - could be a bolt-on CIWS for all we know

Realism has never been a hallmark of the Battlefield games....

Shhhhh! It''s that budget increase that Congress was going to surprise you with on your birthday!

There''s a bolt-on Missile Countermeasures Device (MCD) available for the M1 Abrams and the M2 Bradley. It is designed to screw up the guidance systems of incoming anti-tank guided missiles by generating infrared and radio interference. It has to be pointed in the general direction of the incoming missile, so it could be an interesting gameplay mechanism. The Russians have a similar system, the Shtora-1. There''s a paragraph describing it in that link.

Yeah, there''s also an air conditioner available. I have yet to see those get installed! I would argue we need those more than some damn missile jammer.

Supposedly there is also a TOW varient of the M1. Why you would want to mount one is beyond me. Still, I always thought it would make a cool game addition.

I think the game modernized would be fun.

If they follow the BF:V model, what do you suppose they''d put in the radio. What sort of tracks exemplify the modern era (Gulf War to today)?

Matchbox 20!!!!!!

It would help to think how it would sound while you''re tearing up an enemy CP with an Apache. Somehow, I don''t think ""Unwell"" would work in that situation.

Bright Lights maybe?

Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Clearly. What could be better than music made to be a soundtrack to the end of the world?

It came out in 1988, but I would need to have Bobby McFerrin''s ""Don''t Worry, Be Happy."" Nothing could better accompany a laser guided bomb.

I''d like to see it set in the 80s vs the old ""Evil Empire"" itself. Anyone remember wasting many hours on the SSI classic Mech Brigade?

Man, thats a CD I listen to infrequently.

Don''t worry, EA''s got plans to provoke^H^H^Hfind a suitable opposing force..
Remember, you heard it here first.

Setting: some banana republic, in the near future...

lacky: Generalissimo, the evil americans (see == EA) have not released a special edition DVD here. They said your incompetence and our lack of electricity limited market penetration.

dictator: order the attack

Here''s a press release, but it is in Swedish.

I guess we''ll be getting the English version later today.

Reserving judgement until I seemore details, but...

unless they have some ideas for bringing new gameplay elements & styles, anything DICE does in the BF realm will alway seem bland compared to the initial thrill of BF1942. I love BF:V, but I think their first success has sort of hamstrung them.
