Lineage II Beta. My One Hour Experience

*sigh*

I spent the majority of my evening last night downloading the beta version for Lineage II. Today, after my little monster finally konked out, I decided to create a character and give the world the once over.

*clears throat*
Dark Elf - Female (because I am one and I only play girls.. it would be creepy otherwise). I enjoyed the breeze against my body. *cringe* Seems dark elven females are partial to Thongs, size dental floss, and all have the breastage anatomy of Pamela Anderson. Played for 5 minutes and couldn't handle the way she ran.. and I felt like I was in my own pron movie wondering when Tommy Lee was going to come stick it to me under a bush. bleh....

After that experience, I tried my luck as a human. They look a bit more ... respectable. I have no idea where I was in the world but it was a town..

I leave said town - about 10 feet from the gate. *Dead* I didn't even realize I had been PK'd - but I saw someone in the chat dissing me (wee.. he killed level 1 mage.. what a feat!) Eh.. no matter I think it's just a little punk on a sick day at the computer. I hit the "return to city" button and head out again - this time out of a different gate .. I think I did anyway.

I'm enjoying killing a wolf/racoon thing and *dead again*. Only this time I see my attacker giggling or some crazy sh*t over my body. Hmm.

Needless to say, my remaining time was spent in the same fashion. I couldn't even concentrate on figuring out my surroundings, game mechanics.. etc. because I was too busy staying away from everyone else when I wasn't taking a dirtnap to pk's every 10 minutes.

I made it to level three - I think. I bit it at least five more times to pk's. I even stood next to a guard the last time I was murdered and he just stood there. *laughs*

Thank Cernunnos I didn't PAY for this. I can understand player killing to a point.. but what I just had to go through made me sad.

Off to delete teh suck of a game and find some chocolate I guess. *meep :(*

How I loathe the PVP experience in MMORPG''s. I''ve never once felt like I was having fun in those situations. Thanks for the warning Shelly!

Or should I just call you mom? Mommy?

Hey Shelly, thatnks for the head''s up. This is one that I was actually interested in, but now?

I can get this same experience any time I like on Battlenet, for free.

I''m curious as to what server you were on. I gave this game a try (didn''t care for it either) but I was only actually PK''d about once in several hours of play. I had a lot more trouble with kill stealing.

I''m just wondering if the servers in general have gotten worse, or there are particular servers that are especially bad. Considering I haven''t been back to the game in something like 2 weeks I suppose it doesn''t really matter.

I played on the Erica server since it was the next in line as far as least congested.

I beta''d UO, AO and DAoC.. none of them were remotely similar to this experience - as far as behavior is concerned. Shelly had her shock and awe for the day, thank you.

Certis: You can call me whatever you want, just keep your fingers out of my face.. I tend to bite.. hard. *foams at the mouth a little*

*desperately seeking rpg enjoyment until WoW*

This is exactly why I stopped playing the beat of Lineage and have now moved on to CoH, which is, imho a fantastic game.

Yeah, if you''re seeking an RPG to hold you over until WoW you might want to give City of Heroes a try. You certainly won''t have to worry about getting PK''d. You could also make a character that looks pretty close to your GWJ avatar if you like

I took someone suggestion and signed onto the Lionna server. I was really surprised that I never ran into any PK''s or people being PKed. I played a human, orc, high elf and that adorable dwarf female. I got em all up to level 5 when Paladin released his impressions of CoH.

Im sorry you had to experience that Shelly. Ask Elysium, that kind of PvP makes my skin crawl in a near Hulk style rage.

Move on over to CoH. Its pretty neat and the character customization puts Lineage 2 to shame. (see the CoH character description thread for screens)

First time posting here, I''m a pathological lurker...

Sorry you had the crappy experience, but actually the penalties for going PK in this game are pretty harsh.

Quick Summary for those who don''t know and care: Player names have a color. White = Normal NonCombative Purple = In the middle of a fight with another player. Red = PK scumbag. If your name is white and attack another white or purple named player player you will turn purple and stay that way till the fight is over or a time limit is up (40 sec I think.) If you attack a white player, kill them and they don''t defend themselves your karma will go up and you will turn red. These are the PKs. Anyone can attack the reds and suffer no penalty. The more white players a red kills the worse their karma gets and the longer it takes to ""work off.""
There are some additional penalties for being red, first is that everyone hunts them and second and worse is that if they are above level 4 they have a MUCH increased chance to drop an item they are carying. And O MAN, will they Female Doggo when they do drop that ubersword of pking!

Right now on the game''s open beta is winding down and some of the borderline psychopaths that are not going to play the game in retail are going PK. Thus, the scumbag PK population has increased tenfold. This is especially true in the newbie zones, as the prey there is the easiest to kill. (On a side note: I actually like this as I HATE PKs and hunt them without mercy.) Most of the time you should not try to fight back if your have not been one-shotted. Just run away to one of the bloody faries or one of those giant tree things. Those are the real game guards against the PKs, I don''t know if the town guards do anyting. (Never seen a PK get close to town before someone kills them ) If you need help with PKs just yell in town that there''s a PK outside and some of the more vigilante minded players will usually go out and kill them for you. I even give any item drops to the person that alerted me to their presence.

If you want to give it another go, I play on lionna. When I get tired of leveling I patrol the dark elf newbie area, disguised as a newb myself (I''m level 16, PKs are usually around level 4-10, easy pickens)

Well crap, that was supposed to be a quick summary...

I played on Liona too for a bit... never got PK''d. Not that it made the game better or more enjoyable. Pretty much pointless whack-a-mole with no end in sight.

Pretty much pointless whack-a-mole with no end in sight.

Hehe that should read...

A pretty, pointless whack a mole with no end in sight.

The game sucks. It has the worst grind of any MMORPGS, the death experience lost is too much and the PVP is very grief freindly.

The game is nothing but a grind with a horrible UI.

Lin2 is just not a very intresting game anyway just keepin moving and don''t make eye contact :). I recomend you go check out COH, seems to be the best MMP''s in the imediate future (WOW might be good, not in the beta yet so I can''t comment).

What you said makes sense lemmywinks. With beta winding down plenty of people who don''t plan to stick around and play would go PK crazy. They''ve got nothing to lose and can ""enjoy"" being a total pain in the ass. Makes me glad I tried it out when I did, and not now.

I''m re-downlaoding the beta right now. what server do you guys play on?

The reason I do not like CoH is that it isn''t a super hero game. It is a MMORPG with colourful clothing. If it was a super hero game everyone wouldn''t be one and there would be super villains.

It might have gotten better since I last played it months ago.

It is a MMORPG with colourful clothing.

You are obviously set in your ways about this game. Not sure why youd give it another go.

What you said is like saying EQ or Daoc isnt fantasy. They are just blue skinned men and women with pointy ears, robes and staves.

Because I like MMORPGs and I give every game a chance the last week of a beta.

What you said is like saying EQ or Daoc isnt fantasy. They are just blue skinned men and women with pointy ears, robes and staves.

Well that''s true about EQ (never played DAOC). It takes more than deformed ears and walking sticks to make a fantasy game. There is very little roleplaying, which is probably just as well since I know of several people who were warned for being ""offensive"" by role playing.

I see what he is saying about the power sets seeming more like fantasy MMOG''s than real superhero type abilities. Maybe I just never got into the lesser known comic book characters who could just do one thing.

This is exactly why I play JG. While there is PVP in the game, you don''t have to engage in it to enjoy it. Why, in my 4 years with the game, I''ve never PVP''d, mostly mined and hauled cargo.

Yep I agree.

I played it for 2 weeks, after killing hundres and hundreds of things to level, I just did not see anything good in sight.

It did not help that some middle schooler was running around, shooting arrows at me, just to see it sticking to my butt...

I wholeheartedly disagree with Ulairi''s premise. I was concerned as hell abut the idea of ""classes"" in a superhero game, especially after the open-ended nature of Freedom Force. But COH has done it well.

Yes there are ""classes"", the archtypes (AT) - but within each AT there are approximately 30 unique combinations of basic power mixes. Each AT has 5-6 choices for primary power set and 5-6 for secondary power set.

So that''s 150 variations of basic hero, and each of those variations has more powers to choose from than they have slots for powers. Add in another 30 or so ""pool"" powers which anyone can choose, and you have pretty much any super hero you like able to be created.

Here was my test to see whether this was a superhero game, or just druids and paladins in costumes - create the X-Men.

Colossus? Make a super strength/invulnerabity tanker.

Wolverine? Claws/regeneration scrapper with the Fighting power pool set.

Storm? Storm summoning/Lightning Defender with flight.

Nightcrawler? Martial Arts/Super reflexes scrapper with teleportation.

Jean Grey? Kinetics/Psychic Defender.

Is it still an MMORPG? Sure. You have buffs and heals, spawns and XP penalties for dying. But is it a ""true"" superhero game? You betcha. As much as Freedom Force was - just in a difference genre. This game is to Freedom Force what EQ is to Baldur''s Gate - not a statement of the relative quality of any of the games, just a comparison of the nature of the types.

As far as the feel of the game, it definitely has captured the comic book and super hero feel.

In one mission you fly (perhaps literally) through an office building blasting bad guys and frantically trying to save hostages and defuse bombs on a time limit.

Fight in groups, and you face off against 3-5 gang members or cultists or robots (etc) each. Some of your group will be flying, others running at super speed, still others teleporting around. Fists and power bolts are flying, as are the bad guys - knockback and knockdown are common to many attacks.

There are even super powered enemies - bosses and archvillians with similar powers to the heroes''.

Ulairi - you''re just jaded and cynical. You''ve been in the MMOG field so long, you''re seeing nothing but code, like Neo at the end of the Matrix. Here, take this blue pill and enjoy a little super hero throw down with the rest of us.

Nice post Ral, I fully agree!

What about Batman? Is there a crazy-loner-with-gadgets-and-martial-arts-skills set?

What about Batman? Is there a crazy-loner-with-gadgets-and-martial-arts-skills set?

I know you were being facetious but yes of course you could make batman or dark night bat mant or knight quest batman.

The city you run around in feels like the backdrop of the old spiderman cartoon.

I was very tempted to buy lineage 2, until the college lag began to affect. It didn''t start until I''d been playing the beta for a week.

All in all, it was a very positive experience. I started as a dwarf, and I feel that that is the reason I enjoyed it. Dwarf start area is much less crowded. I''m not amazed by their current level of support(yes, I know, only beta), so I''m glad that I encounted the game killing lag, preventing me from buying.

On to City of Heroes right now. Watch out for ""Sir Tramell"" on Pinnacle.
