your occupation?

Dev, C++/GTKMM. I just thank God I found a dev job that wasn''t VB.

There''s nothing wrong with VB.

Well once you have your degree and you look back at all those years you studied (pun intended) you''ll probably be saying the same thing.

:)

Aaah, now he''s just making stuff up. You just finished watching Star Trek didn''t you?

Well I only specified ""in Europe"" cos I thought that jobs were scarce over there in A-MER-A-KAH and the last thing most firms would need is another spud eating, stout drinking, Paddy O''Coder.

Just depends on what you wanna do. For me getting a job should be a cinch since I''m a male going into a predominate female oriented position (child education).

Lots of programmers in the house I see. It''s just a matter of your programming preference. I feel that programming in VB slows me down since the language is more verbose than C#. C# code just looks cleaner to me.

Unversity of South Carolina? That''s about all I know. You got some real fine schools to the north of you, but I don''t know how much of a hike they are.

I''m going to Suffolk Law this year (hopefully, the apllication is before the admissions board as we speak) so I''ll let you know what you are in for.

Yep, I went there.

Uh, Mateo, I don''t think University of South Carolina is in Southern California.

I''d still like to hear about your law school adventures, though. I haven''t taken the LSATs yet because I''ve still got a little bit to do before I can finally wrap up my bachelor''s.

And remember to get a big gun, if you plan on becoming a lawyer, for the day the revolution comes ;).

I''ll just get a nice cushion for when my back is up against the wall.

that and a .45. Trust me, I know you want it!

No, Sanj, say it ain''t so!

Not the blackest of arts!

Sure not blacker than say... necromancy. Or plastic surgery! It''s either that or history teacher, and I''d like to be able afford a house in California someday

Stay away from personal injury and criminal defense and I''ll still play with ya!

I''d love to teach history.

But I''ve decided to bail from Grad school after this semester.

I promised myself that if the quality of life index tanked I would, and I just can''t stand the silly-assedness of my classes and my fellow students constantly trying to impress the rest of the class.

Dude, didn''t you hear, to pass the bar you have to summon either a high ranking demon, or Dick Cheney, your choice.

Ohh man, I''m going to get killed for that.

By the way, a question for Canadians out there:

I have 8 years of experience as IT Helpdesk (direct support, hardware repairs, telephony) and should get my Associate degree (2 years school is Associate degree, right?) in Management of Information Systems by february next year. Since I have decided to try to resettle in Canada, do you guys reckon I will have problem with finding a job? I wouldn''t mind doing Help Desk, or repairing comps and such. Will I need more school when I get there to do even that? Rough sallary estimates?

He meant to India.

In the Los Angeles area alone we have UCLA, Loyola, USC, and Southwestern law schools. I put those in general order of academic prowess, though people will argue about the last three depending on which one they attended. There''s a couple in San Diego, too. There are a bunch of small law schools that are accredited by the California Bar, but not by the ABA - avoid those schools at all costs! It is very difficult to get a job unless you have a degree from an ABA school.

Don''t forget to bring a giant pile of money with you. It cost me about $100,000 (tuition, food, rent, books, etc.) to attend Loyola ten years ago, I''m sure it is worse now. I''m still a few years from paying off the first half of my loans, so my monthly loan payments are still about $1,000 monthly. The other half of my loans are on a 30-year note. I had to refinance my loans for very long periods because my chosen field (municipal law) doesn''t pay nearly as well as some others.

<editorial> Public interest law is being totally screwed by the huge cost of law school. Most graduates can''t afford to be advocates for the poor or public defenders or deputy city attorneys because the relatively low pay of those jobs isn''t enough to cover their loan payments. Most graduates without loan payments were at the very top of their class getting scholarships, and the starting salaries they can make at large firms are usually too tempting to pass up. It is really eroding access to the justice system. </editorial>

I am part of evil america in its most capitalistic forms.

Banker by day, mortgage lender by night, father all the time, and gamer with whatever is left.

Exactly why I decided not to continue pursuing a legal career. That and the $100K you mentioned earlier :D. Looking back on it, not racking up any school debt has allowed me to really enjoy my youth as opposed to slaving away in a firm somewhere.

It''s really hard to say, I''ve seen a ton of things right across this country ranging from $9.75 /hr for someone with a MCSE ! for a helpdesk to the average which can range from aboot 36 - 50 K a year depending on where you work and if you''re bilingual.

If you speak french you could get something in Ottawa in a snap or toronto for that matter. Problem is now lots of companies aren''t recruiting heavily. We (EDS) have a ton of jobs to fill but we can''t cause we''re on a freeze.

With your creditials I could easily see you hired by us, IBM or one of the banks, bilingual isn''t required but would help.

Let me know when you start getting close to moving and I''ll see what either I or some friends can come up with for ya.

That sounds about right to me.

As someone with a History degree I concur.

As for me... reporter/photographer in a small Vancouver Island city.

Thanks Spot! Real good info.

You know what, even 9,75/hr is fine for start. I am in no illusion that I''m up for a cakewalk, but I simply have to get out of this place ASAP. I am not bilingual, but my lady is, however. She''s in marketing. With what you said, we should do fine when we put whatever money we make on a little pile.

Offer for help is much appreciated. Now back to studying...

PS
Pardon my ignorance, but what is EDS?
edit: I just googled it out... One of the big boys, nice.

I feel you on the Grad school thing, brother. I''m supposed to be finishing my PhD in archaeology right now, but I was just so miserable spending all my time studying and writing papers that I just couldn''t take it any more. I could spend maybe 2 hours a week gaming, and that''s it.

I ended up getting a full-time position as a Web Developer at the university, and now my evenings and weekends are actually enjoyable. I haven''t quit the program officially, but I really can''t see myself going back to being a student.
