Spot the irony

A lot of people would say that irony lies in an affordable housing advocate not being able to afford a house.

I don't know much about Ventura county, but he's going to try again here in Connecticut. Anyone here can tell you THATS irony.

You would think he could get somthing at 80k annual with intrest rates the way they are.

I remember seeing a story in National Geographic about a Silicon Valley programmer making $100K a year with a family of four, and they were homeless for a while...The average house price where he worked was like $700K or something.

Good lord. Makes me glad to live in a market where a nice house runs about $130,000.

I had a friend out east that was looking for a house. He was looking for something similar to ours and it was just over double the price.

Tell me about it. I couldn''t afford to live in my hometown, now I wonder if my kids will be able to live in ours.

The bottom has to fall out of the housing market eventually, or we''ll all be bonded into indentured servitude.

I can''t afford to purchase a home within 1 hr commuting time to work (Downtown Boston). Even in the high crime area''s, housing is running over 300K for a 2 bedroom condo.

No kidding, mumford. It''s a good feeling living in a house that I could easily afford even if my fortunes took a serious turn for the worse. True, there are some minor compromises...

Example: The house two doors down burned down while the (crazy redneck) family that lived there ""just happened"" to be out. After midnight. In the middle of the week. With several children under ten years old. What a lucky coincidence! While that''s still under investigation, we haven''t seen them since, not even to get their kids'' toys out of the yard. The burned out shell? Still standing.

I feel for all of you- my house, while not palatial, is nice, in a nice neighborhood, and cost me just over $100k five years ago.

Yeah, we just purchased our first home, moving in at the end of the month. We''ve been looking for about 2 years (off and on). I have a friend in Boston who told me all about housing costs out there, and it made me feel glad that I''m stuck in the middle of a forest.

I''d find it more ironic if it wasn''t so painfully appropriate. I live in less expensive area of CA than LA, but I also don''t make anywhere near $80,000 a year. Trying to find a home for my wife and myself, and 2 bedroom 700 sq ft condos in the worst parts of town start at $120,000. Get into a nicer area and it jumps by about $50k. Your typical ""median"" house is going for about $250-$300k. Sigh Guess we get to keep the apartment.

That''s true. Still, there are some good buys. I bought one of those 2 bedroom condos in Brookline for $300k, right off the Longwood T stop. Rather pay off the interest and have some equity than flush $1,700 per month on a lease.

How many square feet? Sorry, just curious. I''ve been looking for 2 years and havent found anything in the 300-330 range that matches what I''m looking for, whcih is just a 2 bedroom that''s at least 950 sqft. My fiance works in Southie, so going from the green line to the red line would add too much time to her commute for her liking. (women!)

I''m starting to look at Framingham...or a 2 family.

We actually just started looking for a house. Plenty of decent 3 bedroom houses around here for right around $100,000. Of course, I drive an hour to work every day, but I''ve been doing that anyway.

Wow...that is scary. I bought my 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1 car garage, 1,100 square ft condo new for $65,000 about 5 years ago and sold it for a little over $70,000, then bought my house for $132,000 just a year ago using the equity and profit from the condo to pay the down payment and closing costs. I cannot imagine living in an area where something smaller than my condo cost over $300,000...ouch!

I know, it'' like rain on your wedding day, it''s like a free ride, when you''re already there. Or it''s like a Republican that shills for votes for John Kerry.

You know, I''m looking for a house around Cedar Rapids to purchase this summer or fall. With my income and expenditures (no, not counting gaming ) my top affordable price is about $85k. That won''t get me a really nice home, but it should get me something livable, at least until I have enough income to switch to something a little nicer.

Of course, now I''m not looking for as big a home as I was just a month or two ago, so that''s in my favor.

I do a fair amount of work in Ventura County, and if the guy is only looking in Thousand Oaks, no wonder he can''t find a house. If he had bothered to look inland a little bit, he could afford a house. Overall, Ventura County is getting pretty expensive though. Here''s a story about more affordable spots, which also notes that Thousand Oaks is the most expensive in the County.

I''m not sure if that qualifies as irony. It''s more unfortunately appropriate.

If on the other hand he had been an advocate for higher house prices and then found himself unable to afford purchasing a house, that would be ironic.
