St Patrick's Day party: orgy of drink and violence

ST PATRICK'S DAY celebrations descended into chaos after violent scenes marred celebrations across the country.

Gardaí made dozens of arrests following drunken brawls and a string of public order offences in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Mayo, Sligo and Kerry.

In one incident a pregnant woman was hospitalised after being she was punched in the stomach outside a city centre nightclub in Cork.

A woman watching the Dublin parades with her family contacted gardaí after she witnessed a teenage girl performing oral sex on her teenage boyfriend at 3pm on Grafton Street.
Accident and Emergency departments in the major hospitals were over-run as staff tried to cope with hundreds of revellers with drink-related injuries.

"It was like Italia 90 all over again when Ireland drew with England," a spokesman for Dublin''s Mater Hospital said.

Some of the more serious incidents were reported in Dublin where gardaí handled more than 2,500 call-outs.

More than 50 people were arrested in the centre of Dublin in 12 hours as gangs of fighting youths marred the celebrations.

A garda had to call for reinforcements after he was knocked to the ground in a mini-riot on Grafton Street shortly before 6pm.

In Tallaght, more than 100 were involved in a mass brawl. Eyewitnesses said the fighting broke out between large groups of youths who had gathered in a field.

In Cork, gardaí arrested more than 40 people after a number of fights broke out in the city centre.

Two men were taken to hospital with a number of wounds following a fight with broken bottles in Youghal, Co Cork.

In Limerick, there were more than 20 arrests, most of them for public order offences.

In Waterford city, 12 people were arrested for public order offences. Gardaí said it was quieter than previous years.

In Castlebar, Co Mayo, six people were arrested, with additional gardaí patrolling the streets

In Kerry, a man was stabbed just after 6pm in Tralee, gardaí said.
