GWJ Fund-raising Drive?

An offhand thought-

As I watch everyone as we go scrambling around looking for servers to play BFV and UT2k4 on, it occurs to me that maybe we could pool our resources and get a dedicated server up. I realize that servers cost a lot (exactly how much, I have no idea), but if 50 of us ponied up some cash, how big would each contribution have to be?

Just brainstorming..

If I had a decent upload rate I''d build one.

Since I don''t, I''ll be happy to put in on it.

Yeah, my connection just isn''t enough to host a server for these new-fangled bandwidth/resource hogs anymore. I''d be willing to put in on one as well, but Dramatic Marlin''s server is indeed a good one. I guess it depends on how many people are willing to chip in.

Game Title:
BattleField Vietnam
Server Type:
Private
Slots: 32

Cost Per Slot Per Month:
$4.00 USD
Cost Per Month:
$128.00 USD
One-time Setup Fee:
$20.00 USD
Total Due at Signing:
$148.00 USD

After the one time set fee of $20, its only $4 per person per month.

That is really not much! Man, I wish I''m closer...

That is for a private server (I think that means that only the 32 people that buy slots can ever play on that server), whereas a 32 slot public server will cost $8.00 per slot and the Total Due at Signing is $276.00.

Really what we need is for Gameguru to hook us up with some 3mb upload broadband connections so Gorack can host us some games

What type of upload do you need?

I have 1.54mbps that is largely unused...

I could get a decent P4 3.0ghz 1gb Ram Dell pc to host...

is that sufficient?

Sounds pretty good to me! Anybody with a more qualified technical background wanna weigh in on that?

It would be worth a shot! Do you have UT2K4 or BF:V to give it a test run?

Someone give me an idea of the kind of hardware I''d need to host 32 players for either BF:V and/or UT2004 and I''ll order it tonight..

It would be up and running Friday afternoon in time for the weekend..

We could either password it or just ensure that enough of us are admins to keep the population under control

I might go a little higher on the ram since it''s a server. Maybe 2 or 3 gigs, other than that sounds great to me. I don''t think it has to be very fast ram either. I''m still willing to kick in a few bucks too.

I''ve never run a Game server mainly because of my sucky upload speeds, but from what I have heard the more ram you have the better. Other than that, I would think that a P4 3.0 would be plenty enough processor, maybe the HT will even come in handy

ok I''m ordering a P4 3.0ghz 2gb Ram 80gb 7200rpm machine...

Sounds like it will be enough..

Videocard doesnt matter right? GF FX5200 should be fine?

Ok its ordered...should be here Thursday or Friday...

I''ll set it up and let everyone know the ip..

What should we call the server?

Gameguru''s House

It is plain and simple

Sweet Jesus Guru, what the hell are you doing? ""So yeah, I just figured on a whim I''d buy a server and hook it up so the guys on the GWJ forums have a place to play""

Simply amazing.

What should we call the server?

Well that depends really. If you want it to be the official GWJ game server then call it that. Otherwise I say run a server naming contest, I''ll even put up a prize for whoever comes up with the best name!

Yeah, the video card shouldn''t matter at all.

Wow, sweet! Can''t wait until we can give it a shot! Gameguru''s House sounds good

I''ve got to assume GG is joking, otherwise we''ll have to name the GWJ office building after him in the distant future where GWJ needs an office building.

Damn cool is right.

no I dont joke like that...

It will be an official GWJ server...

It wont be named after me...

It''s up to you guys if you want to call it GWJ something or something else entirely...just let me know.

*edit*

And it will be running on redudant T1''s with BGP protocal so it should stay up all the time

basically after 6pm EST there is zero traffic on those T1''s since they are dedicated for our 2 Bloomberg terminals...and I have a full class C for it.

Someone should tell me a good automated way to temp down it at 8am EST until 6pm EST other than that it can run all night.

Well that, my friend, is pretty friggin'' cool.

We shall celebrate GAMEGURU day soon!

Okay, that''s it. I''m swearing off Moosehead Lager. I''m starting to see things.

The third-party command tool for BFV that comes on the third CD allows you to schedule the server. You can set a schedule to shut it down and restart it based on a set time.

The Passion of the Gameguru

He really is here to save us all.

Thats perfect...

Hopefully Pyro can incorporate some webbased server browser so you can connect to the server from gwj.com and see who is on and whats playing.

www.goatsbarandgrill.com (my fav ET server) has that from their webpage...though it isnt very elegant.

And...that reminds me...I guess we need a Teamspeak server too?

right?

<-----pulls up a chair with some popcorn to watch the show...

Man, I love mooching off of other people''s disposable income.

This is just amazing...
*wipes tear from eye*
I...I...I love you man....

<removed question about throttling since its been answered>

By temp down do you mean temporarily take the server down? or throttle the bandwidth down to nothing? or some combination?

no I''m afraid at business hours it will have to go down...

Those Bloomberg terminals are crucial...we literally could lose 30-40K if a trade doesnt go through the exact moment we require.

But I dont think it will be a huge deal...it can stay up to satisfy all North American timezones...

and besides..shouldnt we all be working?

*edit*

The server will be up..it just wont be hosting any games.. if that makes any difference?

I could put it on our other T1 full time but then Its competing with all our regular internet and email and VPN traffic..
