Deus Ex getting the shaft?

I didn't like the original Deus Ex. My best friend got it with his video card and gave it to me. He didn't care for it ether.

Too difficult to do anything, too many options, gadgets, buttons.

Now from my point of view, it seems the game is getting shafted by the fans because the developers took out a lot of the things I didn't like about the game. The changes they made have my interest, while they seem to enrage other people.

Has anyone played the game that has never really got into the original? Are the game sites / fans just being too hard on the game?

Shorter - Good.
Simpler interface - Thank god.
Dumbed down - makes me happy.
Big ugly HUD - Is this really annoying? or do you get used to it?

I love a good single player FPS / RGP game. NOLF 2 comes to mind, loved it.

Any non-fans of the original out there have any impressions on the game?

I just made it invisible in the options, no real ""getting used to it"" required.

Overall, I enjoyed the original and I''m enjoying this one equally and for many of the same reasons despite the ""dumbing down"" a lot of fans are complaining about. They both have interesting stories, a good variety of choices to make and bonuses for exploration. The combat works well enough and while the graphics aren''t top notch they do get the job done.

I get the feeling a lot of the complaints stem from PC gamers getting nervous about the console/PC ports which are becoming more and more prevalent. Deau Ex 2 is an obvious example of this and people are getting all riled up about it.

The biggest issue I have is not with anything you have stated... I''m fine with most of their design decisions...

The critical flaw is that in so creating a cross-platform game (Xbox) they were forced to make the levels tiny...and I mean tiny.. You can frequently go from one load screen to another load screen in less that 7 seconds. (with 10 second load screens)

Combat is tight..because there are very few large areas..most of the rooms are tiny..and cramped. The Leg''s biomod is useless beyond belief... because simply theres hardly anywhere to run or jump. I remember the first game I had to get out of the hotel that became surrounded by UNATCO forces.. I broke a window leaped from the roof activating my legs biomod to absorb the higher falls..

That simply has evaporated in this game.. You never feel like your in a city..but rather a small building at all times..I miss the open environments and the large sprawling maps..

Here all your objectives and alternative objectives are basically within a stones throw..Theres no need to be worried about running from guards because a load screen is seconds away.

This is its biggest flaw IMO.. and unpatchable.. Overall I think so far the end result is I will be satisfied with the game.. but I''ll be longing for better and a true sequal.

WS arrogance so far leads me to believe they will not reverse their stand and go back to a more DX feel with DX3 but rather continue this path...which is very dissapointing.

Perhaps Thief 3 will be different.. I can''t see how reducing the maps to the size of DX2 in Thief 3 can work.

I''m always surprised that more developers haven''t caught on to streaming levels like Bungie did with Halo. After I played that two years ago I expected it to show up in all sorts of games, but still nothing touches many of the things they''ve done.

I''m still on the fence with DX. If you can just leave one of the tiny areas to avoid guards thats bad. Metal Gear Solid (sons) had that really everywhere, and among many other things, it really killed the game for me.

That ""one ammo"" thing, does it work? I''m the type to save one rocket, grenade or clip. I picture geting peeved at losing one rockets from firing my machine gun.

The Ammo Scavenger mod is essential, but I''d save it for the rocket launcher or the mag rail, since they gobble ammo and you''ll need them against armored or biomodded oppenents.
