Temporary Hiatus of P&C Forum...

In another posting Elysium raised the issue of placing a temporary hiatus on the P&C forums.

http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/index....

It is likely that he will go through with it. Although it is his and Certis' site, and they have every right to turn this site into a Financial Adviser site if they wanted. For what it's worth, your opinions may have some value.

Farscry raised some concerns. I derived from his posting that he did not appreciate that some people maintain consistant political viewpoints. He believes this phenomenom is rationale for a cessation of debate since we know where everyone stands.

I believe Farscry made a good point in his posting. He didn't like what he read so he didn't post. That's the American way. If you don't like what you read, turn the page or change the dial. The free exchange of ideas are what makes this country great.

I love to see open debate, even if it is fiery and uncompromising. This board would be boring without Ral and Ratboy and the others. I wouldn't post if it was just me and Ral patting each other on the back. Sometimes the back and forth gets a little tiresome, but I just scroll on down and look for the frog to see if I've said anything witty. But it doesn't upset me that people have firm convictions in their political beliefs. I have no illusions that I will ever change anyone's mind about anything on this board. It's not my mission too.

And that's where I am confused. How can anyone be troubled by what they read on this board? There is nothing racial offensive, the antisemitic remarks are kept to a minimum, and the personal attacks are virtually gone. From what I have seen the postings have been remarkably responsible and for the most part intelligent. Sure, we have some fun, why must politics be so contentious?

Reread my posting as a Democrat. Nothing I said was inconsistent with Democrat policy. You would only believe it is sarcasm if you knew my previous political affiliation. As per my personality, I played it longer than I should have. However, I got the hint and stopped. It was not my intention to ridicule Democrats. I just wanted to be in their shoes for awhile. Think like they do. Play the Devil's advocate if you will.

Anyway, I believe a temporary hiatus of the political forum would do nothing. When it is restored, Ral and Ratboy will still tow the party lines and I'll still be unfunny. If the forum does truly upset you, as host of the Website, I believe you should shut it down completely. You guys put a lot of time and money into this, and I certainly don't think you should have to support something you don't respect.

HOWEVER, do not disrespect the members of this forum, who have been on here for so long and certainly deserve some respect for their loyalty, by placing the blame of any cessation of the site on them out of fear "of what may come to pass if you let it go". You know us well by now. You have changed the rules and we have followed them. We have shown respect to you by conforming to your concerns.

The forums are as they were when I started several months back. I genuinely like everyone on here. I am interested in other people's opinions, even if I know what they'll say before they say it. If I didn't, I would follow Farcry's lead.

In any case, do what you will, I appreciate the opportunity to be heard on the matter.

Good day....

Why do we even bother debating this anymore? Notice how rarely I post in this forum these days? It''s because we keep throwing the same old accusations and defenses over and over, both sides switching from offense to defense and back again.

It''s like watching the most boring baseball game in history. We''re at the 103rd inning. (that was just a random number, fyi)

This is a quote from Farscry from the other thread. I must say that I disagree with it. You would be surprised at just how intriguing the P&C forum can be despite never changing anyones mind. If you throw out a theory, get slammed from the other side, and get negligable support from those who generally agree with you, go back and do your homework and strengthen your argument. Analyse whats vulnerable and draw your own conclusions.

We may bicker and remain steadfast by our credo, but we are fiercly battling naivete here. That is our common ground.

If anyone here posts an overly generalized, minimally educated post, they will get reamed. It can go to far and it can get personal. We lost Maddy and if anything I think that will make us more prone to step in before we go to far again.

We are all still learning. First we went too far with personal attacks. Next we went too far with sarcastic role playing. In the future it will be something else.

I hope P&C does not go away. Silly as it may sound, I much prefer getting perspective here than the local news. It helps alot to know where the other side stands.

I appreciate the opinions on the matter. Actually, Lawyeron, your argument is pretty convincing. I guess that''s why you''re a lawyer - that and all the cars and women. Fact is, your argument is an empassioned and genuine one, and I feel pretty swayed by it. I certainly have my reactionary moments, but I try very hard to listen to what you guys say and what you guys want. In this case, I think you may be right and I may have been quick to judge.

I guess if I believe that you guys get value out of this forum section then I wouldn''t have a reason to close it temporarily or otherwise.

Just for the record, this is the part that sold me.

Anyway, I believe a temporary hiatus of the political forum would do nothing. When it is restored, Ral and Ratboy will still tow the party lines and I''ll still be unfunny. If the forum does truly upset you, as host of the Website, I believe you should shut it down completely. You guys put a lot of time and money into this, and I certainly don''t think you should have to support something you don''t respect.

HOWEVER, do not disrespect the members of this forum, who have been on here for so long and certainly deserve some respect for their loyalty, by placing the blame of any cessation of the site on them out of fear ""of what may come to pass if you let it go"". You know us well by now. You have changed the rules and we have followed them. We have shown respect to you by conforming to your concerns.

Excellently put.

I second what Lawyeron and Fang said. Of course we all know everones position. And of course we know what everyone will say to certain topics. But nonetheless there are still posts that make me thing about my position on certain topics.

And for me personally it is even more interesting to see what is going on at the other side of the globe and what you guys are thinking about the latest international affairs. I just don''t have the time to look through all the foreign news. But I can be sure about is that if there is a topic that interests a broader audience, it will be covered here. And there surely are points made that make me refine my position on these topics.

I think Fangs last sentence covers best how I think about a possible hiatus of these forums.

Man, everybodys'' beards are really creeping me out.

What beard?

You all have warmed this cold conservative''s heart. Now I''m going to drive my Miata to Club Europe and have a threesome with a couple of latino babes. Ciao baby!

Hey Lawyeron, I think maybe I came off wrong in that other post.

Or rather, I wasn''t fully writing down my thoughts.

See, considering some other things going on in my life outside this forum (I know, I know, what life? But no, seriously...), and the general content lately, there just hasn''t been anything much interesting to me. The only thing that I''ve found notable is that Rat and Lawyeron are doing the whole ""sarcastic posting like the worst stereotype of the other party"" thing, which started funny but just got dull.

To me.

And that''s the key; I just returned this morning and saw this topic, and wondered how someone got the notion of closing the P&C forum. I sure hope it wasn''t sparked by me, because that wasn''t my intent.

I''ve written this next thing many times before, and hopefully no one''s forgotten it, but I do respect pretty much everyone on this board. I''ve also previously written that this is the most articulate and mature group of folks I''ve seen in a message board that dealt with real issues.

...Okay, so maybe not the mature part, at least all the time, but you know what I meant.

And I also agree with what Fang said: this board is much more interesting and enlightening than any news station I''ve seen (""liberal"" and ""conservative"" news channels alike), because we have enough various viewpoints to hit most sides of any issue.

And I guess that''s why I''ve been bored here lately, is because I have to trudge through all the sarcastic stereotyping to get any real content. Does that mean it shouldn''t be there? Pffft, it''s supposed to be a free country.

All I was doing was explaining my temporary absence of late, nothing more, nothing less.

Do not close the P&C forums, I implore you. Despite occasional stretches, I find it the most consistently interesting and entertaining forum on GWJ.

Which is odd, since I got hooked on the site for purely the gaming content.

Well Freedom of Speech won again. I''m still going to be sarcasm boy, but I''ll tone it down.

I sure hope it wasn''t sparked by me, because that wasn''t my intent.

It definitely was not. It was my own thoughts on the matter that led to that ill-fated conclusion. Now, I get the fun of playing damage control for shooting off my mouth. Not the first time that''s happened.

Anyway let me make this clear:

The P&C forums will not be shut down.

Cool. Thanks Elysium!

This is what happens when Elysium posts without running it through the ""Certis filter"" first. I''ll try to tighten the leach guys, sorry for the slip.

Not the leeches again!

I''m going to leave that typo, it still kind of makes sense and has a strange appeal to me.

And how knows, maybe someday I''ll have enough posts to become the ""Gay Marriage Pimp"".

And if nothing else I think this board tempts me to actually take the time to create a sig time and again.

e.g. Certis: Tightening the leeches, one at a time.

Sure only a few of us would get it, but I suppose that''s part of the point....
