Interesting article that was printed in MaximumPC a while ago on how hard drives work. Goes into some good details of the inner workings of a hard drive without getting too technical. After reading the article I am pretty amazed they are as reliable as they are, quite an engineering feat.
Good lord almighty. That was a great article, and completely blows my mind.

Wow, you weren''t kidding. That was a very insightful article on one of the less sexy computer components. It sort of makes you wonder how permanent your data really is. Having just upgraded to a 7200rpm 120GB Western Digital, I''m starting to think I should have treated it more carefully. Good primer on RAID in that article as well. Thanks for linking to it, Stric9.

That Q&A at the bottom was pretty interesting and I enjoyed the bit on Serial ATA. That''s a nice overview of everything. I didn''t know rounded cables could impact performance and corrupt data for instance. I really want Serial ATA now
By the way I highly recommend MaximumPC they come up with some pretty interesting stuff for $12 a year.

Intresting tidbit about rounded ATA cabling possible inhibiting performance, though it was definitly a text book answer, real world you still might gain performance through better cooling.
I noticed at Fly''s the other day that they had a bunch of 200gig drives bundled with PCI SATA cards :).
