Our Dirty Shameful Secret

We here at GWJ have a confession to make. We've been, ummm, boy guys I really don't know how to say this. I mean it's sort of embarrassing. Mostly, it was Certis' idea, and then he called SOE and they 'hooked' us up (I use hook in a variety of definitions there), and anyway here it is. We're ummm, uh...

We're playing Everquest.

Boy, I feel better just for saying it. Anyway, Sway, Certis, and myself are taking about one night a week and delving back into the world of Norrath. Mostly we're doing it to write up an article in the future, but also it's always strangely satisfying to fire up a game like Everquest and visit it again, have some tea and cookies, and catch up on old times.

"Remember that time I bought a Runed Totem Staff for 50 plat?!" I say.
"Haha," Everquest retorts. "You always were a moron."

So, the point of this is, we've always wanted to play in a somewhat regular larger group of folks, and well, we're honestly here to see if anyone here still plays or even has EQ. We have, and happily use, the expansion Kunark, Shadows of Luclin, and the indispensible Planes of Power. I also have Ykesha, and I think Certis and Sway are getting it or already have it, or something. It's not as important.

Anyway, you may proceed to point and laugh at us now.

*points and laughs*

Stand up tall, and march proudly behind your banner that boldly states:
""We''re here. We play Everquest. Get used to it!""

Oh god.

I suppose in a month or two, we''re going to have to change the name of the site to GamersWhoUpUntilRecentlyHadJobs.com. It''s definitely not something easy to admit, even to other gamers. It''s got such a stigma attached to it, and only most of it is true, that it becomes quite an outing when announced.

However, this one game was able to nearly instantly revive me from the gaming slump I posted about last week. Certis brought out the big guns when he staged this intervention. And, I''ll say again what I told Certis, ""EQ just scratches a lot of itches."" We all know that in the big picture, it doesn''t matter what level we achieve or what tunic we were able to locate. But that doesn''t make hanging out and exploring or laughing at Certis roleplaying as a large bipedal cat any less fun.

So if you are unashamed, or are willing to deal with the shame, please feel free to join our relaxed stroll through Norrath.

I don''t even know you anymore!

But that doesn''t make hanging out and exploring or laughing at Certis roleplaying as a large bipedal cat any less fun.

/me Sprays Elysium.

I don''t even know you anymore!

This is all your fault you know, if you''d gotten us into Horizons things might have been different.

Can''t you sometimes spray, Sway? I mean, really, this is staining my clothes now, and I''m pretty sure you''re trying to start some kind of mating ritual with my poor kitty. And, here''s a clue. When someone is buffing you, wait til they''re done before explaining that you''re in heat!

good lord! why! oh god why!?

Sheesh... most of my guild still plays that horrible game despite my chastizing.. but anytime I even get the slightest urge to play I look at our message boards and read about some horrible camp and viola! I''m instantly taken back to horrifying visions of planar raids and endless hours of camping rare spawns and I realize just how pointless the whole endevor really was..

Blergh...what a waste of time.

I question wether anyone can really be a gamer with a job and play EQ... the only time I made any progress in that damn game is when I was consulting and working from home 90% of the time..

Remember when I asked for free stuff Certis? I meant anything but Everquest. Don''t get me wrong, Im glad Sway is out of his slump and you guys are having a good time. I dont want to play mainly because people who play EQ alot will then think its ok to talk to you about it. A few conversations about EQ and I will end up hurting myself or others, with a spoon.

Id also like to quote Gaald

Oh god.

That game is scary, after hanging around hardcore guys for a while.

I''ve never played EQ. Never plan on it. And despite my lack of first hand knowledge of the game, I feel morally superior to you.

If it wasn''t freely given, would ya''ll still be playing it?

Oh yeah.....ya''ll are doing ''research''.

Maybe Yomm would calm down if he did.

Or at least try a minor MMO thingamajig. I''d suggest SFC2''s Dynaverse (lots of conservatives there ) if it worked half the time and if you could play it from behind a router (even if you open the ports, it doesn''t work).

I''ve always argued, and continue to argue that what ruins EQ is the mindset some people play it in. Hardcore? Phhht! Boring. Played as a casual game, Everquest is much like any other co-op experience, and can be fun as such.

Id have to say I agree with this. Really, its not the game that''s at fault, but the community it has built. Its that community I want no part of. Thats why when someone asks I say ""I dont play EQ"". I dont want ""what lvl is ur char, class, do u have magic stien lol!?!"" I can''t stand it, with a passion. To me, playing it as a casual game isn''t worth the hassle of being labeled as an EQ player. Theres plenty of other games out there to play that don''t have the stigma attached. I guess it boils down to ""if you had to spend 50 on the game and expansions to start playing, would you spend that money on another game instead?"" which I guess is better left up to the review.

Did you guys start new characters for this? If so what server are you on, I wouldn''t mind joining this little foray (if you''ll have me of course )

Brrrr! I''m glad I''ve stayed vlear of the MMORPG''s I mean Planetside has onl the shallowest aspects of an RPG and I''m damn well addicted, I''m talking 5 hrs a day every day addiction! If I got involved in something much deeper I''d be one of those people who die in front of their P.C,s from lack of eating and sunlight!

Mind you now that the EU has gone added tax to my monthly subscription $15 a month now! I may have to look closely at my subsciption. This will affect every Online game in the EU and may well cost some games a lot of their subscribers. Way to go EU! I love paying more tax!

You started without me? *sobs uncontrollably*

I cant believe you snubbed Diggam Smaques! He is now going to willingly subject himself to ambulatory research for the French.

Post the server and time and I''ll ""hop"" on over. Ribit!

This is interesting, Kegboy. Is it a tax on internet commerce in general? Specifically MMOGs? What if you were to subscribe to an e-mag of something? Maybe we need a new thread for ""European (Re)Oppression.""

Actually, Sin and Fang, we decided to keep quiet until we decided if we were going to stick it out. Yes we started new characters (and we''ll probably restart new characters) on Mithaniel Marr. You''re both welcome to join us, of course.

OMG. Sometimes I still think I need therapy from the psychic wounds that this game inflicted upon me.

Speak for yourself. I''m quite content with my exciting young cat bard. I don''t have a clue what I''m doing, since I''ve never played a bard before, but maybe that''s what''s making it so enjoyable. So I guess you all better get your new characters to about the same level as mein bard (7) before the next trip in amongst the mobs.

Well let me know what kind of classes you guys are playing and I will pick something to help augment the group the best.

I''m either sticking with my Shaman, or I''m going to reroll a Druid or a monk. Not sure. I think we''ve already got enough kitties in the group, and maybe if I''m human Certis won''t want to spray his scent on me.

Well Elysium, all I can say is, don''t make a Druid. Terrible terrible class later in the game. Shaman''s on the other hand are absolutely indespensible.

I am thinking either a Cleric or a Shadowknight for myself.

I''m not sure exactly the announcements on planetsides home page, I think it''s a legal loophole thats just recently ben shut, apparently we (europeans) have been avoiding paying tax on monthly internet subscriptions for some reason and the bean counters have decided to screw us a bit more by making us pay tax on our monthly subscriptions for intenet services. Don''t know whether or not it''s just aimed at games specifically or all internet subscriptions. I really ought to read up on it a bit more.

Kegboy, I think the tax is aimed at just plain internet use, so the tax will apply to your ISP fee''s.

After doing a bit more research I''ve found out that the tax is to be applied to all non european internet retailers, ie Aol TimeWarner, E-bay, SOE etc. It''s been applied because EU based internet retailers have been complaining that they can''t compete with the non-Euro based retailers as the users of these retailers haven''t had to pay eU tax on their subscriptions, now we do, thank you EU bean counters!, like we''re not some of the most haevily taxed countries in the world already.

Maybe I''ll just stick with my Shaman then. Still, I''ve always wanted to play a Monk out. Hmmm.

We should figure out when we''re going to play next.

Druids are absolutely fine. They arent indespensible at higher levels but they can support heal and nuke just fine as well as snare.

Really the games been around for 4 years. Any balance gripes at this point are nit picks.

If we are going to have a bit of healers and a bard, then I''d like to do a little role reversal and play a warrior... finally. I''ve always had to pick up a healer type as most people get so bored from sitting too much. Ooh! I''ve got it!

My froggy warrior name will be Loksin Bayguls!!!!! Woo!

Mmmm, bayguls.

Classic post of why I absolutely ended up loathing EQ.

Thanks for the memories!

thats just what I was thinking. Gee lets see, what race/class/stats/spells will keep me from becoming useless 6 months later.

Not to dump on your thread, just the EQ lingo makes me nauseous
