The Eric Eldred Act

Yes! Yes Virginia there is a public domain!

The Eric Eldred Act

Congresswoman Lofgren (D-CA) and Congressman Doolittle (R-CA) have agreed to introduce the Public Domain Enhancement Act into Congress.'

Basically, what happens is this. After 50 years, you can pay a very tiny tax, $1, to have your copyright extended, per year. If you don't, it goes into the public domain. This way, stuff that doesn't get used can be released into the public domain, and the corporations won't pay to have this bill killed, because it doesn't hurt them at all. It may even help them, if the public domain grows, then people will bitch less about how they're killing it.

What do you guys think?

Personally, anything that increases the public domain is great, however there could be a backlash. If the public domain becomes more popular, and is free, the media cartels will have to compete with it, instead of choking it to death like they do now. Either way though, I win!
