Galactic Civilizations or how random chance can win the day

Allright, so I started my first full game in a huge galaxy yesterday. After colonizing my little "banana" of the galaxy (that's what it looks like on the map), I still hadn't encountered any major aliens. Then I bump into the Arceans, who were most likely set on the "Pissy" alignment since they started to issue demands for tribute. Fearing that a war was inevitable, I started dumping money into the military budget. Then I get a message from a research team saying that they found a Ranger-class starship. Ranger's are very nice starships, even more so when you get them in the 2190s. She sports an attack rating of 18, movement of 8, HP in the 60s, and the ability to analyze anamolies. It's like sending Picard's Enterprise up against a Klingon ship from the Enterprise show. Later in the buildup to war, another research team said that they found "several" Corvette-class ships. That "several" ended up being 85 ships in total. Once war came, I started hitting their fleets left and right and so far have taken three starsystems away from them. The Drengrin were so in awe, they decided to join with me. The Altairans are so impressed that they're giving me starships to use in my war. And those poor Arceans have yet to give me an acceptable peace deal. Additionally, some of the Arcean worlds are breaking off to join the League of Non-Aligned Worlds (stolen from B5) or the Altairans. And soon, I'll have that Restaurant at the End of the Universe built. Despite all that, the Earth Today Magazine says I could lose. Harumph. Damn hippies.

No question Galactic Civ is a fantastic game. I saw you were wondering whether to pick up Gal Civ or Rise of Nations. A bit like asking if you should get a million dollars in fifties or hundreds ... you end up with a million dollars either way.

Well, I chose GalCiv. Can I have the million dollars now?

Well, it was all for naught. I apparently ticked off the Torians and then they sent a fleet of Dreadnaughts to exterminate me. Well, that''s how the cookie crumbles.
