Bugs Bunny to speak out against land mines

From CNN

?

Well, it was either that or have him beat up a Middle Eastern stereotype figure. Now it would be nice if the US would take a step to end the use of land mines, but that's another pipe-dream of mine that stands no chance of happening in today's political climate...

From the ICBL

BiH is probably the most heavily mined country in Europe following extensive use of landmines, especially antipersonnel mines, remaining from the 1992-1995 war. A considerable quantity of UXO also affects the country. By 2 February 2001, BHMAC had recorded 18,145 minefields; however, it estimates the probable total number to be 30,000.

It also states later on that there is an estimated two million pieces of UXO (unexploded ordinance) left in the country.

Landmines are terrible weapons but unfortunately to strategically useful and frankly to effective to be discarded by any military anytime soon.

That''s just the problem. The value of a weapon''s usefulness outweighs the impact on civilians, innocents, or in military terms non-combatants (or some such crap). I''m sure there''s some argument to be made about realism, but it''s just a rationalization some people hide behind to me. While useful is fine, there needs to be a better balance of making sure when we kill someone, that that person is our enemy.

This is more a general statement about my perspective, and not so much a direct reply to your statement, Reaper.
