Newt Gingrich attacks Colin Powell, State Department

From Yahoo!/Reuters

I wonder how widely shared this belief is in the Republican Party.

My guess is, honestly, not much. Colin Powell is a well respected and eminent member of the party. Gingrich has become something of an embarassment. I''m surprised he can still get into the news.

Powell is the future of the party....newt is the past. He won''t be making any speeches at the convention in 2004.

And what is Rick Santorum? Past or future?

Past.

The evil Neocons you talk about wouldn''t have Santorum in the leadership.

Wow. I''m far from a card carrying member of the Republican Party but I know quite a few and they love Powell.

This is just a sad attempt by Newt to get back into the limelight.

And why hasn''t there been any talk by the Party about condemning Santorum''s latest remarks? Or even removing him from his leadership roles in the Senate, just like Trent Lott? Or even Newt Gingrich in the House? Why are there factions in the Party defending what Santorum said?

There were factions that defended Lott. It will take a few days.

But will Santorum get the axe? I doubt there will be a big push to do that within the party.

What did Santorum say?

Past.

Ok Ulairi, I dont want to read too much into it, but are you saying Neocons are the future of the Republican party?

Yes. However, the full Neocon ideology. Many people have reducing neocons down to being ''war mongers'' (on this forum too). I believe that Neocons are Liberals with a big L. Powell and Rice are both Neocons.

Read here.

In short, Santorum pulled a Trent Lott against homosexuals. No wait, this is worse. Lott''s comments required a little reading in to, but Santorum''s opinion isn''t vague at all. But what will happen? I''m willing to bet nothing. Why? Because it may be easier to defend a negative opinion about gays than it is to defend a negative opinion about blacks.

Yes, I''m aware how bad what I said sounds but it''s an unfortunate truth.
