What's up with those crazy Germans?

Just saw a report on the news about a mass boycott of American products in Germany. Since we have a real German who posts on these forums I'm hoping he can give us the real truth. Sometimes the media over-blows certain things to kick up public opinion.

I'll just say this until I know more: For a country who has a really bad economy boycotting the worlds largest economy is not a good idea.

Well, if it was shown on TV it must be true! They certainly did not grab a few people, who protest that way and stated that 99% of the German population is planning to bomb McDonald''s and Burger King stores left and right now. No, no, that''s what the media never ever would do.

I think he did, it sounded like to me you asked ""Is this really happening?"" and he very sarcastically said ""no"". Right?

That''s the tough part with text, tough to tell tone.

The ironic thing about boycotting McDonalds and American fast food chains...they are mostly independently owned, the ""McDonalds"" is only a brand. Boycotting them mostly hurts the German/French owners and the surrounding community.

I love people who so vehemently protest, and they have no friggin clue about the total ramifications of what they are doing.

too true Pulse, too true. I also get a good laugh when I order a pizza and see some NeoNazis ordering some, too. How dumb can one be, honestly? Einstein was correct about the human dullness. It seems endless.

Ulairi: I read that, too. There was a funny commentary on Spiegel about that, but sadly I can''t find it anymore.
Why any of the two the biggest and the second biggest economy in the world would boycott each other to change the others opinion is beyond me. It is just hurting themselves in the end. Also do not read too much into that. I have yet to see a shop here in Dortmund that boycotts US products. The idea is stupid to begin with.

I tried boycotting Sega for making me buy the POS Sega 32X in college, but that was about it.

Chrisg, do you have any ""American Restaurants"", or ""American Cafe''s"" by you? Those being the name of the restaurant, not the style.

I was in Nuremberg and Berlin for business and walked by a few, didn''t want to stop in since the reason I was in Germany was to get as much authentic German food and beer as possible. I remember thinking if there was ever an ideological problem with the US that those places would probably be hotbeds for a protest/boycott.

Mmh we have an American Cocktail Bar in the city. But it is too expensive to begin with, so I never visited that one :).
In a village in the outskirts of the Ruhr Area is a restaurant called Ranchouse serving American food, but that is as crowded as ever. I think why we have so few is that in the Ruhr Area only british troops were stationed. And we all know the horrible british cooking mentality ;).

Bloodpudding!

Ooooo, you can have some delicious mushrooms, cooked tomatoes and baked beans...for breakfast. Good lord, how I hate English food.

And we all know the horrible british cooking mentality

Hey I love bloodsausage mushrooms baked beans bacon and eggs for breakfast! Mmmm feel the heart attack!
