This better not be a huge Candid Camera charade. I swear to Christ, if Allan Funt comes on TV laughing hysterically at the people of America, I am going to be pissed.

Well, it was reported here that the US started to attack several hours before the ""deadline"".
Sounds kinda logical, I mean... I didn''t expect bush to be counting down the seconds to the 48 hours but...
You wanted your war, you got it. Goddamn, I feel so sad.

Looked at some threads at other sites. Remembered why I don''t visit those sites anymore. Am thankful that, by and large, we have an intelligent and worthwhile crowd here.
The thing about smart people is they seem like crazy people to dumb people -- Thing I saw on the Internet
The report I heard was that it was a sergical attack on an opportunity that arrose. 90 minutes after the 48 hour deadline.
Edit:
From BBC.com
""The attack began about 90 minutes after President Bush''s deadline for Saddam Hussein to go into exile or face war expired. ""
I have no idea what site you could possibly be talking about!
This whole situation makes me feel frustrated and powerless, and I''m not even American

They did hit some artillery emplacements earlier today, but those big guns would have to be destroyed before troops could move in to the area. That''s just obvious tactics.

Kriegshund, I think they''ve been doing that for a few days, right? I thought I read that someplace.
It''s funny how that doesn''t get picked up by the main stream news.
I think you guys are talking about the B-1 strikes a few days ago. It did get some play, but was overshadowed by the whole ultimatum thing.

Ive heard it several places. Allied planes have been bombing preemptive targets in the formerly demilitarized zones.
You gotta love the stretch the news agencies go too. NBC is claiming that they have confirmation that Saddam Hussein was the ""target of opportunity"". Everytime they have this coverage it reminds me of how much news programs are talking about nothing. They rehash footage sometimes often enough to confuse you into believing its new.
I love that ""Daily Show"" bit where the correspondants have been up for 4 days straight. They say,"" For the love of God please let me go home and go to sleep!"" ""I dont even recognize my kids anymore."" I was laughing so hard during that sketch. I think the show won an emmy for it.

Elysium, I agree with you 100%.
That other site OMG!
Why dont people understand that arguments are much more poignant when speaking calmly, applying to reason and by not calling your audience an idiot?
The sensless bickering and infighting over there is unsettling.

I was watching the news for an hour after the deadline passed uhtil about 2.20 GMT which was about 5.20 in Baghdad and then thought ""no it''s almost dawn they''ll not do anything now"".
Switched off the TV and went to bed. Wake up in the morning to find out that five minutes later everything kicked off as the cruise missiles started landing. I always miss the start.
MUST...STOP ...PLAYING ....SWG! MUST GET REAL LIFE BACK AGAIN!
''nother update:
Apparantly Iraq forces sent some scud missiles on their way to Kuwait. They did not hit the US camps they were targetting. C Alarm rang but the missiles had ordinary war heads. 2 missiles were additionally fired at kuwait city.
