TiVo - thoughts?

Greetings everyone,

I'm looking at getting a TiVo, but the new Series 2 models are ring-a-ding-a-doodle expensive. I was thinking about buying one of the low-end models of the first Series off eBay, then upgrading the HDD. Looks like I could get one with an 80gb drive for around 200 bucks. Your thoughts on that? Also, what do you think are the advantages/disadvantages of Series2 over the first? Does anything make Series2 a must have for that price?

TIA

I tend to recommend Replay over Tivo, though they are both fine machines. Course replay highly pissed me off by making the 5k model''s not backward compatible with 4k, that is rant for another time. If planet replay ever manages to come back that makes the device pretty supreme, lots of little things to like, more hacks and easier to upgrade etc. If you can pickup a used 4k series I would say go for it. Tivo''s are also excellent but they tend to try and think for you, and the Tivo folks want to get into bed with the entertainment industry so bad it makes them squirm like a little girl, sad really, so they tend to do things that are... borderline privacy wise in my opinion and they don''t have features like commercial skip. Both companies have a long way to go, but once you get used to DVR there is no going back.

Basically the series 2 adds the network stuff that the replay has had longer, but it''s a bit more restricted. That is my distilled opinion based on a friend who just ordered one to upgrade her old Tivo, she did like a 10 minute gushing ramble... but I did ask for it :p.

Thanks for the input.

I find that a bit curious as I''ve always heard that TiVo''s are much more ""hackable"" than Replay. Am I wrong? I definitly want to buy a cheaper, older model and put in an upgraded HDD. That said, is it as easy (or easier) with Replay?

I would go look at the how to pages and judge for yourself. I am not a Tivo expert though, so my perspective is a bit one sided about this. A lot of it for me is just how the two companies choose to relate to their communtiies... I used to be very pro Replay but I think with the lawsuits from the entertainment industry weighing on them they have done some pretty stupid stuff lately including failing to support one the most defining community resources (planet replay), as well as backing of unofficial dev support for the folks developing open source hacks. So now I consider getting a Tivo series 2 if I get satellite, but I''m still pretty on the fence. Commercial skip and skip 30 seconds (skip 30 can be enabled on tivo but it''s a hidden key-combo thing) are really powerful arguments for replay 4k series and up IMO.

I consider Tivo the greatest gift ever given to me, and that includes the gift of life.

Yeah DVR''s rock. I don''t know how my wife and I ever managed to share the dam TV before them. Actually we managed it very poorly and often would end up in opposite rooms alone watching some stupid show... the rub is I don''t even like TV very much

Well, I just ordered my ReplayTV 5040 today... got it for 267 with free shipping, 167 after mail-in rebates. Not too shabby, hope it works! As far as hard drive space goes, I''ve got another 40 gb on my comp to pick up the slack. 8)
