Turn based strategy

So I was looking at strategy games in Ye Olde CompUSA the other day, and all I really saw were RTS games. Now I'm sure some of them actually did compel you to use some thought and tactics to beat down your opponent, but every RTS I've really seen that's been popular has been little better then a click fest. I watched a friend of mine play Starcraft once, and he was clicking so fast I think his mouse buttons may have broken the sound barrier.
What I want is a good turn-based strategy game that doesn't make me collect wood and stone to build a hall, or any of that other crap. I want a nice simulation with some depth to it. All I really want to do is take command of my forces, and depoly them in the best ass-whupping positions, and use some tactics to win, not just have a good build order. Do such games exist? I looked at Real War briefly, and decided I really didn't have that level of commitment. Anyone have any ideas?

I mentioned this in another thread but I would just about kill, for a re-make of Fantasy General. I friggin loved that game.

Personally I''m all for turn-based anything. I really enjoy the slower pace and the ability to sit back in my chair and think about the tactics I want to use while sipping at my beer.

You just can''t do that in rts games. I just never get as much a sense of controlling the batlte as I do in turn-base.

Elysium mentioned Hearts of Iron a few days ago. Apparently it''s a game with so much depth and complexity that it will make you cry.

I also remember fantasy General (at least the demo). That looked a lot of fun, but I never saw it in any store. Turn based games seem to be dwindling... Even the Warlords series went Real Time.

Ahh, I am happy to contradict you my friend. If I recall correctly, the Warlords series returns to it''s roots later this year with an all new turn-based game. I think last I heard it was supposed to be out this summer. I''m anxiously awaiting it.

If you want turn-based strategy and haven''t played Incubation yet, you should go for this one. Quite old meanwhile, but still looks ok. Made by the guys behind the Battle Isle series. It''s basically the sci-fi version of titles like Shining Force or Final Fantasy Tactics - and apparantly it''s abandoned ware meanwhile and can be found at the Underdogs who do not tend to host illegal stuff. Also kinda features play-by-email. Check out the review if you didn''t know the game yet.

If you have a GBA, Advanced Wars rocked my world. One of the better games I''ve ever played. How do they fit all of that data on such a small cartridge?!

I think they are coming out with a Advanced Wars 2, and if you have a Game Cube you can get the GBA player and play it on the big screen

If you have Total Annihilation check out the various mods for it. Try http://www.tadesigners.com for some good ones, I personally recommend World Domination (having worked on it for some time myself 8)) and Final Frontier. Fine games for all you realism and space buffs out there!

Well, you could try Laser Squad Nemesis. It''s an email-based tactical war game with no resource management, but pure play-by-email destruction. It''s also more addictive than chocolate covered crack.

Fallout Tactics is a good turn base game, which not unfortunately went too well with the PC gamers ...:( , or I''m look to deep in to it... but as far as i know the talk about the expansion pack died pretty quickly. At my last visit at the EBstore i notice that it was about 14$ maybe 9.99$ now, that is a hefty fall from 56$ on release day!(i don''t recall but i think it took a month for that) But in my personal opinion it''s one of those games that stay on the HD for quite a while.

I''m a big fan of turn based games, I general crack them though so I can hall them around on my laptop without having to worry about the dam CD. Anyway if you haven''t tried it both Age of wonder and Age of Wonder 2 are really excellent.

The best turn based strategy game is still X-com. No game has come close (for me ) to the X-com 1&2''s mix of research and employing proper tactics is still to be beaten.

I still think T.A. is one of the best RTS games around although right now the new C&C game has certainly grabbed my time and attention like no RTS in a long time has done.

Not quite turn based, but the best rts I''ve ever played
Kohan

I cant recommend this enough.
Tactics matter
The build procedure and resource gathering arent the main focus of the game(unlike starcraft and such)
Its just great.

Missionforce: Cyberstorm. Best turn-based strategy ever. The sequel was pants, they tried to do a realtime/turnbased hybrid.

Also, I hear Fallout Tactics is good, if you learn continuous turn-based off, and just go full turnbased.

Yeah Kegboy, The first two X-Com''s hold a very fond place in my heart. I know a lot of people weren''t thrilled with the second one, but I personally enjoyed just it as much as the first one.

The HOMM series though, is probably my all time favorite. Those games have stolen more hours from me than any others. HOMM IV turned out being the first one I haven''t enjoyed. They just changed to much and it ended up not having the same feel. Here''s hoping they get it together for HOMM V.

All this talk about turn based games really has me wishing Warlords IV would come out. EB has it listed as a May release.

Holy crap! I remember playing the hell out of the demo for that thing. And I cant believe I can download the full thing. Oh wait, I cant. Can anybody else get it there?

Thanks for the suggestions. I''m going to have to write all this down next time I head out to the game store.

HELL yeah, MFC rocked the house. It''s a DAMNED shame that the bloody thing won''t run on Windows XP, as I''ve really had a hankering to play it of late.

Sorta OT, but veloxi just reminded me of a game I''d nearly forgotten about- the Earthsiege/Starsiege series. I know Starsiege pretty much bombed, but I loved Earthsiege 2. The whole mech/weapon/scavenging/construction logistical thing really worked for me...
Tribes aside, has the ''starsiege'' license been abandoned at this point? I know it wasn''t the most original concept, but there was something about those games that was just neat.

I suggest giving Kohan Ahriman''s Gift a try. It combines the gameplay of a turn based strategy game into a real time system and comes off brilliantly.

Truly fantastic game.

Kohan is definately the way to go. It has a good online crowd as well.

For turn based strategy try Disciples II.

Ok, TBS is my favorite genre.

XCOM 1 is excellent, XCOM 2 not so much. Play balance was off in XCOM2.

I do have to say my favorite TBS game is Jagged Alliance 2. Seriously in contention for best game I''ve ever played.
