Sub, or Sub not. There is no Dub.

Whenever presented with a foreign film, my preference is to leave the audio in tact and add english subtitles, rather than dub the dialogue into english (god bless the DVD). This holds true for anime and video games as well.

If I'm not alone in this, then maybe someone has a clue as to why in the flying hell anyone in charge thinks video games have to be dubbed?

FFX's dubbing drove me to wear the label off of my TV's Mute button. RAD's dubs were intentionally bad (I pray), but I still skipped them in favor of just reading what was being said. What really gets me is that both of those games are dubbed AND subtitled. Kudos to Onimusha and Ico (among others, I'm sure) for keeping the Japanese.

I'll grant that Xenosaga's dubbing sounds pretty good, from what I've heard so far, but that doesn't matter, I'd still rather they just left the audio alone.

At any rate, what's the deal with dubbing, anyway? It's okay to subtitle, we can read.

Well, some kids just don''t read very well so companies will do what they can to make sure their respective games are accessible. I know plenty of people who think a game is ""cheap if its not ""properly"" dubbed instead of just sub-titled.

I generally prefer sub-titles myself.

Good point about little kids. Games that are rated E are dubbed. All other ratings get subtitles. And for the people who think a game is cheap if it''s not dubbed, I disagree categorically and think unkind things about you in the privacy of my home.

It''s scary that PS2 and XBOX games are using DVD technology and still the developers actually cannot be bothered to allow players (Not to mention the people that actually buy their goddamned games) to experience the games in their original language.
