Shelter definitely sounds interesting, I will have to check it out. The art looks really different, that's rather refreshing. Love Sean's comment: "Parenting: the longest escort quest ever" and Allen's follow-up on the NPC's pathing getting hung up in the toy aisle. I laughed so hard, but it kinda hit home.

Really enjoyed the conversation on "Accomplishments in Gaming". I think it's important to learn when a game stops being fun, and it's still something that I struggle with. When I joined the threads here on the forums to tackle the pile, it was a huge eye opener, but it's also a double edged sword. Now, every time I start playing a game, I compel myself to play it until I can mark it as "beaten", even when I'm not having fun (I'm looking at you, Faerie Solitaire). The other example was Bit.Trip Runner which I found incredibly frustrating, downright maddening, and I kept going back to it, a true glutton for punishment. Even though at time I wanted to throw my keyboard out the window. In the end, I wised up and realized that it wasn't worth the aggravation, giving up on it right before the end of world one.

Also, Certis... A shot of antibiotics will clear that right up! Good luck with the renovations.

I, too, enjoyed this episode quite a bit. Got a good chortle on the escort quest comment as well.

The achievement conversation resonated with me quite a bit as well. I have found myself in the "wait a minute, what am I doing? This isn't fun" headspace a few times. Most recently, I was finishing up Borderlands 1 with all DLC on the Xbox. I loved the game and loved most of the DLC (Moxxie's Thunderdome or whatever it's called was lame). After I had finished all of the quests, I wanted to continue playing to finish out some Achievements and Challenges. There were two problems: 1. I used a glitch of some sort in General Knoxx where I couldn't complete the mission and then 2. I beat Crawmerax with my son, who was at a significantly higher level than I was. During the battle I leveled up around 12-15 levels, which I thought was pretty cool. Until I tried to play solo again after that. Thing is, my gear had NOT leveled up, so I was getting destroyed by just about everything. After about half an hour of that, the game was over for me. (And B2 was about to come out...)

On the other side of the coin, I recently finished the campaign in Starcraft 2 WOL. The last mission was BRUTAL. I finished the rest of the campaign in about 2 weeks of casual play, but it took me another 2 weeks, playing almost daily, to finally beat that mission. I usually don't look for walkthroughs or hints, but I studied MANY videos, and there was a point where I thought I simply wasn't going to beat the level, due to some of my choices in the tech tree. I will say that when I finally did beat it, there was a palpable sense of achievement.

Again, great show this week, and I am very glad I happened upon both the podcast and the site. Thanks!

That particular bit of the podcast was a "huh" moment for me. I don't think of parenting as an escort quest. It's more like training up Pokemon.

Oh goodness, that mission. That was satisfying to beat, but ugh such a crazy difficulty spike.

I recall a good feeling of accomplishment after finishing Persona 3, but that was most likely due to sinking 120 hours into the game. Not to mention the hour long marathon fight against the final boss.

You all should definitely give Fairway Solitaire a try. It's more addicting than it deserves to be.

Actually, I had a major Fairway Solitaire addiction a few months back. It is, indeed, quite fun.

Huh, kind of surprised rabbit didn't reference board games for accomplishment in games. Completing an epic large board game can be very rewarding.

In my defense, I'm a grad student so while I have some of the flexibility of a college student I don't have nearly as much free time. I just get more enjoyment out of say A+'ing a few levels in Super Meat Boy than plunking a few hours in the latest mid-tier shooter. Can't say for sure but overall I think I spend less time playing games than you guys.

Also the adrenal buzz from overcoming difficulty is only one of the reasons I stick with some games. There's also the climactic resolution of the narrative or development of gameplay systems. Dear Esther, although a game I didn't really like, doesn't even make any sense unless you play it through to the end. Puzzle games like Braid make it easy for the player to get stuck and give up however the game explores its core mechanic so well that you'll be rewarded with something new and interesting when you get unstuck.

Basically I think of games as a dialog between the developers and the player. As long as they still have something interesting to say, I'm willing to sit and listen. If the only thing a game is saying is "Have fun!" then those are generally the games that exhaust my patience the most. Fun is too ephemeral of a feeling to be the only reason to play games.

I do multiple passes on some games. Some games I just do one pass. It depends on how much I enjoyed it, and how long it is.

The first pass? Mostly I'm playing for fun, but I explore every nook and cranny I can.

Second pass happens when one of two things happen. Either I finish the game and there's a new game + option, or I finish the first ending of the game and there's more endings to pursue. At this point I count the game as "beaten" and then I determine if I want to play more or not.

If the game isn't fun, I look at how much of a time investment it would be to complete it. Most of the time I just drop the game if it wasn't fun, but Resistance: Burning Skies had so little left to get the platinum trophy that I pushed through the last hour or two to get it completed. Heavenly Sword was one I dropped after finishing once, FF2-6, FF8-12, DQ1-8... Those were all fun, but too long and I never went back to play them again after beating them once.

If I'm really enjoying it I'll look at the trophies and just start trying to knock the conditions out while enjoying them. The most recent example of this was Muramasa, where I finished the first two endings, and just kept going and getting more done. Now I've finished 4 of the endings and have all of the swords in the game. I've temporarily shelved it now, but I'm sure I'll be back to it soon. Sometimes I just plow through and finish them before I move on to something else, like Uncharted 3, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Sly Cooper 1 & 2, Sound Shapes, and most Ratchet and Clank games.

Third option? I enjoyed it and finished it, but I'm sick of the gameplay. I'll shelve it and come back to it later. This happened to Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur, Guacamelee, Uncharted 2, Final Fantasy 13 & 13-2. Usually when I come back a year or two later I actually enjoy it more than if I had kept trying to push forward in it.

I enjoyed the long podcast today. It gave me something to listen to/think about while messing around in my garage today.

I'm wondering if there's some correlation between "time spent in game" against "access to other games".

I remember growing up, I had a healthy stream of rentals for the NES, SNES, and Genesis. I got to pop in a new game or two each month, on top of getting a new purchased game two or three times a year, and long-term trades with neighbors and cousins.

Meanwhile, my roommate did not have such access, and thus wound up being one of those kids who played the same game constantly because it was all he had. To talk about putting in 10,000 hours, he's there with the Pokemon series.

While it wasnt 10k hours i was past the 1000+ hour mark in SWG by the time it shut down.
