The lack of challenge in Diablo 3's normal mode is a big problem for me, given that you have to finish it to get to the next level (nightmare?). My fun with D2 was going through the game with all of the characters (on normal mode) trying out the disparate and interesting skills. I can't see doing that on this ultra-easy normal mode. Once I get through normal mode once, will I be able to start up new characters and classes in nightmare mode?

Level 1 characters won't be able to survive at all in Nightmare. Everything in that difficulty will one-shot any character under level 20 or so. I'm about 60% of the way through Act 2 Nightmare with my monk, and the difficulty jump is pretty extreme between normal and Nightmare. Even between acts is pretty huge: Act 2 is kicking my ass right now, especially those freaking wasp elite packs.

After I started Nightmare, I really appreciated the chance that Normal gives to test out the skills and see what everything does. Nightmare doesn't give you any real chance to experiment with your skills after Act 1. You need to be gearing up and setting your skills up correctly to handle the various encounters from the moment you start Nightmare and above.

Of course, you're right. I'd forgotten how mode progression worked in Diablo games. All the more frustrating. I feel this is another concession to the need to have the seamless transition from single to multiplayer. Why oh why can't single player Diablo gamers have their own walled garden with multiple difficulty settings right at the outset like Torchlight 1?

Diablo is the gateway drug to Action RPG Lootfests. Torchlight is what you give them when Diablo no longer does the job.

In regards to PS3 updates:

Yes, you can get automatic update and patches with Playstation Plus, which Cory seemed to laugh off. So it comes down to a simple choice:

Do you want to get quick updates for free, but play for multiplayer? Get an Xbox.
Do you want to get multiplayer for free, but pay for quick updates? Get a PS3.

Ack! Removed.
