They pronounced it wrong. It's actually pronounced "beer." French.

Bièrgnarrd?
En français, grognard is the name for the Halo Grunt enemy. No, they don't wear a monocle and a top hat. But they drink champagne and eat cheese while shouting "Je vais t'avoir!" or something to that effect.

The stories of the Napoleonic elite training and tests are always wonderful. It comes up just about every time I meet Zacny in person.

Did someone say Neverwinter Nights?
I so, long for a new engine which would offer the Neverwinter Nights 1 experience.
Take the massive out of multiplayer role playing game.
In more direct response to one of the letters which stated, part of of what some of us game for, is immersion and the experience of being in a fictional world, Never Winter nights offered that, but in a format you could share with others, and with an engine that put the control of the game in your friend's hands. You take what is an immersive world and you bring it alive in a way that AI can't.
How much better would Red Dead Redemption have been if one of your buddies could have co-op'd with you (OK, they did that); now what if another one of your buddies could jump into that drunken card player and pick a showdown with you, or start a saloon brawl? or have the cut faced whore recruit you to kill her attacker, but with a meaningful personalized story. Maybe even follow you and be a useful hench(wo)man.
I think that this gives us another venue for what is fun about the LARP weekend, or murder mystery the podcasters keep mentioning. This platform however offers you a degree of anonymity which perhaps makes the role playing (like actually portraying a role instead of managing inventory and stats) easier for those of us with public speaking hang ups.
Just interested in hearing about which games could offer this. Is it of interest to any but the select few table top, PnP RPG types?
@Ghostship
I think the concept is great, but I think it's a hard-sell to a publisher/developer. The audience sounds a bit too narrow for a mainstream game. Hence the very limited henchmen in Fable games, & Dungeon Siege 3.
I would be pretty happy if a squad based RPG let you bring in friends. Imagine playing Mass Effect where one player leads (as Shepard) two players join as designated side-kicks for combat and then have some sort of voting/influence system for plot decisions.
It might work really well if a developer could integrate the side-kick/cohort concept type into a strategy game. Two players agree to complete separate, but related, campaigns and the outcome of each battle affects both players in future events.
I think some sports games let franchise/dynasty modes coexist alongside with other players. It's far from what you want specifically, but I think that's the closest thing to a foot in the door of your concept.

It certainly is a niche market.
One thing which concerns me on many gaming podcasts is how often we hear, "but they have to be accountable to shareholders, and I understand that..."
I guess all we can do is throw cash at the things we like and hope others are doing the same.
@Ghostship
The problem is that throwing cash as an individual isn't very significant. The Savage games had some innovative co-op gameplay and I wanted to reward them, but the studio ultimately folded. As a community our best bet is to throw cash collectively at companies that ask for and react to our feedback.
I am working on some game development (but won't release anything until I graduate from college first) and hope to encourage innovation by example. I can't make a great 3d immersive RPG, but the concepts I implement into my own sprite-based games might inspire other developers.

Still in college and worried that normal interactions with society aren't a strong enough representation of your will? Oh man, you are really going to love your 20s.

I'm about half-way through my twenties. I just prefer to influence others through action when possible. I've gotten used to my words falling on deaf ears and it doesn't bother me much.

It just reminded me of Pyroman's sig. Something about the boss battle of your 20s being accepting that you're not important.

On a rather different tack, how did you guys manage to get Steel Battalion rendering at 720p? Is there a secret option a la the PS2's progressive scan button mashing combo?
