I totally hear what you're saying there. Civ 3 with the expansions was such a perfect game to me - but any game I allow myself to get that engrossed in nowadays, needs to have some sort of social component. I think that's why I've consciously drifted to the Guitar Hero Rock Band craze - I can wonk out and get into it, and it's ok b/c it's rock n roll and I like it. And the clearly defined end point of one song is so very manageable.
