Donation Drive 2013 — Final Week

The 2013 Donation Drive ends right at midnight this Friday, which means there’s just a little over 3 days left as I type this. First, a massive thanks to everyone who has donated. Your contributions have already solidly guaranteed another year of growth and content for GWJ, and we honestly are always blown away that people are willing to invest in us and into the community the way you guys do.

I will put one thing out there, hopefully to appeal to those of you who may be on the fence or who haven’t donated yet but plan to. Since we launched the donation drive ten years ago, every year we have raised more than the prior year – which is a big part of how we have been able to keep driving forward and trying new things. Some years by only a couple dozen dollars, other years by thousands. Last year we raised just over $27,000.

Right now, we are not on pace to equal last year’s donation drive total. That would make this the first year since we were founded in 2003 where we raised less than the year before.

So far this year we are just short of having raised $25,000, money which goes to support writers, contributors, the podcast, hosting, site design, site maintenance, special event coverage, let’s plays and the myriad little things it takes to not just keep the lights on but keep growing. We are on the cusp of having enough to fund a second annual GWJ magazine, an exercise I desperately want to have a good solid second shot at. I’m extraordinarily proud of what we put out this year, but there’s so much more we can do, and plan to.

If you haven’t donated and want to support the site’s growth and the community as a whole, now is the moment. We are right at the edge of our stretch goal for a new magazine, and with a strong final push in these last few days we are ready to add a second podcast for your monthly listening pleasure. If you would like to donate, please visit our donation page for full details, and thank you all for your support.

Seriously considering a second donation here. I want those stretch goals!

I'll post an updated tag list tomorrow!

Ditto.

My donations for Extralife have been low this year too. I wonder if financial situations have made it harder to squeeze the money out... (Or if a bunch of people are short on funds because of the new console launches...)

And done.

I assume a fair chunk of people are unable to donate as much as they have previously or even at all, due to loss of employment and/or health issues.
2013 has been a harsh year for many.

I only wish I could afford a second donation, I would love for at least the next goal to be reached.

Things are a bit rougher for me for sure. Still, 25,000 is not bad at all

Glad I checked the site and got my donation in. With the government on shutdown, I haven't been listening to my podcasts (no commute). I'm hoping we hit the 25,000.

No worries. They're less than $700 from the $25K stretch goal, so I'm sure that one will be reached without people making second donations. Surely there are plenty of people that wait until the last minute to donate.

I wish it was not ending this week. I was hoping for the last week in Oct. At least then I would have a normal paycheck. This weeks, thanks to the wonderful people in congress, is going to be the worst I have ever seen it. I am really not trying to complain, that is not my style, but I would like to donate so I am going to try. It is going to be down to the wire as I get paid on the 17th.

I know I don't have to donate, but I have been a member here for over 7 years and for the first 4 I didn't even realize that there was a donation drive and after I did it made me feel like such an ass. I made a personal vow to help out.

I love everything that this community is and does for everyone. I have seen money raised by basically strangers for a member to get back online and get involved again with the community. I saw how money was raised, seemingly overnight, to help a member get back on their feet when they were beat down by life. I have seen many people make connections, whether in careers or relationships. I have seen the HUGE out pouring of moral support for people facing difficult life choices, career choices, legal, and even facing the lose of a loved one. This sight never ceases to amaze me and I want to say that I helped in my small way with some of that.

I didn't mean to get sappy, I just wanted to get some of my thoughts down that I have been kicking around for sometime now and always resurface during the donation drive in seeing how much everyone gives.

I think we've also had a lot of 'smaller' fund raisers recently for some of our members (or their memory) within the community.

Here's to hoping we can make it to $25,000, at least. I would love to read another issue of the magazine. I had to wait until I had the money to manage it myself, and now...I don't have enough to double fund.

Guys, let me stress: we are in no position where anyone should stretch themselves thin (or feel guilty for not doing so)! I have gotten several notes in donations talking about how people feel bad for not being able to donate more. I am genuinely touched by the sentiment, but don't for a second feel like anyone should have an iota of stress in their lives on our account.

Take care of yourself and your family first. GWJ will be here.

I've been really "good" at forgetting to buy myself lunch lately, so there's some cash on hand. However, the power to tell GWJ writers what to do ... I'm not sure I see the appeal.

We passed the $25k mark! Hurrah!

I have a confession, however: I wish the next two goals were switched. I have far more interest in a radio play than another podcast.

Just donate $5000. Easy peasy!

(I kinda really want that other podcast.)

I second this idea... (I want both.)

I think my emails may be going into Elysium's spam box. I donated on the 25th (first week I think) and haven't been on a list or icon updated. Elysium, I'll shoot you a PM with my info.

Glad to! If you'll just PM me your checking account number and routing number, I'll take care of your second donation for you.

And donated. Thanks again for another great year. Managed to get in before the deadline ran out

Donated. Thanks for the reminder. I would be mad at myself if I forgot to donate.

For the record, we went from being consistently about 5-10% behind last year's donation drive effort, to beating last year's total by more than $1000.

A sincere thanks for your awesome support!
