Want to Help Design The Next GamersWithJobs.com?

As you know, Gamers With Jobs is primarily run by people who have proper day jobs and a lot on their plate. Myself included. So when we're working on something new and awesome it tends to be a bit of a slow burn as we chip away at it in our spare time. There comes a point in the project, however, where the time for picking is over and we need to hunker down and get the job done.

This is where you come in. Drupal expert and all around awesome guy Jeff Beeman (doogiemac) has been working with a number of talented people over the past year getting the next iteration of the website lined up with the latest version of Drupal. Most of the heavy lifting on the back-end is complete and we've even got a good base for the site's new interface. What we need now is a talented web designer to really make this thing pop.

We're very keen to have someone who knows Gamers With Jobs and what we're all about to come on board and help us out. This will be a paid position of sorts, although it likely won't be as much as you're used to. As usual, we're at the whims of the donation drive to dictate our budget, but I can guarantee the undying gratitude of the community at large at the very least!

So what are we looking for? If you're a web designer and you kick ass, meet me after the break.

Here is the kind of help we're looking for:

- Interface and art design. Certain elements like our logo are set in stone (mostly) but things like color palette, typeface, layout and flow are all very much up for grabs. The goal is to keep things simple, elegant and focused on delivering good content and a strong forum experience. The good news is you don't have to design around ad space!

- Make sure you know it's Gamers With Jobs the moment you load the page. So many sites are basically WordPress templates these days. We're not looking to pull a Killzone and change FPS controls just for the sake of being different, but the site should be tailored to GWJ's unique content and brand. I can't believe I just wrote that.

- Examples of your past work would be great.

- You don't need Drupal experience. Jeff can handle getting a design implemented, but if you do have some Drupal chops (or want to earn some) that's great too.

So there you have it! Interested? Drop us a line using the site's contact form above and let us know! We have a rough schedule laid out for how long the work is going to take, but we can tailor that to your schedule too.

Wow. Did you ever think you'd be this big that you'd write:

"but the site should be tailored to GWJ's unique content and brand. I can't believe I just wrote that."

It's amazing what a thing can become.

Undying? Well, I'll promise them my firstborn... But no more!
I'm feeling a mixture excitement and trepidation at the prospective changes - as usual!

I'm excited! I can't wait to see what folks come up with.

I'll bake cookies in thanks!!! Also, a donation drive contribution, that's pretty much the extent of my "skills". Yeah, like Duoae, both nervous and excited too. Can't wait to see what the future holds!

Am I hopelessly stuck in my ways because I really don't want change? I like the clean, simple design and colour scheme as it is.

It seems like the right time to make a request.

You've said the logo will not be changing, but could we have multiple versions of our mascot to better represent the diversity of the community?

I'm thinking, have a pool of different "Stans" (and Stannettes? Staninas?) drawn in the exact same style in the logo at random when you open the site. I have no idea how technically possible or difficult this would be. If I recall correctly, it was Sean Sand's wife (blanking on your name, sorry!) who drew the original, so could she be commisioned to do a few more?

It's a small thing, but it would make a huge difference to me.

Oooh, this sounds like a lot of fun!

On second thought, lemme get back to you on this.

You'll need to add an EU-mandated cookie disclaimer

I was so afraid this was you kicking us all off your lawn and telling us to make our own fort. What a relief!

Congratulations. The test is now over.

All Gamers With Jobs technologies remain safely operational up to 4000 degrees Kelvin.

Rest assured that there is absolutely no chance of a dangerous equipment malfunction prior to your victory candescence.

Thank you for participating in this Gamers With Jobs computer-aided enrichment activity.

Goodbye.

The only thing I can make pop is my wallet with a donation to the cause. Has the drive started yet?

Certain elements like our logo are set in stone (mostly).

I really like how firm this wasn't. Very Canadian of you.

This is great! I wish I had a shred of art talent.

Does anyone have the old theme songs anywheres. I have had a hankering to listen to em

I am not a web designer, I'm a particle physicist. But I've been doing some pretty cool web design lately:

http://minerva05.fnal.gov/Arachne/live

That's a web application showing live, interactive event data from the MINERvA neutrino detector at Fermilab. (Ok, the data is actually 2 years old, but we're expecting new beam any day now.)

Ok, I'm not really looking for a job, just showing off...

Cookies are a specific type of biscuit (like bourbon creams) in the EU. In America it's a generic replacement for the very suitable term "biscuit". I also discovered, here on gwj a while back that muffins in America are more like scones or dumplings - depending from where the person comes from. Dumplings having their own trans-atlantic issues as well!

I'm seriously beginning to think that when people emigrated to the colonies that there was a mandated scrambling of dictionaries in order to promote harmony and cooperation between rival settlements from different countries...

I thought I was getting a cookie (probably chocolate chip) but now i'm nit sure what's on offer!

Oh. I didn't realise that. Try contacting Ian on twitter or something? At the very least he might want to take down the broken links, if not find a new home for the content entirely.

Oh wow, you sure gave that a lot of thought!!!! O_O
I was just thinking regular chocolate chip cookies. But of course, I can make scones if that's what's required. I can take more outlandish requests as long as I can handle them.
However, freshness can't be guaranteed, as well, you know, I'm shipping them from my little island. ^_^

Awesome, though it should be round...like a donut.

I can't believe I'm excited about a website revamp that's not one of mine (and these days even those tend to be the result of a WordPress theme no longer working and requiring a change). I'm ready to be blown away!

If the redesign still has a light (white) theme, all I ask for is the option of a dark theme so I don't have to completely rewrite my custom Stylish CSS for GWJ.

This is not the thread for features requests. That'll be a bit later. It's fine to have ideas, we're just not going to be explicitly noting things down right now.

Heh, yeah. This is Gawker all over again. Except I never go to Gawker sites.

I just like that GWJ doesn't have all sorts of slideshows and nonsense that doesn't really serve any purpose except to look flashy. But no doubt I'll enjoy whatever we end up with.

Nooooooo, now I'll have to remake the GWJ Forza car. And buy an Xbone and Fiveza.

I wish I was more creative. I can't wait for the new design!

Too bad I'm just a systems and hardware guy.

We really don't want me designing web interfaces. It'd be like Wheatley took over GWJ.

This is a community vote, right? I mean my vote is behind this guy!
