Donation Drive 2012 — Final Update
A few final thoughts on the now past tense 2012 Donation Drive. Additionally, I have an updated list of donors after the bump, so if you just want to go check and make sure your name is on there, you should dash ahead.
First, a thank you. No, seriously, thank you! Obviously, thank you for your financial support, which allows us to continue this experiment now coming on ten years old, but more importantly for the participation, the ownership you guys take in the community, the regular time you take out of your lives to hear our shows, read our articles, comment on topics of the day and keep GWJ a safe haven. We said it at the beginning and we’ll say it again, this site isn’t about us. It’s about you.
The other thing I want to talk about though, is what happens next. So, apparently we’ve got some work to do over the next few months and year, and we have a lot of promises that we are excited to keep. Now we get to start thinking about how we will bring our donors on the podcast. We get to think about if we’re making a magazine whose words would it be very cool to see in that? We get to figure out this whole video thing. We get to get some custom icons made, get Infinite Lives in people’s hands and so on.
To be honest, these are all things we’re really excited to do. We know you’re excited to see the results of your support. So, how’s that going to happen?
It’s been awhile since I have been glad that I have a job in which I have to be at least a competent Excel jockey. This weekend, as I dive into the numbers to sort and dice, chop and puree, organize and rearrange the numbers, I will be glad I have some functional knowledge of words like vlookup and pivot tables. Finally, middle management skills will be useful, if only briefly.
But, before I break into some more of the delivery specifics, here’s how the drive shook out. While our donation drive page shows 697 backers, the final tally including all sources shows us just over 700, which is one among many of the new records, roughly 100 more than we’ve had in previous drives. As for the total donation amount, well that’s in a whole other galaxy than we’re used to. The average donation was a staggering $37, though that people in tougher times were able and willing to send even a handful of dollars is every bit as meaningful. The most common donation was $25, with about ⅓ of all donors contributing at that level.
The practical upshot of that is that we have a lot of Bombsfall’s artwork to be handing out, which we will probably do by providing a link to those donors who contributed at $25+ where they can download the work at their discretion. This is something we hope to get set up and delivered in the short term, as will be the extra podcast content that will be distributed to those who donated $50+ and the Infinite Lives collection for those at the $100+ levels.
Also in the short term, those who donated $200 for the custom forum icon will likely be hearing from me in the next week or two to begin that process. I will be putting those people in contact with Elysia, who does all of our icons and who also makes a mean enchilada, though Mexican delicacies are not in the two-benjamins tier.
Some of the other tier levels will require some longer term planning. Particularly the game nights, the podcast sponsorships and the podcast guest spot, though we will want to be as accommodating as possible to everyone’s most desired time-frames. Shawn or I will be reaching out to those individuals in the next week or two to do some initial planning, though some of the appearances and events may be out weeks or months depending on availability and requested dates.
Then there is always Julian and the two articles our community members have demanded of him, not the least of which being a professional piece on the game that’s swept the nation, The Secret of the Magic Crystal. An article, which is already being deeply and richly researched, and which I must admit that I can not wait to read for myself.
Beyond that, the stretch goals. You’ve already seen our freshman efforts at providing video content, and we have some ideas around how we want to approach that. We’ve got some technology solutions in place, though refining and improving the process, making it something that we can do both effectively and efficiently, is a hurdle we still have to clear. While these videos aren’t likely to be a weekly feature for us just yet, we do have quite a few of them planned.
The special edition magazine is going to be its own beast entirely. We want to do this right, get the layout right, pay for some really good content, have a distinctive GWJ style to it, provide something that you could imagine gracing a newsstand or arriving in the mail. We want you to think after you were done reading, “man, this is what made magazines great; I wish this was there all the time.” We have a lot of people on staff and in within our circle that have extensive magazine experience, so we’re going to take our time with this one and really create something worth the phenomenal outpouring of support you guys provided.
Also, though it never made the official list, I plan to stay true to my word to create 2 new Welcome Perverts articles, the first of which I’m working on and plan to post on October 26th. I apologize in advance.
To be honest, that’s only part of what we have planned for the year. I know Shawn and I are already thinking hard, and even actively planning, for at least two big other initiatives this year that we didn’t include as a stretch goal or otherwise. Both of these secret projects are, I think, pretty awesome, and I’m looking forward to figuring out a way to make them work so we can present them to you. More on that in the weeks and months to come.
Last, but far from least, we’ve finally processed what we think are all the icons for donors who requested credit to their account. Inevitably, I have missed somebody, or more likely a number of people. I apologize, this is still a manual effort and you guys inundated my inbox with awesome shows of support and a plethora of comments. Though I didn’t get a chance to respond to everyone, I read every single word. It means a lot to me to read how GWJ connects with peoples lives.
