July 2 – July 6

It's been a long time since an even moderately high-profile MMO released on the PC and I didn't buy it for at least a month-long spin. That's not an exaggeration, either, or hyperbole. I genuinely can't remember the last halfway-big MMO, staggering out to try and collect from the ever-dwindling pool of monthly subscriptions, that I didn't buy. I guess Tera, but that was on moral grounds, and had it not been for its troubling art-style, I'd have almost certainly plugged into that one for the inventive combat. Beyond that there's been a roll-call of online games on and off my hard drive, including: DC Universe, SWTOR, Rift, Star Trek Online, Warhammer Online, LOTRO, Age of Conan, and probably a half-dozen others I'm forgetting. Pick a high-profile PC MMO released in the last 5 years, and I nearly guarantee I spent money on it.

So the fact that I'm not picking The Secret World for Game of the Week, and moreover not intending to pick it up and play it at all, is at least for me a notable point. Though, to be honest, I'm not sure what that point actually is.

Regardless, if local bon vivant Cory Banks is to be believed, the best game out this week is actually Endless Space. A 4x game of galactic domination with an emphasis of large scale empire management, early buzz from the beta has been almost universally positive. In the absence of a new Galacitc Civilizations to play — has it really be almost 8 years since GalCiv2 released? — and as always looking for a game that hits me the way that Master of Orion 2 did back in the day, a trip into Endless Space sounds like just the thing for a long July 4th weekend.

I'm not buying it because I suck at rhythm games, but I'm sure I'm not going to be able to escape Theatrhythm this week.

All about Theatrhythym Final Fantasy this week.

I'm with Certis in that The Secret World looks awesome, but it's too bad that it's an MMO.

Finally a new game on Steam that I am excited for (Endless Space). I bought the Admiral version. Didn't quite see the need to pay an extra $10 or so for the extra skins.

MMO fatigue is the main reason I will likely not be joining the Secret World brigade. If one more quest giver asks me to kill 10 of x or gather 10 of y, I will burn down the building.

Agreed. SWTOR fell apart for me because it was filled with boring, generic mechanics designed to keep me playing, rather than keeping me entertained. I last played Everquest, and before that, UO; only the latter was different.

I think MMOs are a strange thing, somewhat less than a "game", somewhat more than a distraction.

a long July 4th weekend.

Heck of a long weekend. Most folks I know only get Wednesday off.

In DDO there is a quest giver who starts off asking you to bring him 10 Rat Tails, but then he laughs at you and tells you what he really would like for you to tackle. I found it pretty funny. Of course, DDO has always been an odd MMO - it isn't nearly as much of a cool-down tracker as it is an action game that happens to have lots of people connected at once.

Despite the mute protagonist, and the clash of subscription and real-world transactions, TSW is really good. Color me surprised.

I'm up for giving The Secret World a whirl for the novelty of the setting, if nothing else.

Note to world : Need more contemporary horror RPG's.

Wow a space GotW. Well there is a catch-all for Endless Space if anyone decides to jump in. All the talk about the beta in there has been very positive.

This may just be me, so if you love TSW no need to get upset, but I tried the beta and to be honest I couldn't get past the modern guns + traditional MMO mechanics approach of the combat. What I mean is that I'm wielding a shotgun or assault rifle, stuff starts coming in the room, and I start firing. I don't kill it, my ability is on cooldown, so the enemy makes his way to me. It's standing there 2 feet away at the end of my gun, just waiting for me to shoot at it again, and I'm just standing there waiting for it to swipe me with it's claws again. It just feels really off-putting to me (I had the same problem with previous MMOs with guns). I think I would have preferred it with MMO-FPS style mechanics.

Gonna check out Endless Space, haven't played a space 4X game in a while.

Not looking forward to this week. I am one of the few in the office that will not be on vacation.

I've been waiting for Theatrhythm ever since I played it at PAX. Well, really, ever since they announced and I was like, "yeah, this is obviously made for the demographic of ME."

Spelunkey just got a glowing review over in Polygon.

Have to say tried Secret World with no foreknowledge and I love it. Most interesting MMO to come along in a very long time. Between the modern setting, slower pace, and free form character development it is just different enough to get me excited. It is an MMO so if you are burned out on the genre don't expect it to change your mind.

Wait, what did you just call me?

…and had it not been for it's troubling art-style…

Well, I guess we know what to flog 'smythe for this week.

I too am quite intrigued by Theatrhythm. Might wait for more reviews to come in, though.

Nuts. According to the system requirements The Secret World needs 3gig ram minimum on windows 7. Anyone in the beta confirm if it will run on 2 or not?

Otherwise I guess it's as good an excuse as any to finally get around to buying some more ram.

RAM is insane cheap right now. I'm tempted to buy some for my next system upgrade and just sit on it for a year. Although you sometimes get bad sticks, so I haven't done that. But man I just hope it is still cheap when I need it.

Could not agree more. Also, curious as to the GWJ CC crew's thoughts on Spelunky, once it comes out. I like the concept, but the execution as far as the mechanics and controls went in the original version left me a little cold.

I highly doubt it will work with just 2Gb. I was running 3Gb during the first two open beta weekends and was crashing about once an hour with an "out of memory" error (Plus it was slow as hezmana loading areas) and it wouldn't run at all if I had anything else running (like fraps or Ventrillo)

I used it as an excuse to upgrade to 8Gb. Runs smooth as silk with no problems now.

Ok, sounds like a good excuse to do the same then. Ta.

It's interesting to see the Master of Orion II reference. When Endless Space was covered in the podcast, the Grumpy Old Man inside me kept asking "...but is Endless Space better than MOO2?". Would anyone who's played both like to offer a perspective?

As for The Secret World, it will be free-to-play within 18 months. I intend to play it then.

I ask that about every space game. In fact, I posed a similar question in the space sim thread, about Endless Space and Distant Worlds.
