October 3 - October 7

Frankly, I'm a little surprised Certis hasn't somehow found a way to have me otherwise indisposed today so that he could post The Week Ahead, because if he had, Dark Souls would have been your game of the week. But he didn't, and it's not. Rage is, duh.

However, I will concede that the initial feedback on Dark Souls is effusive and glowing. You could probably do far worse this week or even this month than to make playing Dark Souls a priority. I admit that the difficulty curve is beyond all else what keeps me from putting in my time with Dark Souls, and so I will invest my free time this week into the familiar haven of an id shooter.

We have now entered the gauntlet, and there will be no reprieve until all the major publishers have unloaded their fabulous bounties. We also enter the time of year when quality is balanced closely against a holiday timeframe, so I must admit that I also have a somewhat more skeptical eye turned to those borderline games like Disciples III that during other parts of the year I might just take a chance on.

Also this week on the downloadable front, Chrono Trigger hits PSN, and since even I like that game, I can only assume it is a triumph of the form.

Hmmm. The original Disciples III is in the Onlive Playpack. Anyone know if it's worth checking out? Looked a bit like Heroes of Might and Magic from what I spectated...

Avoid at all costs.

Kids Learn Math: A+ Edition is supposed to be a huge improvement over Kids Learn Math: C- Edition. I might have to check that out.

Simply Minesweeper is also on my list, although the previews I have seen suggest it's simply Minesweeper with a new coat of paint.

How are the initial reviews for Rage looking? This was one of my fringe "eh, if I have time/money" games.

It's one I definitely want, but I know me and id games, which means that I'll wait until it's down to $25 or less, unfortunately.

Dark Souls for me... too bad I had to cancel my pre-order and will likely wait till xmas... much sadness...

Looks like reviews are still on embargo, but I'm with Farscry here, this isn't a day 1 for me at all. There's just something about id games ...

I forgot all about RAGE until a commercial after the Phillies game last night came on. Also: I hate baseball.

Dark Souls is getting my sweet, sweet lovin'.

RAGE seems to have a big marketing push behind it. I'm seeing ads plastered across Metro buses all over DC, and I never see games advertised that way.

Everytime a commercial for RAGE came on during football, I thought it was an early trailer for Borderlands 2. After DOOM 3, I am happy to wait a while before considering RAGE.

Rage is not something to be rushed into.

BloodRayne Betrayal is worth checking out. I think NBA Jam On Fire Edition is coming this week also.

I'm picking up Orcs Must Die, and am I completely bonkers for looking seriously at Space Channel 5: Part 2? I loved the old one on my Dreamcast.

What he said.

The game publisher are doing everything they can to separate me from my money this year.

Rage, preordered, will pick it up friday. It's been ages since I picked up an id game, but this one looks good so far.
Dark Souls, preordered and paid for
Eufloria, Already have the PSN points for it.
Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire, definitely picking them up.
Just last week, I bought Rochard, Ico/SOTC and Solatorobo. All excellent games.

Reviews won't be out until 9PM PST. I don't why, but this is my most anticipated game this fall besides Batman. (I've never played an id game) I watched the first two hours on YouTube and it looks great. It seems like a structured far cry 2, with a borderlands skin, and a bioshock level of world detail and atmosphere.

I'll be picking up both Rage and Dark Souls tomorrow. The hardest part will be deciding which to play first...... I'm guessing Rage because otherwise I won't play it for a while. I know Dark Souls is going to suck me in and not let go for a long time.

I'm actually excited about minesweeper for DS. The only platform more perfect for that game is an alt-tabbed spreadsheet.

That was a chuckle well needed. Thank you.

Until GWJ gives us a Rage review, I'll stick with my newly purchased Final Fantasy Tactics. (Forgotten PSN wallet balance for the victory!)

RAGE: the derivative videogame smoothie.

Rage for sure. I really, really want to try Dark Souls, but the last game kicked my ass (I think I put in about 20 or so hours and only completed a few levels.. bummer). If I had a lot more free time, and less games to play, I'd give it a go.

Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove 3D? I bought your console, please don't punish me for it Nintendo.

It should probably be noted that this is the PS1 version of Chrono Trigger, so it may well have the loading time issue of that particular console. Alas. Would be giddy as a gazelle not being eaten if this is not true.

Rage looks great but I think I've actually completely burnt the id FPS receptors out of my brain over the years.

Ars on Rage: Not good, bad.

My only complaint with Kuchera's little overview is a pop-up saying "You should talk to so-and-so" breaks immersion. That just feels standard. I can see how it COULD be done in a more immersive way, but not necessarily a way that communicates information better.

Otherwise, nine hours with the game and not impressed? Well, I usually agree with him on games, so RAGE is getting a pass from me (not that I had much interest anyway outside of it being the new id engine).

Rage wasn't even on my radar, honestly I hadn't even heard of it.

Dark Souls catch-all is here, for those so inclined.

I still haven't really played Chrono Trigger. If I find the time, I need to decide between the PSN and iOS versions.

It's Doom 3 all over again. Gotcha.

I hope you'll post your opinions about Solatorobo somewhere (maybe the JRPG thread?)... I'd like to hear some real-world impressions.

It would seem unlikely since it is hitting a HDD instead of disc. (Although I remember Chrono Trigger as being playable on the PS1, but that was some time ago.) Given the DS port I wouldn't think there was money left in this old horse, but I guess PS1 ports are pretty easy since they already have the emulation.
